“Each of us has a door to walk through, maybe a thousand, and if
we don’t walk through them, we aren’t alive. We aren’t human
until we walk through that gate regardless of what’s on the
other side.”

Paintings are easy. Don't bother with the frame, and the
security measures are as rote as pouring a bowl of cereal (milk
after cereal in the bowl, by the way). I'd gotten to the point
where I nearly slept through nicking a painting.
But the Sistrunk Gallery in Waco has a study for the Ecstasy of
Saint Theresa by Bernini. A sculpture ought to be a little more
of a challenge. Yes, most of the security measures are similar,
but the getting out is going to be a titch more interesting.
There's also the fact that it's still in the back room, and they
haven't even advertised that they're planning to show it. It's a
coup, but not one they're quite sure what to do with yet.
So I'm going through the steps again in the tiny space where a
couple of shelves in the supply and cleaning closet of the
gallery don't quite meet. Blend in with the crowd for an
up-and-coming local artist's showing, slip away in the midst of
the toasts to their success, fold myself into the spot I'd found
earlier, wait for everyone to go home, go back, nick the piece,
get out. A detail or two gets elided, but that's the gist.
Until I fall back through what I was damned sure was a solid
cinderblock wall into... a coffee shop? I tumble against a low
table set between a couple of comfortable chairs, fortunately
unoccupied, and bounce to my feet, the look on my face calling
to mind a cat that meant to fall off the side of the bed.

I have a hard time talking to people I don't know. I always
have, even before I chrysalized. People are, difficult. Eve was
easy because I was protecting her. I'd rescued her, and sworn a
minor oath to serve her until she could take care of herself.
I'm unsure if that is the case or not, so until I am, Eve is my
Lady, and I her knight.[br][br]I am a large woman, with blue
skin and curled horns. My blonde hair is cut short, and looks as
if it was done with a knife, because it was. I wear armor that
gleams and is covered in futhark runes, as well as a templar
tabard, but it's not exactly correct. The cross is similar but
more...more... There are symbols on my tabard that wouldn't be
on a templar's tabard, but the colors are correct, a red cross
on a white field. There is a sword at my hip, also stylized like
that of a templar's but again somehow off. The shield at my back
is similar. I wear no helmet as it wouldn't fit over my
horns.[br][br]Then the lady falls through the wall of the cafe.
When she begins to look around, she'll see me. I am hard to
miss. I'm hunched over, but she'd estimate me to be somewhere
around 8 to 9 feet tall. "Are you okay, My Lady?" I ask her,
moving closer to see if she needs help.

My left eyebrow quirks up like when the biiiig blue chick asks
me if I'm okay. "Fine. But I'm certainly not a lady by any
stretch of any imagination." The very notion is ridiculous. Even
if I'd ever cherished any fantasies of my "real" parents being a
kindly prince and princess that would whisk me away to a life of
luxury and adoration, they'd been put paid to long ago. Like
about three years after I'd been found sleeping on a church pew.
Not that I'd ever actually seen one, but this must be a troll.
My eyebrow comes back down and I blink a couple times, looking
her uuuuuup and down. A couple of times. "Wow. This must not be
an everyday coffee shop."

"No, it is not. This is the Anywhere Cafe, if I'm understanding
it correctly. This is my first time here as well." I say and
just decide to sit cross-legged on the floor. "I am Katherine
Dragon's-Fury, a Knight in service to Lady Eve." I say,
motioning to the gorgeous redhead talking to the gorgeous Sidhe.
Not everyone in here is fae, but a few are.[br][br] Then, I
remember I'm supposed to be finding help. "You wouldn't be
interested in an adventure, would you?" I ask, hopefully, but
nervously. Though I do have the wherewithal to elaborate. "Lady
Eve's home is beset by shadow creatures, and we are attempting
to gather heroes to help in liberating it. From what I can tell
of Lady Eve, she is wealthy, there will likely be a reward." I
add that last part, because money motivates some people, and we
really need the help.

"Ooookaaaaay..." is my brilliant response to her "explanation"
of where we are. When she sits down, I breathe a purely internal
sigh of relief. I do have some manners. But the crick in my neck
was going to be a problem soon. I plop with some grace into one
of the chairs and take a beat to be thankful I hadn't smacked my
head on the table.
"I might be persuaded to join an adventure..." I allow. After
all, I'd gone after the sculpture to alleviate boredom as much
as anything else. Money is another happy-making word. Yeah, I
have a vault of cash that I could swim through like Scrooge
McDuck, but it's a bit on the shallow side, even if I convert it
all to singles.

[br][br]"Lady Eve is wealthy. Her home, a manor in the desert
outside of Las Vegas, is under attack by creatures of shadow." I
reiterate. "We attempted to attack the shadows, and while I did
destroy one, many more came upon me. I was nearly killed. Lady
Eve saved my life." I explain. "Her family is trapped somewhere
within the manner." That, I think, is the most important bit. We
need to rescue Eve's family. It seems very important to
her.[br][br]"I am a knight, and have skill in magic. That is
what I bring to the fight. If I may, what skills could you
bring?" I know I offered her to join this adventure without
knowing her skills, but I figure if she's here, she's likely
powerful in her own right.

"That doesn't sound like a fun time." I nod. I may not have any
family, per se, but I've seen some good ones, and if this Lady
Eve actually wants to rescue hers, they must be at least halfway
decent. There are a few pieces of families I'd happily let
freaky creatures of shadow have at. Of course, just burning the
house down (or blowing it up) with them inside was an option,
too. A shifty-eyes emoticon flashes across the screen of my
mind.
"I've got a few tricks up my sleeve, but mainly I'm really good
at getting into and out of tight spaces." I shrug briefly. The
dark grey cotton I'm in might clue someone in on just how good I
am. Black leather might be what you see in movies or shows, but
it's actually highly impractical. It doesn't breathe for when
you have to sit in a tiny spot for half of ever, and dark grey
is actually easier to hide in the shadows. Few places are
actually inky black.

[br][br]"It was not." I answer. Getting nearly killed is never
fun, and it's happened to me a lot more than I'd like. Being
trapped in the labyrinth was certainly an adventure but also a
nightmare. [br][br]"Those skills may be of use. We should speak
to Lady Eve. I need to meet with her there." I point to a table.
"In a few minutes. She, like I, is gathering people to help
retake the manner." I say and push myself to my feet. "Come, we
will order food and drink, and await my lady there." I say, and
head toward the counter to do just that, order food that is.

Short and to the point. I like it. "Food sounds..." and there's
abruptly a gurgling from my midsection that finishes that
thought. I wander over to the counter and queue up behind Ms.
Dragon's-Fury. "I'm Lanie, by the way." I leave the r off the
end, mainly because it's more memorable. "Lanie Steele" I add,
all Bond, James Bond. There's a few reasons to use that as a nom
de guerre. Reruns of Remington Steele with one of the better
foster dads, Dakota Johnson's character in a property I have no
intention of ever seeing but also no way of avoiding some
information about. It just works.

[br][br]"It is a pleasure to meet you, Lanie." I don't get the
Bond reference personally, but it's okay. I order my food, a
burger and fries, and head to the table Eve and I are to meet
at, doing my best to not hit light fixtures with my horns. They
will bring the food once it's ready, I assume. Or they'll call
out my name. Either way. Eve should be ready soon.
