“To be rooted is to say, here am I nourished and here will I
grow, for I have found a place where every sunrise shows me how
to be more than what I was yesterday, and I need not wander to
feel the wonder of my blessing.”
― Kevin Hearne, Shattered
Druid of Ordú Croí de Ndúl (Verbena)
[[A couple months prior to a moose named Aubrey wandering into
Ashley's life...]]
The Hales wanted us in New England. Well, they wanted us in
Boston, but we agreed that the apron strings could be used to
strangle us there, so we "compromised" and found ourselves in
the wilds of Maine.
The MacTiernans were overjoyed at the thought of having a
satellite compound on the east coast. Branching out from Arizona
found a lot of support among the Aunties. And anything that
found a quorum of support among the Aunties was fait accompli.
So an eight acre lot with a snug house and shed was purchased
with mildly alarming alacrity. With the Aunties putting up about
seventy percent of the price, the MacTiernan-Hale compound was
born. Not that there's much other than the initial house and
shed. There is a cleared area, almost as if already waiting for
a practice and sparring ring. I think that might've been what
sealed the deal for Ash.
We've really wasted no time in moving into the house.
Fortunately, we'd actually been given a week before Aunties and
uncles descended upon us. Pells and a couple of weapons racks
went up under a small half-roof pretty much by magic, even if
most of it was the magic of expert craftsmanship. Windows were
replaced, insulation and appliances upgraded, solar panels
installed, and even a little grading for a couple of cabins and
an herbarium occurred in just a few days.
A custom-built cabinet by Uncle Roland is installed in the
basement and looks for all the world like it grew there.
Sithneach showed up within an hour and bound the cabinet to a
portal to Anywhere. Auntie Diana had been to the Nexus a few
times. The look in her eyes when she talks about the place makes
me twitch, but it turned out to be handy when word went out
about its successor/resurgence. The MacTiernan Compound in
Arizona got a portal and since Sithneach could be wrangled, so
did we.
But now, everybody has blown away again, some back to Arizona,
some off to other adventures, and Ash and I have some room and
time to breathe.

Brotherhood of the Oak
I was able to avoid most of the
Aunties by using the excuse that I was too busy ritually
cleansing the small grove I'd claimed as my sanctuary. I did
need it. Even the most wild of places always seem to have the
touch of man. Garbage strewn about. I spent the first two days
of my cleansing just cleaning up the garbage. After that it was
meditative combat practice, rituals of cleansing, and sacrifices
to Diancecht, Goibhniu, The Morrigan, and Lugh.[br][br]I carve
protective spells into stones and build and alter by hand from
large stones. It takes the better part of two weeks to finish,
and I'm in the grove the entire time, completely in the nude,
with only Lann'darach to keep my company. The MacTeirnan Aunties
were powerful and wise. They knew better than to entire my grove
uninvited. Only my bond-mate could enter, only Wendy. She had a
standing invite.[br][br]Still, I wasn't in the grove the entire
time the Aunties were here. THe last week of their visit I,
unfortunately, finished my task, and I needed a shower something
fierce... Look, keeping yourself clean with a sharp rick will do
the trick, but it's nothing compared to a hot shower... The
Aunties also got a show because when I came out of those woods I
wore only what the gods had graced me with. After the obvious
jokes and catcalls, I eventually got myself cleaned, and was
promptly put to work...[br][br]All that, however, was now past.
They're gone, it's just me and Wendy again, and I'm where I
usually am, training at the pell with Lann'darach.

I, too, spend some time preparing and cleansing an area for a
sanctum. From clearing out trash to blessing the quarters to
sacrifices to Anu, Airmed, the triune Brigid, Flidais, the
Morrigan, and the Dagda to planting trees in specific places and
nurturing each with just a titch of quintessence, the
foundations are laid for the herbarium to be the heart of my
sanctum and eventually the compound we'll build here.
I spend a bit of time with Ash in his grove, joining in his
sacrifices, since both places will be sacred for both of us. He
is in turn invited to the rituals for my sanctum.
Now, he's training at the pells with Lann'darach, and I'm
smacking a simple post at various points with Scáthmhaide. Both
of us are sweaty, grunting with various strikes, and pretty much
having a ball.

THWACK! I land a solid blow, but it slides off right at the very
end. I need to work on my precision. If I'd been going for a
head blow, I might've either done more permanent damage than
intended or not quite enough to get the job done.
But that's why we train, to learn where we need to improve and
do just that.

I finish the set of moves I'm working to perfect and turn toward
the bench. "That sounds like an excellent idea." I'm not
breathing hard, but I am breathing deeply.
I drop into a deep crouch, then a few stretches, making sure my
muscles are properly cooled down, then look up with a grin. "We
both need a shower beforehand, though." I waggle my eyebrows
exaggeratedly. "And we should totally save water." Anyone
looking at me can practically see a halo above my head with the
wide, innocent eyes that accompany the last statement.

the house. [br][br]Look, I'm not saying the best showers take a
minimum of an hour, but there was no hot water left for miles
around when we were done... Coming out of the shower I feel
refreshed, and rejuvenated. I dress simply, jeans, tan boots, a
simple grey pocket-T, and a coat that matches the color of my
boots. Once we're both dressed I smile and head down stairs into
the basement. I let her enter first, then we're there, the
Anywhere Cafe roll credits.[br][br]I look around to see if
there's anyone we know. At the moment there isn't, except for
the regulars. Professor Huxley, who I've never spoken to really,
but have heard stories. Lucian is around somewhere I assume.
Otherwise, it's just customers we don't know. I look at Wendy.
"Find us a seat, I'll go order our usual." I say with a smile,
then do so...

I jump as he smacks my ass. Somehow I never anticipate it, even
though he does it nearly every time. It's a small way to give
him satisfaction, so I'm not too arsed about it.
So, saving water isn't exactly what happens, but watersports
aren't exactly known for that. Just because we said we were
going to doesn't mean we actually do. Refreshment and
rejuvenation are the order of the day. I'm feeling quite relaxed
as well.
Soon, I'm in a long-sleeved tee and jeans, with dark brown boots
similar to the ones Ash is wearing. I yoink a sweater a couple
shades darker than my tee from the coat tree near the front door
as we head downstairs. Three twists to the left, a single to the
right, and push the door open and we're there.
I nod to Ash and head for a table, leaving an empty between us
and the trio looking through a rather dusty leather-bound tome
and conferring quietly.
[[And we're open from here]]

they know where we're sitting. I say thank you to the waiter who
took the order then head back to the table. "It'll be here
shortly." I say as I turn the chair and sit on it backwards so I
can rest my arms on it.[br][br]I take a breath... "So...we need
to put the word out about the compound. See if anyone is looking
for a chantry like ours." I say with a smile. It's not really a
chantry yet, but it will be, someday soon. One for Like-mind
mages and sorcerers. People who respect and revere nature and
the gods that created it. I fidget with the ring on my right
middle finger. It's silver, with the symbol of Lugh, the
Brotherhood's patron, on it. It's important to me, almost as
important as Wendy. "Any ideas?" I ask with a smile.

I'm used to Ash handing me Lann'darach, so I don't even think
about carrying it with Scáthmhaide to our table. I lean both
against a chair in easy reach. When Ash joins me, I nod at the
news of the food on its way.
"We do need to get the word out, especially since we're actually
getting a good start on making it a chantry. Though I don't
think we'll call it that." I give a small, delicate shudder.
"The Aunties have a rather strong prejudice against that
particular concept. Say it's for hidebound Hermetics and their
lackeys." In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it was somehow
hidden in the fine print of the loan agreement. "Since you're
centering your sanctuary in a literal grove, we could go with a
different word for a group of trees. Like Glade or Roundel." I
smile at the last one. It's a fun word. "Though, since roundel
is specifically a clump of thick rounded trees, and we're among
the pines, it might not work quite as well." I shrug. Ooh, look
at the tangent Wendy went on!
Getting back on subject, I look around and blink as on a wall
near the coffee counter there's a board I somehow never noticed.
"Uh, that's probably a good way." I point at it. "Put some kind
of flyer or something on there so people who come here can see
it and they can spread the word for us."

Brotherhood of the Oak
The board is a good start, but we need
more than that. A lot people will talk right past fliers without
even looking twice. The become just part of the background until
something really makes them stick out. I'll have to think on it.
As for what to call the compound...I hate that word. Sounds
too...culty... Anyway...[br][br]I'm thinking about what she's
saying to me. I'm not zoning out, I promise! "My Sanctuary will
need warding." I say looking at her when she mentions it. If
we're going to have people coming and going, I need it
protected, more so than it already is. Yeah, it might seem a
little out of the blue... I blink and shake off my distraction.
"Sorry. What about The Thicket at Caer Carrasbassett? Tie
ourselves into the local history. Maybe draw in native shaman as
well as witches and druids." I offer, hoping it distracts from
my distracted comment about warding my Sanctuary.[br][br]As for
recruitment... "Perhaps sending animal and spiritual messengers
to those who are in need of a place like ours?" I ask. I've seen
other witches and druids so such things. I don't know Wendy's
