The House of Joy is a small chantry just outside Sonoma,
California, built within a series of midcentury-modern styled
homes, including one small bungalow that serves as the
chantrymaster Ailey Huxley's home with her spouse, Finn.
The chantry is set up legally as UU-style church retreat
grounds, with the organization itself being a legally-recognized
church with all appropriate benefits of the same. There aren't
many actual members, but enough people on the registration rolls
to make it workable as a church.
The chantry is supported by a religion named the Temple of
Divine Joy; it qualifies as a cult because one of the tenets of
belief involves one's sense of wonder and belief being divine.
There is a small but growing group of believers around them, and
the people running the religion part of things are doing so
non-cynically, with genuine hope and belief. Religion members
are invited to occasional events at the chantry proper, in order
to contribute their belief and fervor to rituals that need it.
The membership includes a dozen and a half resident mages and
sorcerers, with another dozen or so who spend a fair amount of
time there but don't live on the owned premises (the refurbished
motel). Most mages do eventually move on from HoJo's when they
have reached the point in their progress when they are no longer
apprentices/students... usually somewhere around Disciple level.
Some stay to help with the teaching and the chantry, or remain
associated with the chantry as part-time instructors.
The membership is usually close to capacity, but the leadership
of HoJo tries not to turn away anyone who needs a teacher. They
do have connections to other chantries across the US, as well as
a few in Europe, for the sake of helping students connect with
other teachers, or Mages find new places to live.
If you want to have a character who comes from this chantry,
talk to Chance and we'll figure out where you fit into the
chantry hierarchy and all that good stuff. Even apprentices and
sorcerers get a voice here.
