       ASHFORD UNITED 0 MOLESEY 1
       Bostik League South Division.
       Saturday 9th September 2017
       by John Pease.
Ashford clocked up another loss in their tough baptism into the
Bostik League but this was a game they could and really should
have won. Unlike their last game, Ashford fielded a more
mature looking side with Jonathon Difford, Pat Kingwell, Michael
Phillips, Ben Davisson and Tyrell Richardson—Brown in the
starting eleven. This also included new boys Morgan Seaman at
number 2, Joseph Bingham at 4, and Max Watters at 9 although
clearly playing in a wide right position. A thin looking bench
also included new boy Caleb Afoke.
It didn't take long to realise that Molesey were not as strong
as the Bostik sides faced so far this season. Ashford started
well and pressed hard for the first eight minutes with Tyrell
R-B hooking over a good chance following a short corner.
Visiting captain Craig Lewington did head one wide but it was
Ashford who looked the more dangerous with Max Watters being
foiled by Molesey keeper Liam Allen. Allen looked very young
but played like an established member of the side and had an
excellent game. With 19 minutes gone home number 7, Micky
Phillips, picked up a yellow card for a blatant body check but
visiting number 7, Josh Andrew, was fouling for fun without
punishment. Indeed, he and Lewington, a couple of old stagers,
were bending the ref's ear at every opportunity making him look
a bit weak. With 27 minutes gone Ashford should have scored.
Tyrell R-B broke down the left flank and picked out an un-marked
Mat Day, about five yards out. but he scuffed his shot and Allen
cleared with his legs. Five minutes later another home chance
went begging. In the 39th minute Lewington was booked
following a dreadful tackle and so was Ashford's Difford but I
suspect this latter card was for dissent. Molesey finished the
half stronger bringing a good save from Aaron Lee Wharton and
then scraping the Ashford cross bar. So, no score at the break
but Ashford should have had at least two goals to show for their
       efforts.
The second period started much like the first with Ben Davisson
hitting a shot straight to Allen and with the home side creating
more and more pressure without an end product. This prompted
me to ask if Ashford would be punished for their wastefulness.
(never ask a question when you already know the answer). Some
of the older Molesey players were struggling but their back line
remained in good shape and Ashford lacked the wit to undo it.
Manager Jason Whitmore was forced to make his first
substitution in the 62nd minute replacing the injured Brandon
Williams with Caleb Afoke. Nine minutes later Ashford muffed
yet another great chance and five minutes later paid the price.
With 76 minutes gone, Molesey substitute Ronnie Sobowale
collected the ball on the left, cut in to the angle of the
penalty area and fired a superb shot into the far corner of the
net giving young Aaron no chance. Ashford sent on Conner
Westney for Mat Day and Dave Botterill for a tired Micky
Phillips. This prompted attack after attack with Morgan Seaman
starting many but the equaliser simply would not come. As the
game entered time added on, the old sweats of Molesey showed
their worth by cleverly running down the clock. So, another
defeat to swallow by the loyal Ashford fans but at least there
were clear signs of the club moving in the right direction. The
new boys fitted in well and if they can un-earth a big brutal
striker Ashford will start to pick up points.
The Ashford team was as follows:- Aaron Lee Wharton, Morgan
Seaman, Brandon Williams (Caleb Afoke – 62 mins), Joseph
Bingham, Jonathon Difford, Pat Kingwell – Capt, Michael Phillips
(Dave Botterill – 81 mins), Ben Davisson, Max Watters, Mat Day
       (Conner Westney – 78 mins), Tyrell Richardson-Brown.
       All subs were used.
       Attendance – not given
M.O.M.? = My vote went to Morgan Seaman. He defended well in
the first half and started many attacks in the second with well
timed runs. He looks like a very good signing.
