ASHFORD UNITED 3 SHOREHAM 0
Bostik League South Division
Saturday 30th December 2017
by John Pease.
After the fine win on Tuesday the Ashford faithful were fully
expecting another against bottom club Shoreham. Well, they got
their wish but had to wait until the second half for the lads in
green to come good.
The Ashford starting line up only saw one change from the game
against Sittingbourne that being Rohdell Gordon replacing Joe
Bingham at number eight. For the benefit of our good friend at
Milton Keynes I have to report that, on a far from freezing
afternoon, Tom Cooney and Andrew Dalhouse were guilty of wearing
gloves.
The match started with Ashford very nearly opening their account
in the 3rd minute when, following a bit of an error by visiting
goalie James Broadbent, Shomari Barnwell tried to find an
un-guarded net from some 30 yards only to see his effort cleared
off the line. However, his time was to come later. Shoreham
hit back when the excellent Shawn Lyle won a loose ball and only
just fired over the bar. At once, Andrew Dalhouse beat two
defenders and laid the ball off to Barnwell who saw his shot
deflected for a corner. Then a good move saw the ball worked
from Max Watters to Barnwell and then to Dalhouse but his shot
was smothered by a defender. And so it continued with Ashford
on the front foot and with Barnwell again going close. In the
22nd minute the game was halted when Shoreham's Jack Whitmore
picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Marlon Pinder.
This delay, for some reason, upset the rhythm of the home side
who spent the next quarter of an hour playing like complete
wallys and losing the ball for fun. Sanity returned when
Dalhouse hit a shot straight to Broadbent and then saw team mate
Gordon force the keeper to make a decent save. From the
resulting corner an Ashford header hit the bar and was scrambled
clear. On the stroke of half time Gordon came the closest to
opening Ashford's account.
With no goals to report one hoped that a few bums were kicked
in the Ashford dressing room during the interval but as the
second period got underway Shoreham caused alarm as Lyle broke
clear only to fire his shot straight at home keeper Michael
McEntegart. Andrew Dalhouse was working like mad to get things
going and nearly succeeded in the 49th minute from 18 yards.
However, the home faithful didn't have to wait long for the
anticipated opener. Good work down the left flank by Barnwell
and Gordon saw a superb cross to the unmarked Dalhouse and his
header whistled past Broadbent and into the net. The scorer
very nearly added another within sixty seconds but his effort
brought forth a decent save from Broadbent. Ashford were now
in command and with an hour gone manager Jason Whitmore sent on
Brandon Williams for George McLennan. Dalhouse was now hunting
a second goal and went very close in the 66th minute by forcing
another good save from Broadbent. Thankfully, the second goal
did arrive two minutes later when Barnwell gathered the ball on
the edge of the Shoreham box and fired a snorter well wide of
Broadbent. It was now one way traffic allowing Jason the
luxury of using two more substitutes. A third goal arrived in
the 84th minute when, following a free kick, Barnwell pounced on
a loose ball and fired it wide of Broadbent. Matt Day was
unlucky not to get on the score sheet with two efforts late in
the match which brought out the best of keeper Broadbent.
With the last kick of the game Barnwell was unlucky not to nail
his hat trick but that man Broadbent rescued his side yet again.
So, for the first time this season, Ashford recorded back to
back wins and gave genuine hope for a brighter second half of
the season.
The Ashford team was as follows:- Michael McEntegart, Cheick
Toure, Tommy Cooney, Kwabena Osei, Jon Difford, Ryan Richefond,
Max Watters, Rohdell Gordon (Ira Jackson – 76 mins.), Andrew
Dalhouse (Matt Day – 80 mins.), Shomari Barnwell, George
McLennan (Brandon Williams – 60 mins.).
Subs not used = James Fitchett and Joe Bingham.
Attendance = 329
M.O.M. = I was happy to go along with the “official” pick of
Shomari Barnwell who was unlucky not to get a hat trick. I was
leaning towards Andrew Dalhouse but then I remembered he was
wearing gloves!.

Many (belated) thanks for the report, John - and Happy New Year
to you !
With another good point today, things certainly seem to have
turned around. There is also a lot more stability with the team
selection, now, so there is every reason for us all to feel
optimistic going into 2018.
Thank you for the gloves update - I will continue to monitor the
situation !
