       Opinion polls showed, month after month, that more than
       two-thirds of the population wanted Ortega y Murillo to resign.
       Most notable was the loss of symbolic efficacy of power. Once an
       image of stability and order, especially among the business
       sectors, The Ortega-Murillo marriage was perceived from then on
       as the embdiment of barbarism and chaos. The country fell prey

       Finally, hundreds of people, including leaders of social
       movements, especially farmers and students, were accused of
       "terrorism" and promoting a "coup d'état", and sentenced to
       dozens of years in prison. These terror measures were publicly
       claimed by Ortega and Murillo. members of the fsln hierarchyand
       the police deserted, and some were murdered.
