Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Artiodactyla
Family: Iniidae
Genus: Inia
Species: I.geoffrensis
Biology[sup]{1}[/sup]
The amazon river dolphin is a large species of freshwater
dolphin indigenous to the Amazon/Orinoco basin; it is
distinguishable via it's larger size (than sympatric dolphins),
with males measuring out to 2.5m and weighing 160kg, while
females are smaller, measuring out to 1.96m and weighing 96.5kg.
The snout is long and robust, filled with small but sharp
teeth. These dolphins are loosely gregarious; found in small
pods of no more than 5 usually, but have been documented using
coordinated hunting in these groups. They feed on small fish
diurnally and nocturnally. There are few if any documented
predators of this large dolphin, but wounds attributed to
stingray barbs have been found on individuals.
