Lucien listens, his attention engaged fully, but he's keeping
quiet... perhaps trying to avoid stepping on his own toes, or
someone else's, or perhaps just comfortable in that state of
being receptive.
Ailey takes the fore; she says, "That sounds... difficult, and
filled with potential roadblocks along the way, with conflict in
memory and the like. I admit, I often choose the harder course,
myself, just because it's the right one, but I can see a great
many reasons behind doing what you did. Most of them amounting
to some monumental change that left you different, but allowed
you to bring back some of what made you who you are before it. I
don't pretend to know the answers, but I can usually see some of
their shape when I examine them for a while."
Her smile is genuinely kind with that. The next question allows
her a graceful way to change from a topic that may be painful to
Lena, with that smile turning to a mischievous grin.
"Well, on multiple occasions I was home in bed with my husband
at the same time I was giving lectures on Philosophy at
Berkeley," she says blithely, her expression amused. "I've also
been giving lectures while accompanying Finn, my husband, into
dangerous places on wild adventures... I can't get into too many
details because his people also have secrets, and they're his to
share. But suffice it to say, lots of action, lots of adventure,
and once, a recalcitrant camel on a faerie road that wouldn't
get the bloody hell out of the way."

The proprietor remains silent, and so Lena's gaze shifted more
pointedly towards Ailey taking in her insights, her smile
growing till her teeth showed and a chuckle escaped as she
brought up her cup and took a sip. "Do you perhaps work in
counselling or psychotherapy?" She inquires as she tilts her
head. "With the skills you've described I imagine that would
fit, or be a diversion from time to time." She set her cup down
once more and nodded.
"You'd be very near the mark. The saved version of myself
was...from an earlier time, another version of myself you might
say." She briefly let her gaze flick towards Lucien, waiting to
see if he had anything to share before she leaned towards Ailey
once more, one rising up to be a perch for her own chin as her
elbow rested on the bartop.
"I can easily appreciate the need for discretion but you make it
hard not to probe deeper. Regardless it sounds like you've put
the ability to good use. Do you find it difficult to
reintegrate the memories and experiences into a singular body? I
suppose some of that dissonance would be allayed given both
bodies were not necessarily experiencing the same things."

Ailey laughs at the question gently. "No, nothing like that. I'm
psychology-adjacent -- my vocation is philosopher, specifically,
ethicist. I teach, both magic and philosophy, and I write books
that sell very few copies except for the most recent one called
The Ethics of Joy. That one is about joy and managing life to
seek it, and that one's had some modest success. I also have a
nonsectarian religious group called the Temple of Divine Joy,
which has some similarities to the Unitarian Universalist church
in that it doesn't have specific religious dogma, just a place
for people to gather who want like things: an ethical life where
they can seek the good in everyday and help make it grow to
improve the world."
A pause. "But, as a leader among the Ecstatics, I do offer
counsel to mages and our allies when they need a sympathetic ear
and perhaps some advice from outside the normal thinking box.
The truth is, I thrive on making people's lives better. Even in
small ways. I'm also known for connecting people to other people
who might suit as friends. The world is built on connection, and
the more we reach out hands to one another, the more the world
improves. Small ways become larger movements."
She listens, then, about the re-introduction of Lena's earlier
version to her current mind. "Well, I'd offer to help you refine
things a bit, but it sounds to me like that would be a very
personal series of choices and not something to entrust to
another mage. But if you want to discuss deeper technique with
someone, I'm skilled with mental workings, and I might be able
to help you craft rotes or refine methods." She draws out her
phone and hands it to Lena after opening up a contact page. "If
you want to give me your contact info, I'll give you mine as
well, and if there's a need, you can just pop through here to
the House of Joy, and come talk to me. Since I'm almost always
co-locating, you should be able to find me pretty readily either
here or there."
She offers a grin at that comment about probing. "I've an oath
about revealing specific information, alas, but I can point you
to a few books on the more general subject." She holds up a
hand, then goes around to the many shelves around the room,
locating a few books and bringing them back to Lena. "I don't
mean to be a tease about it, I promise!"
And then more questions about co-location -- Ailey nods,
smiling. "It's very disorienting unless you work Mind weavings
alongside to process the disconnections. I never colocate
without a mental shunt to process the experiences and memories
and sift them to the part of me where they belong. I will say
that it takes some getting used to, because I experience three
times as much life as I would without the co-locations, so I
have to bolster my brain to make more connections to properly
store it all. When they say you only use ten percent of your
brain, that's a fallacy -- you only use about ten percent at any
given time, but it varies as to which parts you're using at that
moment, or any other."
A little laugh follows, and she adds, "It helps that I'm a Time
master, so I don't really have any issues with linearity of the
memories that coexist in the same moments. I just sort of...
split-screen them? If that makes sense? They link, they coexist,
but they retain individual integrity."

Lucien is beaming as he listens, as proud as if Ailey was his
own child. "She's a marvel," he says to Lena, as an aside. "I
haven't met many mages in recent days who have the innate grasp
of the life of magic that Doctor Huxley does."
He waves aside Ailey's faint blush, and adds, "It's also a topic
I have some experience with, myself, but I don't think my own
coping mechanisms for it would be helpful for you, because
they're created through... rather a different metaphor."
His smile is infectious, and genuine... but there's still that
sense that he really isn't what he seems to be, not entirely.

Lena picks the coffee back up, taking a longer draft of the
liquid and savouring the mingling flavours. She focused on the
additive, that little bit of divinity that Lucien had added to
the mix. In this moment she wished she had a better grasp on the
material side of the spheres, but her skills had always lay in
the less tactile spheres. She savoured it regardless attempting
to denote its sensations, to separate it from the notes of the
coffee and cream. Her gaze flicked briefly to the tesseract that
was the bar behind Lucien, a thoughtful look on her features
before she returned her gaze to Ailey.
Ailey speaks of the religious group once more, and this draws a
nod from the Orphan, as she makes a mental note to look into the
group further. "You spoke of your sect before, perhaps I will
have to take a look, while I do not currently adhere to any
specific sect or teachings within the religious sphere I always
find learning about new ones to be...thrilling." She notes that
final word with a quirky grin and a subtle nod, her eyes
alighting briefly before she turns to other topics.
"As for assistance in regards to my faculties." She tilted her
head in consideration, her eyes casting along the surface of the
bar before laying smoothly upon Ailey once more as she tapped
the rim of her mug. "I would be remiss if I turned down such an
offer. I had support in spades not that long ago, but now I work
mostly on my own, Tapestry notwithstanding." She took the phone,
and after a moments consideration typed in a number, along with
her name.
"I appreciate the offer from both of you." She says offering a
pointed nod to Lucien. "I'm not certain if this is some manner
of traditional hospitality, but regardless you both do it well."
She turned towards the books then that Ailey returns with, her
smile widening once more as she set her coffee cup aside and
smoothly, carefully lifted the top one to look it over, turning
it in her hand before she smirked and winked at the woman. "Of
course, who would ever believe someone so erudite would tease
hmm?" Her grin widened just a fraction before she set the book
down.
"As for the matter of reintegration...time you say?" She nodded
thoughtfully, her smile falling away as her lips puckered for a
moment in thought. "I've only recently begun to grasp the
rudiments of temporal manipulation... perhaps I'll focus my
efforts in that direction for the time being, if nothing else it
might help me seperate and compartmentalize some of the
existential wrinkles in my memory." She nodded a little more
deeply this time to Ailey.
"Thank you."
