the ground behind her while David is kicking down the door to
the Other Place.
“In,” he gestures with the gun. “I’m right behind you, so don’t

Mirriam marches through the door, David walks in after her, and
the portal closes behind them.

The vision continues for a while, just sitting there focused on
the necklace. But that’s all I get. The necklace just rests
there.
…How did the necklace wind up in the case file, then!?
You know what?
I don’t care. I have what I need. The reason my spell failed is
because Mom is just on the other side of wherever that door
lead. Maybe it’s the Umbra. Maybe it’s the Dreaming. Maybe it’s
something entirely different. I don’t care.
I’m going. Now.
…as soon as I’m ready. There’s no telling what could be on the
other side of that door when I get there. Not only do I not know
where it leads, but it’s been more than a decade since then.
So I better be prepared for anything.

I retreat to my bedroom, where I find my armor. It’s nothing
fancy, it’s just training stuff -- but it’ll do for a spell
bunk.

The thought that charging into the unknown, without backup, on
my own, is a Bad Idea™ doesn’t even occur to me. I’m white-hot,
razor-blade focused on finding mom and my uncle.
I double-check the locket, still clasped around my neck, and
take a deep breath through the air filtration systems in my
armor. I sound like Darth Vader, look like a space marine, and
I’m well armed.

I appear under the moonlight in front of the shack, next to the
abandoned ‘67 impala. It’s exactly the way I saw it more than a
decade in the past -- except somehow, the door is standing
again.
Well, if that’s not a sign I’m supposed to open it, I don’t know
what is.
“Justicia Poetica,” I say aloud through the speakers on my
helmet, the voice somewhat fuzzed up like an Imperial Storm
Trooper, and I reach out with a heavily armored hand to turn the
doorknob.
It opens to a well-lit, noon-day jungle. I hoist my battle-axe
over my shoulder and step through the door.
I’m coming, mom.
