Honestly, the trip through the booth is a bit more jarring than
ending up in the cafe to begin with, simply because he's used to
spending so much time in the Umbra or Dreaming. He's not stupid,
of course, lest he flirt with Bedlam/Quiet or let himself
transform into a spirit, so he does keep himself anchored, but
it's like getting your sea legs back. Takes a moment.
"I can't say I like what you've done with the place," he
mentions upon noticing first the emptiness and then, well, the
literal bleeding walls. Not really his vibe.
More jarring, of course, is the suddenly approaching chimera;
apparently he has at least some amount of combat instinct
because he does draw his (solely) chimerical blade without much
of a second thought. Thankfully nobody too normal is around to
wonder about that gesture.
But, also thankfully, it's soon skidding to a stop, and Garret
lets out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding.
"I do, yes!" a name, "Garret. I'm here to help, apparently!" he
seems to know as much about the situation as the troll knows
about him. "What am I helping with? Shadow something is all I
know so far," he brings the chimera up to date on his own end.

Rhox sighs. It’s becoming increasingly clear which one of these
two is the responsible one. “Of course he- er, she? Didn’t tell
you anything. Why would she?”
He clears his massive throat and motions to the church.
“NineTails is Aubrey’s totem. Currently, the church is under the
sway of some kind of strange shadow attack,” he says. “We don’t
know it’s exact nature, but we do know that it obeyed the wizard
who showed up and attacked NineTails. When Aubrey killed the
wizard, the shadows went fucking berserk and started trying to
eat NineTails like some kind of shitty horror movie. She’s in
there now, hopefully un-corrupted.”
Aubrey nods. “Yup. Ideas?” she asks, planting the tip of her
gargantuan sword on the ground and resting both her hands on the
blade’s pommel. “Shadows are hard to stab.”

Garret's happy to get at least some somewhat better detail to it
all, but it still leaves something to be desired.
"Shadows are hard to stab. But I can fix that. I hope. Let's
see," Garret mumbles. Gripping his own sword, he fishes under a
sleeve and pulls out what looks like a particularly strange
charm bracelet. He picks one off of it with a snap, then places
it against his sword.
He gives it a bit of a *smack* and it leaves a burning mark in
it. A glowing, burning mark. A glowing, burning mark that smokes
a strange light gray, alights in brilliant white flame, and then
jolts off more like lightning to hit Aubrey's blade too, fueling
it with similar magic.
Quintessence swells through both of them, making them not only
particularly deadly to just about anything they touch, but solid
to both spirits and mundane reality even if purely chimerical.
Of course, he can feel reality swelling against that. He'll
really feel it later.
"I'll still want to get a good look at them, but that should
work on just about anything that wouldn't utterly slaughter us
anyway," he claims, looking over his own blade with one eye as
if to be sure the magic got through it all properly.
"Anyway, troll-sized combatants first," he says, "I'll do what I
can to back you up once I know what we're dealing with."

Headstrong, could take on anyone
Fianna Kinfolk | Troll
Aubrey watches as the wizard wizards at her sword, and figures
this is the right and way of things. Wizarding should be done at
blades. It’s much easier for her to process than what normally
happens when someone wizards at the problem directly.
She nods. “Troll-sized combatants first,” she reiterates, and
walks toward the church, blade in hand.
The party moves forward, with Aubrey on point. She approaches
the doors, which are sealed with some kind of shadowy ward, and
inspects them for a moment.
“...Wasn’t like this earlier,” she says, confounded for a
moment.
Time to see if this wizarding was as good as Aubrey hoped it
was.
She hoists the blade up and brings it crashing down at the seam
of the big double wooden doors, and the magic of the enchantment
Garett had placed upon Righteousness causes a hell of a
reaction. A big lightshow of sparks, lightning and fire erupts
when the blade comes in contact with the ward, and for a moment
the blade seems stuck there.
Then Aubrey leans into it, and forces her sword downard, cutting
through the wards and doors alike with a raw brute force only a
Troll would immediately bring to bare as their first resort.
When the cutting is done, she kicks the doors inward and they
crash open as the wards collapse. There’s a gust of musty, damp,
cold air that billows forth, and a chittering whisper on the
wind greets their minds rather than their ears. It says nothing
in particular, but it’s horrible and twisted none-the-less.
“Wait here, Rhox,” Aubrey says, motioning for Garett to follow,
striding into the church.
The inside of the church doesn’t even have a lobby. It’s just…
dripping in some kind of shiny black oil. It’s so cold the
troll’s breath is visible, and the deep shadows obscure any
sense of detail that they might be able to visually obtain. The
perspective of what is visible seems slightly off, as if the
angles and surfaces themselves were warped through some kind of
funhouse mirror lens.
Spiders skitter in every direction as the Knight’s boots step
onto the creaking floorboards, fleeing from her advance. Cobwebs
hang from impossible corners that shouldn’t exist in the first
place.
NineTails is nowhere to be seen.

Garret looks vaguely amused with her tacit agreement about who
goes first. That certainly makes it easier.
Gripping his own blade, for all the unlikelihood that he'll fall
back on that before anything else, he steps up near the church
with the changeling. Eying the wards for a moment, he starts to
go through some mental considerations as to the best way to deal
with it... only to end up on his back leg a moment as Aubrey
takes the direct route and a shower of magical sparks fill the
air.
Sometimes brute force is the answer though, because the ward
gives way before the combined magic of the blade and his
enchantment, although the reward of a musty breeze isn't exactly
the best one for the effort.
Awareness: Your rolls are 6 4 3 9 7 10 6 1 8 5
You had 5 successes
He steps in after her, bright purple eyes a contrast to the
shadow-filled interior as he starts to scan over the area,
getting a feel for whatever it is they're really dealing with.
His totem's guidance touches upon him from across the gauntlet,
and he's quickly frowning from both the mundane and spiritual
nature of the place.
"Oh I don't like this," he says quietly. "It's like the spirit
is bleeding into the chimerical here. But unlike my own
experience doing exactly that, it's like one bled into the
other, their spirits clashing rather than building upon one
another. Everything's... awful. Tainted spiritual resonance.
And..." a glance to the spiders. "Corrupted pattern spiders. Of
course."
Instincts clash as part of him wants to try just crushing one of
the things but the rest of him knows better.
Arete (Spirit 4 + Correspondence 4 + WP): Your rolls are
3 3 7 5 7
You had 2 successes (+1 = 3)
"First thing's first. I wouldn't want your Totem to be stuck in
anything like this for long. Hold still again," he says. He
places a hand on Aubrey's shoulder, angling his blade downward
and carving a scorched symbol into the ground.
He whispers something in a spiritual tongue, close to but
distinct from Garou speech (Iwapo), a combined invitation to the
totem spirit to rejoin with the one it's bound to and a lifeline
of spiritual rope to hopefully let her pull herself free of
whatever might have her. A voluntary but forceful summons. As he
finishes, he slices through the circle and magic fills the air,
the Dreaming and Umbra rippling around them.

Spirit
Garett would feel his spell connect - first reaching through
Aubrey and then after pressing through what feels to his mind
like a vat of sludge, gripping ice-cold chains, and breaking a
binding effect. The spell takes a little more concentration than
expected: Some force is required.
But it works.
Through the link of the spell comes a welcome contrast to the
oily coldness that surrounds the mage: A warm laughter of
several voices. Back along the threads of garett’s magic comes a
spirit.
She manifests behind him, panting, out of breath. A cold sweat
dampens her otherwise healthy fur. She’s weakened, but standing.
Uncorrupted, thankfully, though heavily wounded and low on just
about every measure one can be low on: Gnosis, essence,
willpower, everything.
“Many thanks,” she whispers, before collapsing.
Aubrey rushes to catch her before she hits the ground with the
one hand that’s not carrying Righteousness.
The troll gently brushes the spirit’s hair out of her face and
grunts.
“That’s step one,” she says, walking back to the front of the
church and loading the spirit onto Rhox. “This village is home
to my kin,” she explains to Garett. “We still need to purge.”

The mage himself stumbles back as the connection forms and pulls
the spirit through, like he'd physically been pulling on a rope
with all his strength that suddenly gave. He blinks a few times,
looking around and needing to remind himself he was still in the
thick of this place as the mild warmth from the spirit fades.
"You're-" a wince as she collapses, but thankfully the
changeling has her. "...welcome," added with a bit of a mumble,
rubbing the back of his head with the hand that was on the troll
a moment before.
Nodding then in agreement with Aubrey, he looks around. "Well,
the way I see it, there are two options here. One, I can attempt
to perform an hours-long ritual that in a place like this has as
much chance of failure and shunting me back out of reality as
succeeding, in an attempt to brute force it and just push out
anything that doesn't belong. Or two-" he puts his fingers up
despite not having done that for one, "we delve into the thick
of it; there's ultimately always some entry point, artifact, or
person. Rhox mentioned you already killed a wizard, right? Did
he have anything with him? A partner? Did he come from any
specific place? Any trail we can follow?"
He starts to look around even as he asks that. And in the
process pokes his sword through one of those spiders that gets
too close. A nice little flash of purifying Quintessence.
Oh wait, the obvious source is right there. "If not, let me take
a closer look at NineTails, maybe I can fix her up, and she can
tell us where exactly she was..."

Garret doesn't even bat an eye at being presented a spirit like
she's a broken toy that needs to be sewn up. That's really for
her to be offended about or not, and he has more important
things to do.
"Alright," he snaps his charm back onto his bracelet, and grabs
another one from it with a slightly different symbol. Rather
than pressing that to the spirit, though, he clenches it into
his own hand, pushing his Quintessence through it.
Speaking softly in the spirit tongue, to Aubrey it's likely hard
to make out like before, but NineTails herself can of course
understand it. It's a strange mixture of a request and a demand,
an implication in tone that a spirit would understand by her
nature but that those of flesh have no real analogue of. In
effect, he's drawing her essential nature back and to the front,
burning away any lingering taint and building her back up into
her whole self with a reference to that platonic form. That
totemic form, perhaps amusingly.
He holds his hand out, and white smoke starts to float out from
the charm like before, but instead of violently compounding into
flame, it gently wafts out and over the spirit, infusing her
ephemera and knitting her Essence back together.
5 sux means ten levels of Essence restored. And the prime

The spirit slowly regains her vitality as the smoke wafts over

fade leaving fur shiny, healthy and silky-smooth. Panting
becomes breathing, and soon she’s wriggling free of Aubrey’s

“You are kind,” She says to Garett, her posture now corrected
and standing as tall as she can stand, being only about five
feet in height. Her many bushy tails stand taller than she does,
intertwined and swishing to and fro making it nearly impossible
to tell how many there are.
Presumably nine. But stranger things have happened.
