I don’t know how long I sit there, sobbing. But it’s a while.
I’m left staring at this locket with more questions than
answers. I knew I was liable to get hurt when I started to dig
around where I’ve been told not to -- everyone’s parents are
just people, and I never got to realize that about my mom -- but
this?
I exhale, getting control of myself, and place the locket on the
table. Focus, Eve. This is a new lead. You can work with this.
Set the pain aside for a moment and just barrel on through.
Ignore it. Tuck it under the rug for now, sweep it up later.
Or, you know. Never. Whichever comes first.
I can do things with this locket that the investigators before
me never could. I can find out where this necklace was the night
my mother vanished. I can read it’s memories, see what there is
to see.
…
I can just outright use this as a sympathetic link to find her!

I sweep the table clear of all the papers, the box, everything,
in one motion of my arm. The idea doesn’t just hit me, it
crashes through me and I’m already on my way to doing it. I lay
the locket down on the table, alone by itself -- free of clutter
and surrounding detritus.
I pull out a piece of chalk and draw a circle around it. I break
the circle at each of the four cardinals, and between those
breaks I pull tarot cards, laying them down and paying close
attention to their meanings in relation to the directions they
connect.
With this insight, I concentrate and pray to Gaia. I hope this
ends well…
Correspondence 2: Locate Mom
Taking her time, several hours go by here.
Difficulty 3 + 2 (Correspondence 2) = diff 5
+1 diff for hidden or distant target = diff 6
-2 diff for taking her time on each roll = diff 4
Roll 1: 3, 6, 6 = 2 successes
Roll 2: 8, 3, 4 = 2 successes, 4 total
Roll 3: 10, 5, 2 = 2 successes, 6 total
I’m concerned about wards, so I take a lot of time building this
spell up. After all, daddy didn’t just ask some mortal
investigator to dig up info on Mom. He has supernatural
resources, too, and they wouldn’t have just forgotten to use
basic magical tracking, would they?
I take so long working this magic I build up a sweat. And with
every passing moment, my anticipation builds with it. And then,
all at once, I unleash the magic and let it fly, seeking out Mom
and --
-- nothing.
The spell just returns nothing.

I stand there, staring at the locket.
“No,” I say, my hands shaking even though I’m white-knuckling

Animal Magnetism | Faerie Affinity | App5(Captivating) | Legend:
The possibility of Mom being dead hangs over me like the shadow
of a falling piano, and until I prove that piano doesn’t exist,
I can’t rest. I’ve been in here for hours. I’m already drenched
in sweat. But I don’t care. I haven’t touched on nearly all of
my options, yet.
According to my notes, Mom was last seen twelve years go at 8:37
PM on Christmas Eve. I can look at that time and find out what
was up with the locket at that point.
Right. I can check both the memories in the Locket, and peer
through time. Breathe, Eve. It’s not even remotely over yet.
To go scrying through space and time I’m going to need a bowl of
water for a reflective surface. That means sneaking into the
kitchen and back without being caught by members of the Family.
I can manage that, right?
Wits 3 + Stealth 3 + Arcane 2, Diff 6
10, 4, 10, 4, 6, 7, 7, 8 = six successes, exceptional!
In a jiffy I’m back in the library with the bowl. Everyone’s
already in bed, I think, because I didn’t even pass a staff
member on the way back and forth.
I don’t put the locket in the water, because I don’t want it to
suffer water damage. So I just… wear it, for now, I think is the
best course of action. I draw several Tarot cards and place them
in a circle around the bowl, reaching through time to the last
time my mother was seen by anyone, using the locket as the
centerpiece of my vision.
Time 2 + Corr 2: Gazing into the past using the Locket as
a link.
Three successes needed. Difficulty 3 base for coincidental + 2
for highest sphere + 1 for hidden target = 6
Spending one Quint per roll = -1 difficulty (5 total)
Taking time per roll = -1 difficulty (4 total)
Arete 3: 10, 1, 7 = one success (1 total)
Arete 3: 2, 10, 7 = two successes (3 total)
The spell works and I see a vision shimmer into the surface of
the water.

They’re standing in front of the ruins of an old shack, out in
the middle of the desert. There’s no roof. The walls are only
about a foot high, broken and rotten and sun-stained. The front
door is strangely still intact, standing taller than the subs
the walls left behind when whatever destroyed this place
destroyed it.
“Justitia Poetica,” he says as if announcing something, and then
angrily kicks the door in. It collapses inward, but it opens to
