What's your opinion on cycling and laws In your area?

So yeah what's your opinion on cycling and laws. My opinion is
where I live:
1. There should be more cycle paths where I live in England as
the ones there are just suddenly end. Sure we have bus lanes.
There ok but you still have to be aware of Buses, Motorbikes.
Emergency veichles etc...
2. Some cyclists get overtaken to cloose and the Highway Code
(Veichle code). States Drivers should leave the same amount of
distance if you were to overtake a car to overtake cyclists.
There's no measurement distance stated for example (Correct me
if I'm wrong) in US. I think it's 3 feet, Spain and Holland is
1m. I think they should state a measurement in ours.
3. Cycling helmets (and comment the law as it's different in
some areas) and this is my opinion feel free to share your
opinions. I think it personally should be the law since bikes
are veichles and should follow the same rights and rules as
other road users. (only exception is speed limits). So
motorbikes/mopeds have to wear helmets by law (and even though
their helmets are different their still both technically
designed to take the impact for if you were to crash.) So why
not cyclists?
4. I admit I made this mistake the first time I had to lock my
bike up (and luckily It didn't get stolen) but learnt from it.
Most people seem to lock their bike up to the stand and frame
but because bikes have quick releases on the wheels lock your
bike to the rear wheel, ,frame and stand. (All bike stands are
stuck to the ground here)
I would like to see how different it is in your area and your
opinions on above?

Well, I never personally cycle because we live in a rural-suburb
area so every thing is pretty spread out. I do see a lot of
bicycle races though. A cycler going below the speed limit must
be in the right hand lane. My state recognizes bicycles as
vehicles so the laws are pretty much the same.

There aren't too many cyclists or really people who ride their
bikes in my town, it's kind of small but there is a super busy
road. I think here in Illinois (at least the area I live in)
have pretty fair but strict rules for bicyclists and nothing
really needs to change. I've never heard of an accident
happening because of it so it must not be a problem here.

I never cycle either. If I could I wouldn't ride on the road, it
would freak me out a ton lol. I would like to see more bike
lanes for cyclists as there aren't many here, though you never
really hear of accidents. It's a big difference here in Canada
then in Vancouver bike lane wise. They have it pretty awesome
for cyclists lol.

@SouthernSeasonPets Ok interesting.
@Zofia even though I live in a town that's more like a city.
I've hardly ever heard of accidents in my area. Although they do
happen you just don't hear of them that often. Although like
sometimes it's the cyclists own fault for ignoring laws.
@trixie is it not illegal to ride on pavement in your area? and
I agree with bike lanes especially also compared to Netherlands.
Another thing is people should stop stealing bikes and lock it
up no matter how long your going to be in for. Like our town
has signs saying Cycle thieves: We are watching you (Police
department name). The one mistake I see people make when locking
there bike up is locking bike up frame and stand. Whilst it's
better (Especially if your wheels have quick releases) to lock
up the stand, rear wheel and frame. Not to mention this would
obviously make it harder for thieves to reach.
Overall I find when I do ride on the roads that as long as your
following road rules (obeying Highway Code) (following traffic,
obeying road markings signs and traffic lights etc...) and are
aware, predictable things should be fine as long as other road
users are also following the Highway Code (veichle code I think
that's what it's called in other countries) it should be fine
and like if a driver does something you don't like dont argue.
It will escalate even more (and well it's against the Highway
Code here).
