The most difficult thing in life is to know yourself. — Thales
of Miletus[/center]
Career-oriented interior designer returning to Kingfield, Maine
at Christmas time to inherit something and magically fall in
love with a sensitive guy in plaid. NPC

In her mind, there's a picturesque gazebo adorned with twinkling
lights and garlands in the middle of a park overlooked by the
town hall. Standing in front of this is a massive fir, covered
in more twinkling lights and kitschy play-dough ornaments
obviously made by the population of the local elementary school.
A light, fresh dusting of snow covers the grass, but not the
cobblestone paths leading to brightly lit shops lining the
street. Vaguely recognizable people walk by bundled up, but
smiling and chatting as they shop for gifts and sip from
steaming mugs while sitting at tables by street-facing windows.
A horse-drawn carriage clatters past off to her left with two
laughing couples, one older, one her age.
Above, the sky is slowly deepening from a gorgeous rosy sunset
to twilight, a sprinkle of stars just beginning to appear. A
warm amber glow comes from old-fashioned streetlights.
At the edge of the park holding the gazebo, a sign festooned
with more garlands proclaims "Welcome to Kingfield."
Of course, none of this is how the real Kingfield, Maine looks.
The real town is a fairly typical small New England town, with a
downtown filled with a mix of mom-and-pop storefronts and a few
empty ones here and there, a few fast food restaurants, a
regional gas station convenience store chain, a regional chain
grocery store. But the town office isn't a stately Victorian
mansion overlooking a large park. It's a perfectly utilitarian,
relatively modern repurposed house with a small sign out front.
There's no gazebo, no monstrous tree.
In her mind, she's an interior designer annoyed that she has to
come back to Kingfield from The Big City™ to meet with her
uncle's lawyer so she can inherit (and immediately sell) his
beautiful, stately old Victorian house. Of course, she
anticipates pushback from the Historical Society, since the town
is somewhat famous for its Victorian architecture, and Uncle
Walter's is one of the best examples.
In reality, Uncle Walter works at the bottling plant and lives
in a perfectly serviceable clapboard house built in the forties,
and she works at The Woodsman, a breakfast-and-lunch restaurant,
and Rolling Fatties, a local burrito spot and food truck. She's
lived in Kingfield her entire life, and is content to do so.
But right now, she's walking down the street with a mixture of
faint annoyance and determination on her face, all but ignoring
everyone greeting her.
