“I don’t know,” the man says. “They retreated into the tunnels
when we hit the Manor.”
My shoulders visibly relax. That’s probably why they haven’t
returned my calls, and with the Manor under attack, they must
have holed up behind one of the wardable chambers.
“Why are you doing this?” I ask.
Don’t look at me like that. Look, the guy’s already been
mind****ed. I can’t un-**** his mind. Might as well get the
information I need out of him before the spell fades.
“Backup,” he says. “If the kidnapping failed, we were going to
take the family hostage and make you give up the Ring.”
…Right! I forgot all about my attempted kidnapping. Figures it
all ties together.
The part that they want the ring is the basic assumption I was
already making, so that doesn’t surprise me. My whole family’s
dedicated to protecting the Ring -- and obeying it -- so I would
assume a supernatural attack on the Manor had something to do
with that.
“Who wants the ring?” I ask.

I stand up as tall as I can (which clearly isn’t very tall, I
know) and sigh. Only one reason a mortal can resist the command
of a Sidhe. I remember Mom telling me that their mind-control
had a weakness -- if the command would result in the death of
the victim, the strong of mind can resist it.
“Whoever it is, they’ll kill him for revealing their identity,”
I say.
“I bet it’s our mysterious spider-lady.”

they interrogate the man, but not far enough that I'm out of
sight. I lean down and poke a root with my finger, trying to
wake it. Once it is, I smile. "Excuse me, but have you seen the
people who live here, or happen to know where they are?" I ask
it with a smile on my face. I figure the root might be part of a
larger system that might be cover a large enough area.

After the man had run out of answers for them, he dismissed the
Dictum. No point in torturing him needlessly. "That seems to be
about it. It was what you needed, or part of it, I hope?" He
raised an eyebrow at Eve.
Other than that, he didn't look at faces to see who thought he
was war crimes and who didn't. He returned and smiled at her,
taking her hand and giving a small squeezed. He cared whether
SHR thought he was comminuting war crimes and that was it.

Interesting. Eve has a ring someone wants. Badly. And that
someone is willing to kill to protect their identity. It sounds
like finding Eve's family is even more urgent.
Katherine might have the right idea. I follow the direction she
went just because I'm utterly curious to see what she might be
doing. When she questions the root, gently, my eyebrows go up
again. This woman just keeps surprising me.

I place my two fingers on the captive’s forehead and put him to
sleep. He slumps in his chair.
“Yeah,” I say to Janessa. “I’m not at liberty to discuss too
many details, but my family has guarded this ring for
generations. It’s a faerie artifact.” I motion to the obviously
magical, elaborately designed ring on my right hand.
“As far as a panic room, I think I know where to look. You’re on
the right track. There are a few chambers down there that only
have one entrance or exit, that are easily warded. Cellphones
don’t work in the tunnels, and wards would block my magic from
finding them, so it explains a lot.”

Meanwhile, by Catherine and Lanier…
“Yes,” the root whispers back to Catherine. But that’s all it
says. It doesn’t share what it knows, because it wasn’t asked
what it knows. It was simply asked IF it knows. It doesn’t even
specify which part of the question it’s answering.

[hr]Well that was helpful... I have one question remaining. The
cantrip was powerful enough for three. I have to think It needs
to be a good one. It takes me a moment, but then it dawns on
me... I look at the room with a smile and I whisper "Where in
the tunnels did they go?" It's all been whispered of course.

The root is exceedingly helpful. Only not. When Katherine asks
where they went, I nod enthusiastically. This ought to get a
better answer.
Eve sounds like she has a couple decent ideas to start with, so
this ought to give us a clue about which one of those is the
more likely to pan out.
