Drifting to Sleep Listening to Mozart’s Requiem, I Dream About
the Future

Moving down the aisle,
I grab a box of Life
And place it with my Gerber bottles.
I push the cart to check-out,
Where the boy bags my items
And takes them to my minivan
So I don’t have to do the heavy lifting.
I freeze in the parking lot
As a memory washes over me.
Once, I was a joyful beauty, wishing
For a prince charming,
The white picket-fence,
Cocker spaniel, and 2.5 kids.
Now, my wish has changed:
That the boy sees me. It bewilders me,
How, long ago, I was a delicious treat.
Men looked at me and their mouths watered.
How many times had they mentally
Undressed me in their minds?
The boy closes the trunk, and I drive away.
My last blissful, ecstatic, true moment
Of happiness was so long ago—
Back in the cherished high school years.
Today, I pine for the confines
Set out in crisp, clear words
Printed in that old, worn agenda.
I miss the lectures, the obnoxious jerks,
The crazy teachers and their piles of work.
I wish for my teams, my clubs,
My friends.
I am afraid of the mirror
Which looks at me with the eyes I hate,
The smile I hate.
The lines in the mirror haunt me.
I shiver as I recall the funeral
I went to this morning.
My best friend’s cold face,
Granite features lying in
A spray of gladiolas and mums.
His body, stripped and examined,
Was my body.
I think of his praising words—
How pretty I am, how exceptional.
But no one is truly exceptional.
No one can hold onto anything, because
In the end, we all amount to the same;
The common.
