A New Day... [OPEN SCENE: At the Cafe] (Closed)

Arriving at the Café yesterday evening hadn’t been the plan. How
could it be, we didn’t even know the place existed! We were on
the run from at least one corporate hit team, and Morg’s been
running herself ragged looking for options and trying to keep me
safe. At that point, we were just looking for any port in the
storm. But this is where we’d landed, and even if the initial
‘hi, let’s get you settled’ didn’t take long… actually getting
things settled once we got to the suite… that took longer.
Normally, it’s something we’d have talked about all night, but
I’ve been… quiet. Even in the ways that don’t make noise.
There’ll be time to talk… and plenty to talk about… hopefully
soon. But not here. Not now.
Now… now is time for a late brunch. And by late brunch, I mean
I’m pretty sure it’s sometime in the early afternoon by the time
I meander down to the café proper, but that doesn’t stop me from
ordering a big-ass kaf… er… coffee… and a BLT—even knowing the
meat is actual meat, I’m willing to give it a try. After all,
I’ve heard about ghoul communities that use pigs as garbage
disposals. Seriously, when the semi-undead cannibals use an
animal to dispose of bodies, that animal deserves to get made
into breakfast, cuz it’s clearly harboring homicidal intent.
So, here I am, relaxing at the bar with my drink and a sandwich…
people-watching. Or watching for people. Or waiting to see if
anyone gets up the curiosity to approach me. We need to start
networking, after all, and the first part of that is getting the
lay of the land and seeing what we have to deal with. Maybe even
before Morgan wakes up.

The joys of remote work are that you don't have to go into an
office on the regular. The downside of being a department head
is that you end up going into an office that's a bit further
away on occasion. Which is why Molly is at the doggo spa and I
was on a plane to New York from Austin last night, and walking
down Madison Ave today.
The Old Lady had long since nixed the tradition of only one of
the feathered working for the company at a time. Come to think
of it, probably about the time she decided to hand over most of
the day-to-day to Diego. Before my time, for certain.
Regardless of my thoughts, my feet take me to the conference
room where I plop my butt in a chair and catch up on the
goings-on. One tidbit dropped in an encrypted e-file to a few of
us is that there's a new place to check out, with the dish on
how to get there. Turns out there'd been a nifty place in the
umbra back when that got kablooied with a lot of other places
some years back, but a new place by the same or some of the same
people has shown up. Each of us is coded for biometric entry to
a specific "executive washroom"... (I have to look up and roll
my eyes at the ceiling for that. Seriously? I thought being
granted a key to the executive washroom was a trope of
ridiculous finance bro movies like Wolf of Wall Street!) ...and
told what chiminage to offer the spirit bound to the full-length
mirror. When it's made clear just what kind of spirit is bound,
the chiminage makes sense. "Meep, meep" said aloud to a
roadrunner spirit.
After the meeting and a bit of small talk, I head for the
washroom in question and have my palm scanned so I can slip
inside. Feeling just a little silly, I stand up straight and
"Meep! Meep!" firmly at the mirror. A soft, answering "Meep!
Meep!" accompanies a swirl of grey over the glass.
Gnosis, difficulty 7 (average city street, just in case)
10, 10, 9, 9, 8, 6
I step through somehow even more easily than I had through the
doorway into the washroom and I'm in the foyer of a rather cozy
café.
Arete Roll: 6, 4, 1 - Diff 4 = 1 success.
There’s a game I’ve always liked playing. Most folks where I’m
from would call it ‘stupid wizzer tricks’, but they can all frag
off. See, I like to sit someplace and people-watch. And as I do,
I like to let my senses attune to the Astral, and read their
auras. It’s good practice and, you know, it’s informative: ‘Hey,
that guy’s chromed to fuck.’ ‘Hey, she’s an Adept of some sort.’
‘Hey, that guy’s actually two dwarves in a trenchcoat!’
Ok, that last one almost never happens, but you know, it’s the
sort of thing most of us watch out for, really. Not because it’s
dangerous or because it’s tactically important, mind you…
really, it’s cuz we spend a lot of time bored.
The job is, after all, to do as much planning as needed to make
the eventual operation go as smoothly as possible, as quickly as
possible. So if we do our job right before we go in, when we go
in can be just as boring as the rest of the time.
But that’s all back home. Right now, right here? Lucien says
things don’t work the same, and sitting here, watching the
people as they come in? I believe him. Everyone’s just…
‘normal’. Just people. There’s gonna be a learning curve
involved here, I can tell.
Take that woman standing in the foyer looking like she has no
idea what she’s here for. Reads as human. Just human. Can’t see
any real trace of magical activity, definitely no meta… drek,
she’s not even showing at HMHVV, though you’re not gonna hear me
complaining about that little detail, you know?
Mm. Not gonna hear me complaining about this
actual-freaking-bacon, either! Holy Hell, I dunno if this is
just because the Café is run by a nigh-deity, but if this is
what food is like in this new world? I can live with that.
Especially if we can get some of our tech working, too, get us a
solid edge.

I may not look like it, but I do know what I'm here for. To
check the place out. If it's officially sanctioned by HOS, then
absolutely it's going to be someplace to see what's happening.
And given that it's not on the same plane as, well, earth, it's
probably got connections to lots of everywheres.
First thing on the agenda is caffeine. I head toward a counter
that has a couple of rather elaborate-looking industrial grade
espresso machines behind it and a festive garland behind them.
"Peppermint mocha, no whip." I request, and press the button on
my watch that will let me tap-to-pay, looking around for a
terminal. There's one right at my elbow, with a beep once I
touch the bezel of my watch to the indicated spot, I turn back
and there's my drink. Nice. One sip and I know I'm coming back.
This is actually better than the stuff they've got at the HOS
offices, and since Diego really likes his coffee, that's saying
something.
I bet there's some kind of board, either analog, digital, or
both, for the type of community "hey, things are going on" type
of stuff you'd see on old cork boards at neighborhood grocery
stores. Somehow, I doubt missing pet posters make the cut here,
but subtle advertisements of "I can do this" or "I need this"
should definitely have a place.

She's charged about $2 less than she might have expected, and
the drink is large, and cheerfully festooned with a mini candy
cane for the holidays. Accompanying it is a golden coin, about
the size of a silver dollar:

smile. "Welcome." She adds, helpfully, "The board is for hiring,
selling, whatever connections you might want to other patrons,
since we get a pretty diverse group of folks in here. If you
want to post to it, feel free."
On the board are some noteworthy options, including the sale of
some very rare magical tomes, a notice for someone looking for
courier help on a regular basis between New York and Los
Angeles, and a note scrawled in the sort of handwriting that
suggests the person doesn't actually write things very often
seeking someone to generate realistic identity paperwork for a
fee. Written beneath the third one is handwriting of a much more
elegant sort telling the inquisitive to ask for Lucien or
Morgan.
She moves to refill Brigid's mug with delightful fresh 'kaf...
er... coffee, and smiles at the woman warmly. "Do you need
anything?"
((You two go ahead and do what you're doing, I just wanted to
make sure that the coin got passed to Amelia))

Emerging from Lucien's private suite, looking like she's had a
wonderful time Alicia makes her way out into the cafe proper.
She doesn't need to adjust her dress, in red, faerie silk with
silver trim, the colors of her house, as it is perfect already.
The same can be said of her flowing, wavy, black hair which has
every lock in just the right place. Even the lock of raven hair
that seems to be out of place, trailing down the side of her
face is just where it's supposed to be. Alicia is everything a
Sidhe should be, beautiful, regal, and confident.
Even though she's in her Fae Mien, Alicia still isn’t sure
exactly how she should be presenting. Though, she is far more
comfortable in her actual skin than the masque she wears for the
Autumn world. This cafe clearly isn’t the autumn world. At
the same time, introducing herself as Alicia is probably easier
for everyone. So, she presents as the famous actress she
masquerades as when she's not rescueing damsels in distress and
getting them out of that dress.
As she reorients herself from the debauched time she had before,
Alicia looks out to see two other patrons. One of them is
supernaturally hot; the other is rather plain. Now, Alicia
isn’t exactly the superficial type, but given two totally
unknown people, the hotter one is going to get talked to first.
So, the Fiona goes to over to Brigid (aka, the hot one) and
gestures to a chair across from her. “Is this seat
taken?” Alicia asks with an award winning smile.
She’s not even going to turn on the charm, just being her
normal self.

A slow, warm smile greets the Barista as she refills my coffee
and asks after my needs. Typically of a Sam, Lucien has hired
exactly the kind of attentive-and-’decorative’ staff I’d expect.
It wouldn’t surprise me if each one is selected to have exactly
the look that will bring certain folks back just to make small
talk, flirt, and let slip casual secrets they really shouldn’t.
What can I say, he has a type.
Mona—no, Monica (shut up, we only got here last night) gets a
slight shake of my head to go along with that smile, and a quiet
“Thank you, I’m fine for now. This really is quite delicious.”
And then I’m back to people-watching. Normal human. Normal
human. Normal human.
One of the recently-arrived normies is looking over the notices
now, and I let myself give her a somewhat covert once-over as I
take another sip. If she goes for the one saying to ask for
Morgan, she’ll get directed to me. It won’t be the first time
I’ve been Morg for team recruitment. After all, she can be the
ball-buster in the field, it’s helpful if people think she’s
friendly and upbeat between ops.
I might need to invest in a hooded cloak and mask or something
for fieldwork, though… you know, just to make sure nobody
figures it out.
Normal human. Normal hu—Stop the press, what is that?.
Wait, hold on, she’s coming over here. I mean, maybe she’s just
as bored of normal humans as I am?
“Please, be my guest, raen.” Wait, shit, stupidworld… “Ma’am.” I
nod to the bar chair as I give her my most winning smile. And
look, I’m not dumb, I know it’s a good smile. I’ve seen it on
Morgan. And seen how it works on Morgan. That doesn’t mean I’m
trying to be manipulative, though. I wouldn’t do that the first
time I’m meeting someone, especially not here. Wouldn’t want to
give Lucien ideas that I want to work for him directly.
“I was beginning to think everyone here,” I say, letting a touch
of amusement creep into my voice, “was… normal. Good to see
that’s not the case.”

Wow. Look at the pretty people. I recognize Alicia Hunter from
The Silent War and my head tilts as I realize that to be here,
she's probably got something beyond normal going for her. Makes
sense. Despite the fact that she could, she actually doesn't
rely on her looks to get her through life. Woman has some
serious talent.
She's introducing herself to someone very nearly as pretty, but
in a harder-edged sort of way. I watch them with the interest of
someone who appreciates art, eventually turning back to the
board. One notice intrigues me a little, though I don't really
have a lot of experience at it, I've done a little social
engineering. Perhaps I could actually develop my skills in that
area.
I post my own skills at transcription and connection with HOS,
though I include a caveat that I'm an employee, not anyone with
real influence in the company. But given HOS' beginnings as a
courier company, I'm certain that we can help in at least that
respect, so I ask Monica if Morgan Kenneally is around and get
pointed to the pretty one that's not the actress. Intriguing.
"Ms. Kenneally..." I interject when there's an open moment.

“I’m not familiar with raen. An honorific where
you’re from?” Alicia leans forward and adds with an
impish grin and a sparkle in her grey eyes: “Or does it
mean ‘hot stuff’ as the Americans like to say? If
you’re coming on to me, please keep it up.”
The coffee addict orders a mocha and a biscotti. Luckily Lucien
had some coffee liqueur to help Alicia’s cravings while
they were enjoying themselves. Otherwise the fae is likely to
get cranky. And when she gets cranky, Alicia is likely to
sovereign people into getting her some of that delicious roast.
While the barista is making her drink, the actress turns back to
Brigid. “Oh no, my dear. I doubt that most people here are
normal. Though not all of them are as glamorous as me.”
With a wink, she continues. “Or as yourself. You certainly
got the inside straight when it came to birthrights and
features. Almost a spitting image of a Sidhe. Lucky woman if I
do say so myself, though it must make the Autumn sometimes
difficult.”
Finally, Alicia offers her hand over to Brigid. “I’m
Alicia Hunter in the autumn. However, I am properly Chevaleress
Sealgaira de Dhorchadas Ni Fiona.” There’s more of
the Sidhe’s natural charm, but Alicia isn’t turning
on the jets, not really. She’s just being her friendly,
gorgeous, outgoing self.
However, then there is someone else, one of the women that
Alicia marked as plain by her standards. However, now that
Amelia is here, there’s no cause for Alicia to be anything
other than polite. Though Amelia isn’t here for her,
Alicia nonetheless gives the raven-haired woman a polite nod and
smile, letting her new friend, the Ms. Kenneally answer the
inquiring woman.

Dear sister, can you help me lie?
I’ve told the truth so many years
But no one seems to wanna hear that
I’m not someone else inside

“Something like that,” I nod with a smile. Of course she doesn’t
understand raen. Stupid, stupid, Brig. This isn’t home. No
matter how much it looks like it. And weren’t you the one
telling Morgan ‘English only’? Téch, get it together here.
“One sec… this might be biz.” One finger rises from my coffee
cup when she says to keep it up if I’m coming on to her, as the
woman from the foyer is now approaching. Somehow, I don’t think
this is a woman who’s used to being asked to wait, but she’s
talking in titles, so I do hope she understands the old axiom
‘business before pleasure’.

“That’s me,” I nod, giving the newcomer a bright, winning smile
and making the effort to turn on the charm, just a little. I end
up leaning back slightly against the bar, relaxed and confident
as I look her over, “What can I do for you, Ms…?”
