Here is my view:

A much better performance than against Greenwich Borough, when I
last saw the lads play - but we couldn't lay a glove on Casuals,
who were very good.

Thanks for the report, Phil. Seems like the Casuals have put
together a very useful side that could challenge for honours
this season. I too have bitter memories of the 5-1 reverse in
2009-10 season. Was that the one that included a wind assisted
effort that made our keeper look like David Seaman's worse
nightmare?

Hi John.
Yes, that was the game. It was certainly our goalie's worst
nightmare. It was Darren Ibrahim - not to be confused with
Derren Ibrahim who currently plays for Dartford and Gibraltar.
There was one game when Darren let in a comical own goal, early
on. First of all, he caught the ball when it dollied up in the
air - then he dropped it, but made a swift recovery. Then, as
the defence moved upfield, he went to throw the ball out to the
left-winger, but stuck the left-back in the back of the head.
The ball rebounded and headed goalwards. So Darren chased the
ball as hard as he could, thinking it was going to go into the
net - then, just when he had almost caught up with the ball, the
ball hit the post and then went in off his shins. Do you
remember it ? I thought it was the 5-1 Corinthian Casuals
match, but I've checked my match report and it isn't.
The sad thing, at the time, is that none of us at the game were
surprised at the goal, as he was such a terrible 'keeper ! I'm
pleased to say that our current team now looks a lot stronger
than the team we had in those days.

I've found it - it was actually away to Leatherhead. I didn't
recall the incident exactly right. This is what happened,
according to my report:
"Unfortunately, after a fairly uneventful opening six minutes,
which mostly featured Leatherhead possession, that was then all
thrown away by a distinctly unfunny comedy routine from Darren
Ibrahim. After first fumbling, and then juggling, a routine
take, Darren advanced towards the edge of his penalty area, and
attempted to throw the ball out to his left-back. The ball hit
the head of a near-by Ashford defender, and ricocheted to big
Leon Simpson, who was just a couple of yards outside the penalty
area. With the Ashford ‘keeper not at home, Simpson lobbed the
ball towards the unguarded net. As Darren desperately chased
back, the ball hit the post, rebounded off his shin and then
popped into the net. Simpson shamelessly claimed the goal – and,
at 6ft 10in, who’s going to argue with him ? – but this was
undoubtedly an Ibrahim own goal."
Happy days !
