What if you fly?

Lucien doesn't miss a beat as he adds cream to the concoction
he's making; his words never stop for such mundane matters. He's
clearly used to multi-tasking. There's a quiet joy in this small
act of service, also; it would be missed by most, but to those
who have, themselves, served, it speaks as loud as cannons.
"You are welcome. In all senses of the word. It's... a hard
story to tell, but Taliesyn deserves to be remembered, and I
like to think she'd like this place a lot. She was... well,
still is, somewhere... a wondrous person. I've not contacted her
since her death, mainly because I felt she deserved some measure
of peace after all the things she'd seen. But someday, I mean to
thank her more deeply, personally. And I'm not certain I'd be
allowed to speak to her at all."
That's a weird thought -- permission? Huh. Who knows?
He smiles at her and this one is a warm, boyish smile, one
devoid of any artifice, one that brings forth light and joy with
its very presence. "The 'secret sauce' is a touch of the glory
of all that is divine. Just... a tiny touch, because human eyes
cannot behold it in its truth, even Awakened ones, beyond a
point. It's hard to explain how it ends up in a bottle, aside
from saying 'it's captured light from an archangel who gave it
willingly.' Which it is."

Ailey looks over at Lucien with those last words, suddenly
startled -- surely this can't be a surprise to her? She parts
her lips to speak, pauses, and then finally surges forward with
the words anyway:
"Lucien is... special that way," she not-explains, offering the
hint of her own smile as a result, a helpless one. There's clear
worry in it, though, and she sips from her own beverage,
apparently trying to shut herself up.
She's not good at deception, though, so she finally says,
"He's... connected to something greater even than us." And with
the 'us,' she clearly means Mages. So what is greater than
mages?
Gods, incarnae.
Hell, some mages are fragments of gods, even.
"But he can be many things at one time, and thus, he chooses to
split a large portion of who he is into this, and spending his
time with us, making us happy and sharing with us. I'm grateful
for it."
She shushes Lucien when he is about to interrupt and smiles at
him. "It's all joy, Lucien, and thou art divine, as are we all.
Joy is the seat of the soul's highest aspirations." She adds
toward Lena, "I'm something of a universalist when it comes to
religion... I recognize that not all of the stories can be true
at once, but all of them can be true in their own places and
their own ways. If that makes any sense."

It seemed Lucien was not merely a mage who reveled in
glory or held radiance within. Ailey claims that
he is something beyond mortal flesh, a facet of divinity in one
shape or another. For Lena's part this revelation does not seem
to spark any particular reaction, her head tilting ever so
slightly as if considering the man through a slightly different
lens before turning her gaze towards Ailey once again.
"That is a very.." Her chin dips a fraction as she adds.
"Egalitarian view of faith." She offers as she shifts slightly
in her chair, turning to take Ailey in more fully now as her
face retains that curious little smile. "Many might argue that
by its very existence that there can only be one truth, one
divine, one perspective of which all is made real and one." She
raises a brow before bringing the coffee slowly up to her lips.
"I find it all to be quite fascinating." She pauses, the coffee
held just before her lips, the smell of it filling her nostrils
with warmth and delight. She forestalls the pleasure of its
imbibement to look back at Lucien once again. "By all thats been
said one might take from observation and deduction." She tilted
her head again. "That what you added was a touch of distilled
you?" The brow rises again, the coffee held steadily aloft as
she awaits his reaction.

Ailey nods slowly in return to that remark; her expression
remains in that same calm, pleasant warmth that it's held all
along. "Well, faith is very personal, and... often
contradictory, for some of us. And I cannot say which truth is
the ultimate one, only which ones I've personally encountered in
some way. I've learned over the years that it's a lot like the
old story about the five blind men encountering different parts
of the elephant. We only know what our experience and our senses
tell us, and unless we remain open to the idea that there are
things well beyond our beliefs, we are limited to just that.
It's a good thing, to believe, to experience."
She looks over to Lucien, and then back to Lena with an ease
that says that these sorts of discussions are her stock in
trade. Divinity, philosophy, the Greater Things Beyond Us... all
of that.
"I didn't believe in some things until I met people or entities
that connected to them. It's been... well, it's like the song
goes. What a long, strange trip it's been. But I wouldn't change

Lucien smiles broadly at Lena. "Oh, very sharp, yes." He bows
his head. "That's me. Or a part of me, at least. I am... rather
more than would fit into one body, but we were made to serve,
ultimately, and that has not changed. I still serve. Just not in
the way I once did, and not in the way people think."
He opens his hands in a gesture that might be helpless, or might
be welcoming.
"I am a part of the greater whole that is called the
Lightbringer. And this part of me... is here to offer humanity
choices. I always hope that they make the better, wiser choices,
but it isn't mine to choose for them, of course. Note that...
I'm just an octave of Me. A servant, though not a very humble
one." A saucy wink follows that. "But yes. I still am what I was
made to be. So... a touch of that Glory given to me once upon a
time is shared among those who might find it welcome. Even if
that welcome has worn a bit thin with time."
He studies her face with eyes that are assessing, but in a
strangely kind manner. Some of the beneficial parts of his Self
must be packed into this shard of the archangel Lucifer.
"I hope that doesn't make you uncomfortable. I am, in this

some... interesting footnotes."

A conversation of dualities was at play, with what had started
as parallel conversations diverging rather quickly into their
own branching and organic paths. That quirky smile seemed to
broaden just a bit as Lena continued to hold that cup aloft,
feeling its warmth. "You know one might consider that a health
and safety violation..." She mused, blue eyes widening in
amusement as she brought the drink to her lips at last and drank
of the acidic brew. She sighed contentedly, an addiction sated
perhaps before she turned her gaze towards Ailey her smile
showing teeth now.
"I think I'm going to like you." She said with a nod towards the
woman. "I often find that it is our limited perspectives, that
while valuable for they inform not only our own existences but
that of reality itself, they inevitably become locked, and at
times forced upon not just ourselves but others.
This...calcification is the primary fault of most

ten." She says the last part with mirth more than displeasure,
but there is a certainty in her statement as being apart of her
beliefs.
"Which makes this man..." Her tone leading as she turned her
gaze back to Lucien. "Rather interesting." She leaned forward
then, taking another meaningful sip from the cup as she watched
Lucien carefully. "If its true that you are apart of a greater
whole, tell me...does your individual beliefs and understanding
of existence differ from, and inform the whole. Or..." A brow
raised. "Do you simply bow to the overarching being, a vessel,
perhaps even simply a pawn of its will and intent?"

Ailey roars with laughter at the comment about the health
violation. "You must be at least this tall to drink archangel
essence!" She's very, very amused at this, and her laughter
melts down to giggles as Lena speaks once more.
"Oh, I hope so," she agrees, "Because I already like you, you're
willing to spar with a stranger about deep and meaningful things
without it becoming a slog of being offended or worried. We
should take joy in the largest things as well as the smallest."
She nods, listening, her blue eyes both intent and merry. "It's
true," she agrees. "We lose sight of the largest truths when we
focus on the smaller. I think the Buddhists had a lot of things
right when they said that life is suffering and our goal as
human beings is to reduce suffering. Bringing joy to people does
that. Lightening their loads does that. But I do see a sense
of... that calcification you mentioned... when there are groups.
I have a small group of my own called the Temple of Divine Joy
-- it's more of a collective philosophy, despite the name, but
it takes on things in a similar manner to the Unitarian
Universalists. We believe that the form of your worship doesn't
matter, as long as it increases the joy in the world. So paint a
picture or sing a song, meditate or play in a meadow. It doesn't
matter; all that matters is that the world becomes better. So
share that joy. You know?"
A pause. "And I was not intending to proselytize for my own
group -- just using it as an example. We're mostly about who
finds us and needs us. I don't really... recruit?... so much as
I just welcome people who need it."
The motion to Lucien makes Ailey smile, and she nods.
"Interesting is a good place to start," she says, "But I'll let
him answer for himself on this one."

Lucien is following the conversation with delight; seeing people
choose, and choose wisely, is always a joy for him.
For obvious reasons.
"That is a profound question," he says to Lena, nodding slowly.
He's not beaming, now, but his expression is one of pleased
surprise. "I... and We... are a collective, but each part of us
is independent, in most senses of the word. But we act as
individuals. The part of me who oversees the afterlife is
different from this part of me, but we are part of the same set,
if that makes sense. In the same way that a mess kit includes
plate, knife, fork, and spoon. If I am the spoon, I work as a
spoon, primarily. I can call on the other parts to serve in
other ways if needed, but... my choices are my own."
He explains further, "We do our own thinking, because each part
of us manages a vast amount of things. We do share decisions and
opinions, of course, but when I choose, it's me, the Lucien you
see before you, and not the greater deific form of the
Lightbringer, or the form of the Satan -- which is a title, mind
you, and not a name -- but it is in accord with them, for the
most part, because we are specialized parts of the same greater
being. It's simply a more complicated form of how most human
beings have a persona they use at work, and another for their
families, and a third for their lovers, and so on. Lots of
overlap and commonality, but there are some aspects that are
unique."
He shakes his head, and adds, "I don't see myself as a pawn.
Once upon a time, I was made to a specific purpose. But I
rebelled, Heaven was closed to me, and I took on a different
purpose. Many of them. Someday I may touch Heaven again, or I
may not. The idea of never doing so again pains me, but what
brings me joy and hope is humanity in its best moments. This
aspect of me dislikes having to mete out punishment, but it is
sometimes necessary, because that is a part of the role that
fell to me. Did I choose it? Yes, in the sense that I chose to
do what needed doing, because I was the one it was suited to. Do
I choose now? Oh, yes. Every moment, every day, I choose and
choose and choose again, and serve Mankind, and there is a joy
in that that surpasses even service to the One, as you refer to
Them."
A pause. "Because honestly? Humanity overall is a lot more
appreciative." His smile is crooked, a touch wry, with those
words. "And Mages are, in truth, the future of Humanity, if the
will of the Divine is to be obeyed. And in the end... I am still
a creature of service, whatever I may choose or prefer. It is
the purpose for which I was made. So I am... like you, but not.
Your choices are infinite. Mine are only nigh-infinite. The
difference is vast."

Lena would under most circumstances be considered astute,
learned, maybe even wise, she certainly carries herself that
way. There is valuable, perhaps enlightening information to be
learned here and Lucien offers quite an explanation of his
existence.
This is the first moment of stillness, one that lasts longer
than is tacit in this moment. It starts slowly there is a tic at
first, her one eye twitching slightly as her smile slacks a bit.
Given the woman’s demeanor this does not feel in character, but
then she’s screwing her eyes shut as her smile settles into
something neutral and tired as she places her free hand over her
eye, her fingers splayed.
“A…rather ideal situation it would seem.” She offered in
Lucien’s direction as she took a slow breath and sat up once
more, tilting her head from side to side as if stretching her
neck before she settled and seemed to return to her normal self.
“I would be very interested to experience your mindscape.” She
said as she leaned forward as she picked up her drink and sipped
it once more, letting the flavour steady her.
Slowly she turned back to Ailey and tilted her head slightly her
chin rising just a touch as she seems to focus on the woman.
“A kind belief system, how do you and yours rectify the issue
that not all can be joy? There is sadness, pain, fear…so much
fear.” She shook her head. “How do you deal with such things as
may well stop some individuals from experiencing joy in any
appreciable amount, let along an amount that could be called…..”
She pauses for a second as she took another breath. “Valuable.”
She turned her head towards Lucien once more, her eyes a little
narrower.
“Does your hypercube happen to have acetaminophen in its
depths?” She inquires, keeping it casual. “I seem to have
suddenly developed a rather poignant headache.”

Lucien regards Lena with some concern; her reaction seems to be
the act of someone on the verge of having a stroke. His lips
part, and he regards her with an unbreaking gaze, assessing, and
then relaxes a bit as she actually speaks.
"I apologize. Sometimes my need for a dramatic moment makes
things a touch... awkward," he says sincerely, that English
accent giving the apology some additional gravitas.
"Ideal... I am not sure about that. Given infinite choices, I
would have, perhaps, tried to not be cast out. But in the
fullness of time, that may change."
Or it may not, his expression says, but he's not exactly
regretful about his rebellion.

"Well, all the passions matter, and are crucial. That's a fairly
common Ecstatic point of view. But for me, it is all a part of
the whole. We must know pain to know joy for what it is. Would I
deny someone their truths? No. But would I do what I can to keep
them from harm? Yes. I won't and can't interfere in the truths
within someone's heart and mind. But I can make sure they don't
lack what they need. Even I can't solve everyone's problems, and
it wouldn't be wise to do so, because then they don't get the
gift and joy of growth, it's true."
She falls silent for a moment, and then the small Englishwoman
smiles ruefully.
"Sometimes it means walking a very tight line between what I can
do, and what I should do. It's not an easy set of choices to
make from moment to moment."
She holds up her hands helplessly.
"It also helps that I can exist in more than one place at a
time, so that I can do more."
The request for a painkiller sends Lucien under the counter for
a fairly standard looking bottle from a first aid kit. The
side-eye makes him blink, but he offers over the bottle and a
glass of water, saying, "I am sorry for any part I had in
providing the headache."

Lena takes the pain killers and tosses a few into her mouth,
swallowing them down without assistance from the coffee before
her. Her mouth hung open for a moment as she took a deep breath
and then her gaze shifts slowly between the two masters who
existed on either side of her. It was on Lucien that she settled
her gaze finally and shook her head. "You've done nothing." She
said as a smile slowly crept back into her features, the coffee
brought back to her lips as she sipped it once more.
"As you have made choices and paid the price to be here and now.
This is one of the prices I pay." She said as she tapped the
side of her head with her free finger. "It's hard for the
structure of the mind to house two, integrated versions of the
same conscience." She smirked, just a hint. "But not impossible,
that said it can create a few...crossed wires."
She'd look back to Ailey then, a slow nod offered to the woman.
"So like Lucien you exist in multiple places at once?
Intriguing." She seems to think about it. "Is this something I
can expect from many of the individuals who visit the cafe?" She
seemed to consider the information, found it pleasant and
smiled. "Regardless, I'm very eager to know more."

Lucien
HTML https://anywhere.infinimata.com/ooc-information/room-host-and-staff/chance/
There is freedom waiting for you,
On the breezes of the sky,
And you ask, 'What if I fall?'
Oh, but my darling,
What if you fly?
NPC | Baristo and Proprietor of the Anywhere Café

He ohs and looks at her with renewed curiosity and a touch of
sympathy as well. "Oh, that must be difficult. How dreadful to
be at constant war with one's own body. If ever you need aid,
please, just ask. No price attached, sincerely. May I ask how it
happened? If you'd rather not, we can of course drop the topic."
He fetches the coffee pot and reaches over to top off her coffee
as well once her hands are clear of the mug, then widens
brown-gold eyes to regard her with that weirdly infinite gaze.
Well, maybe not so weird.
"Existing in multiple places is not so hard once you've the
trick of it. It's learning to channel your consciousness in
multiple realities that makes it hard, really. And that's just a
matter of a little multi-tasking."

Ailey grins at Lucien good-naturedly and teases, "Showoff." She
turns to Lena and explains in greater fullness: "It's more
difficult to master the mental part of co-existing in multiple
places than it is to learn the physical part, because you have
to kind of channel all the right reactions into the right part
of you. Having a good command of Time magic helps a lot,
though."
She hrms and says, "Possibly? I mean, I haven't asked people how
many of them can co-locate. Not that many of the folk at my
chantry can do it yet, because the House of Joy is mostly a
teaching chantry for newer mages who are still adapting to being
Awake, as it were. I'm actually also there teaching a seminar on
Mind work at the introductory levels right now, so..." She
laughs softly, draining her mug and putting it on the counter.
"I find that more than two of me at once gets too confusing even
with a lot of magic to keep things flowing. The most I've done
is four, and that was a disaster. But I probably try to do too
much at once with each of me. Hrm. What else can I tell you? I'm
happy to expound further!"

Sharing was healing, telling your story, even if it only allowed
you to voice your inner self it chipped away at trauma, at fear,
at isolation. That said sometimes there was such a thing as
oversharing, especially in the world of the magi and somethings
people were not willing to hear, or simply did not want to.
There is a weighing look to Lena's gaze aas Lucien offers to
help, and more asks to know more of what happened. She shifts
then, adjusting her spot on the stool before taking another sip
of her coffee and shaking her head.
"No aid necessary, I wanted this, which is to say I did it to
myself. I overlayed an old, stored version of me onto the
existent version of myself. While it may cause some.." She bites
her lip at this. "Physical issues from time to time, the value
from doing so is enormous, and not something I would wish to
undo or change." She smiled as the moment seems to pass. "It has
literally made me who I am today, and has given me...well I
wouldn't call it a purpose, but a course in life."
She turned to Ailey then, a tilt of her head and a quizzical,
thoughtful look on her face as she leaned towards the woman.
"What is the most interesting thing you've done using multiple
bodies?" Her lip twitched a little bit as she waggled her brows.
"Im sure someone could get up to all forms of mischief."
