Garret claps his hands together with a smile as she says that.
"Perfect! A quick trip to the basement and we'll be all
finished!" he says, though his tone clearly implies at least
some level of awareness of it not being that simple.
"No blessing is truly needed, but I of course won't deny it
either," he then adds, giving her a nod in recognition of the
thanks before he turns back towards Aubrey.
"So, I'm going to be nice and let you go first again," he tells
Aubrey, again spinning around to actually discern the easiest
route to the basement. As much as any 'easy' route could be
founds through this tainted much. The spirit-vacuum ritual
approach really is tempting, but something something scalpel
over hammer.
"Do we know what the 'heart' looks like?" he asks the spirit
without actually turning around anymore, lest he start to get
dizzy.

The spirit smiles. “You will know it when you see it,” she says,
mounting Rhox. “I have faith.”
Aubrey accepts this at face value, and nods to Garret. “The door
to the cellar is up on stage to the left,” she says, motioning
down the aisle as NineTails and Rhox retreat to one of the empty
houses surrounding the plaza.
“We’ll have to cut a path right through the shadow,” she says,
reaching out with her toe to test the oily blackness like she
was testing the temperature of a body of water before diving in.
It ripples and seethes in response to the Troll’s foot, but she
does eventually find purchase on the now-rotting hardwood floors
beneath the dark oil. That harrowing empty whisper bubbles up
again as she takes yet another step forward. The darkness
doesn’t seem to want to contend with her.
“Yeah that’s right,” she grins. “Run, you little shits.”
She turns to look at Garret again. “Stay close,” she says,
before wading into the shadows sword-first.

"Good enough for me," the mage says as the spirit assures him
they'd know it. It either means it will be incredibly visible
obvious, or incredibly spiritually obvious, and he's pretty
confident he can handle either.
Stepping close to Aubrey as she starts to test the shadowy,
disgusting waters, he puts his blade down to his side but
pointed forward slightly so it can drag against the floor and
help keep the grossness at least a little at bay.

"Don't have to tell me twice," he says, following along. His own
resonance clashes with the impure ones in the shade, and for now
he seems to be largely untouched because of it. Largely. "When I
get back home I am going to take the longest bath known to the
history of man. Empires will rise and fall in the process of my
cleansing."
Crunch. Another spider got in the way of his sword.

Our intrepid heroes wade into the church carefully and
methodically, stepping into the shadow troll-first. The journey
seems to become more perilous the further they get -- it just
feels dangerous. Paranoia creeps up the spine, like that feeling
you get when you know you’re in the wrong neighborhood.
The door to the basement breaks down easily under the troll’s
might, scattering spiders every which-way as the rotten wood
breaks free of the hinges when she shoulder-checks it. Beyond
lies a small stairwell that descends into inky blackness, where
the shadow is much thicker and colder than it is upstairs.
There are definitely sounds of motion drifting up the stairwell
to the character’s ears. Something down there is… moving.
“Can you make swords glow?” Aubrey asks, peering fruitlessly
into the yawning abyss that is the stairs.

"Yes, but... I think I can do us one better than that," he says.
Using his sword, he carves another circle into the wall nearby,
a decently large one, and reaches through it — yes, through it,
despite it only looking like a mark. As he pulls back, then he
has a guitar in hand, one that has both an awakened spiritual
presence, and a chimerical mien of its own (largely colorful and
ornate) overlaid atop what otherwise seems like a normal
acoustic guitar. He puts his sword into its sheath and starts to
tune the guitar; it only seems to take a half second or so, as
it adjusts itself as much as he does.

A moment later, he starts to play. Any thought of stealth is
clearly far behind in his head, because the music is loud. He
starts to sing, and play, but there's more to it than the single
guitar line. The spiritual side of it begins to play too, the
rhythm and beats kept by a 'tapping' and a harmonizing line, and
then the chimerical mien starts to do the same, picking up the
bass. Whenever he hits a harmonized vocal, too, his voice seems
to split on its own.
He's not just trying to cast bardic inspiration, though.
Instead, the shadows surrounding them in about a few foot radius
suddenly begin to shriek and burn, breaking down into pure
primal energy that fills the air around them. As it does, it
begins to glow, creating an aura of light that's bright but
shines outward, making the pair of them hard for others to focus
on, but for Aubrey and himself the light only reflects off their
surroundings.
It should also offer a bit of protection against anything
attacking them, but it's not quite a ward, just a deterrent.
Defiler-spray.
Ruling that because the shadows are being burned away in
a radius around Garett, Aubrey doesn’t need to make a WP roll
for the stretch of the journey involving the stairs.
Aubrey was a simple woman. A little tone-deaf, truth be told,
but she loved music as much as the next fae. She nods her head
to the rhythm of the strumming and tapping, and when the light
spreads around burning the shadows up like so much kindling, she
smiles almost wickedly.
“Cool.”
The stairs creak under the weight of the troll, and Aubrey
pauses -- gently stepping, spreading her weight across both feet
as evenly as possible. She tries to make each step bear her full
weight for as little time as possible, waiting at each point
that her feet were on multiple steps before taking the next step
down.
Dexterity 3 + Athletics 4: Can she make it down the
rotten stairs without breaking them?
4, 6, 5, 5, 1, 8, 1: No successes
But it’s not enough. One of the steps gives way, and the troll
crashes through the stairs and down to the dirt basement floor.
To her credit, she’s cool enough that she doesn’t yelp in
surprise. Righteousness rattles across the floor, her armor
clangs and rings loudly enough that even if Garett hadn’t
musicked away their stealth, the whole village would know where
they were right now.
Falling damage 1d10: 7

“Ow.”
Garett is going to need to find a way down the stairs before he
can join the troll in the basement and see what awaits them.

As he finishes the song, the guitar itself continues to gently
play the chorus rhythm for a little while even as he straps it
to his back so he can remove his sword again. The magic remains,
of course, keeping them as safe as a little bubble of spiritual
purity really can.
Hearing the stairs creaking, he has to state the obvious,
"Careful, those stairs sound loose. They'll probably-"
Crash
"break..." as he looks down the newfound hole. She seems okay,
so he won't call too much further attention to it and risk
wounding her pride more than her flesh.
Dex 3 + Athletics 3: Your rolls are 8 4 4 3 4 3

He tries to slip down the hole himself and make it look easy, an
expression on his face like he's making the most graceful
landing, comparatively, but he doesn't quite stick the landing
as he falls, almost stumbling over entirely. He doesn't hurt
himself, at least. And it means the place is lit up.

The ceiling of the impossible cavernous basement is littered
with cobwebs dripping in blood and oil. The angles are all wrong
-- at first this seems par for the course with the darkness, but
then it becomes apparent that the darkness is actually eating at
the dirt walls and floors of the basement like acid. Erosion is
re-shaping the basement on top of the reality-distortion.
The floor is thick with a dark, wet, slick sludgy gunk, and the
further away from Garett the gunk reaches, the less of it burns
away. On the far side of the basement, mounted to the floor and
ceiling by thick webbing, is a literal black heart whose
arteries spread like cracks in reality along into the shadows.
It’s pumping freezing shadow into the air with a quiet
thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.
More important though is the loping figure of a Crinos Garou
between the mage, the fae, and the heart. Or, what’s left of a
Crinos Garou. It’s fur was probably brown at one point in time,
but between the rotting of it’s flesh, the oil, and whatever fel
magics are animating the creature, it’s far more horrible.
The troll scrambles to her feet, snatching her greatsword up and
taking a defensive stance between the mage and the werewolf,
shock and disgust splayed across her face.
“Burns-the-Whiskey!?” she blurts out in surprise.
The Garou snarls, not recognizing it’s name.

Ah, an angry, corrupted werewolf. That brings back memories. The
absolute worst memories, but memories nonetheless! It certainly
fits the rest of the motif of this place, and it's better than
some of the possibilities that had gone through his mind.
However, he's still not one to want to take one on firsthand, so
his sword comes up in a purely defensive sort of position for a
moment, but thankfully it goes for the larger target. The larger
target that's more likely to survive it. The larger target he
can theoretically heal later if something goes wrong.
"Keep it busy!" he yells as if the troll has a choice, quickly
looking around for their target. The large, beating heart in the
corner. NineTails was certainly right that he couldn't miss
that.

What follows sounds like a cool mystical invocation to one not
in the know, but to a spirit he literally just yells the words
"~FIRE! NOW!~" as he points his sword towards the heart, the
symbol he'd burnt into it with his earlier spell glowing once
again.
The flame alights anew, this time with more typically colored
red and orange flames, although a white hue seems to surround it
in an aura nonetheless. Rather than simply surrounding it this
time, though, that bolt of fire shoots forward, slamming into
the heart to hopefully consume it.
He really hopes.
