       ASHFORD UNITED 3 GUERNSEY 0
       Bostik League South Division.
       Saturday 23rd September 2017.
       by John Pease.
This was billed as Ashford's first “six pointer” of the season
and, after a somewhat mis-firing first half, they ran out
       comfortable winners.
Nothing very much happened for the first ten minutes with both
sides sizing up the other. Indeed, this carried on until the
16th minute when the visitors managed their first shot on
target. From then on a game emerged with Ashford responding
in the 19th minute when Joe Bingham cut in from the right, beat
a defender and shot narrowly wide. The first real danger to
the home side occurred in the 23rd minute when an
uncharacteristic mis-kick by Pat Kingwell let in David Rihoy but
he shot over the bar. At this stage Guernsey looked the more
likely to score as they seemed able to put together more
meaningful attacks. Twice their number 11, Matthew Loaring,
broke free but hit his first shot straight at Big George then
saw his second superbly saved. With half an hour gone Charlie
Sharp broke down the left wing and hit a good centre which
Tyrell R-B could only head over the bar. Guernsey's back four
looked well drilled and solid whilst Ashford played some nice
football in mid field but lacked the finishing touches. Then
it was the turn of Mr. Loaring to break clear of the Ashford
defence again. First, in the 34th minute, he forced a great
save from Big George. A feat repeated some four minutes later
following a defensive howler. With half time approaching
visiting keeper Callum Stanton made his first serious save from
Isaac Boateng. As the half ended Guernsey looked comfortable
but Ashford were still in the game thanks to Big George.
The second half was a totally different story. Within the
space of a couple of minutes the Guernsey defence went AWOL and
Ashford scored two goals. In the 47th minute a through ball
found an un-marked Tyrell R-B and he made no mistake. Just
over a minute later Mat Day who, to be honest, had done little
of note, broke clear and smashed the ball past Stanton.
Still, how many times have we seen a “quiet” player grab an
important goal? Now there was only one team in it as the
visitors appeared to have lost their shape and footballing
discipline. Isaac Boateng tried his luck from 20 yards but was
only just off target. With 55 minutes gone manager Jason
Whitmore replaced a tiring Mickey Phillips with a fresh Dave
Botterill. Two minutes later Ashford so very nearly added a
third only to see their final effort hacked off the line. With
one hour gone George Humber came on for Mat Day. Having
cleared their brains of the shell shock from going two down,
Guernsey started to put together a few efforts but found Big
George in top form and in no mood to surrender a clean sheet.
To make matters worse for them Ashford added a third goal in the
80th minute. The impressive George Humber latched onto a good
pass from Boateng, side stepped a defender and rifled the ball
low into the net. (this won £20 for Barbara and me as we had the
relevant Golden Goal ticket). There was still time for Big
George to make another fine save and break Guernsey hearts.
This result gave a much needed boost to the management, players
and supporters of Ashford United. Let's hope it is the start
       of something good.
The Ashford team was as follows:- George Kamurasi, Luke
Eldridge, Charlie Sharp, John Difford, Joe Bingham, Pat Kingwell
(capt), Mickey Phillips (David Botterill – 55 mins), Ben
Davisson, Isaac Boateng (Conner Westney – 85 mins), Matthew Day
       (George Humber – 60 mins),
       Tyrell Richardson-Brown.
Subs not used = Adam Phillips and Brandon Williams.
       Attendance – not given
M.O.M.? Had to be George Kamurasi. Without him Ashford could
easily have been two down at the break.
P.S. The usual PA guy was not present and there appeared to be
no PA announcements. To make matters worse those watching from
the upstairs bar had to suffer non stop music for the duration.

Thanks for the report, John. It's good that the lads seem to be
getting better and better with each game. This certainly was a
six-pointer ! There are plenty of teams in this league who will
be simply too strong for us, at this stage in the squad's
development, so it's important to get the three points against
       the Guernseys and the Ramsgates.
I hope to see you and Barbara before long. I was looking forward
to attending my first game of the season this coming Saturday,
but Phoenix's FA Cup run has robbed me of that - so I'm
targeting Carshalton, on the 21st of October.......

       Hi Phil,
Hope you and Eve are keeping well. Although the lads ran out
easy winners on Saturday there is still a need for a big proven
goal scorer. I would also like to see a bit more discipline at
the back as we lost our shape a few times in the first half.
Against a better side this could have been fatal. I'm glad
you have joined this forum and hope you will post match reports
for any away games you attend.
