The Last Fight

Her vision went blurry. Her heart pounding and head completely
off the rails.
“I am scared, I am scared I will do something… to myself”, she
spoke, her voice shaky.
Flashbacks came floating in… She thought she had a normal
childhood like every other kid, but there were secrets, secrets
she wouldn’t admit, not even to herself.
“Amelia”, called a familiar voice.
She looked around, her vision almost impaired, but there was no
one around, she was sure about that, she had checked every
corner of the room and locked it herself. She made sure nobody
came looking for her.
“Amelia”, called the voice again.
Visions were coming clear, but she wasn’t in the hotel room
anymore. She was at their old home. She watched her little self,
crouching under the table. She was definitely petrified, but
that wasn’t new.
“Amelia! Get back to your room”, the voice said. She saw little
Amelia running into the room.
“No! No! This can’t be true”, the same voice yelled, her voice
dry, her body shaking. It was her Mother. She knew she was
hallucinating, she tried to calm down. But there was no running
away from the past, is there?
“He is married!” someone said, sounding sorry.
She had no memory of him. Some old wounds were scraped again.
Little Amelia, sat close to the door, making no sound at all,
sinking in everything.
“What about us? How could he do this to his own family?” mother
said and burst out in tears. The vision went blurry again,
Amelia could feel her head heavy, like she was hundreds of feet
in the water, gasping for breath. Her heart begins to give up.
*Doors Shut*
Little Amelia ran towards her mother, who was then devastated,
lying in her own tears. She did what any 5 year old would do;
she hugged her mom.
But understood things beyond her age.
“It will okay, Mommy”, she said, but knew exactly, that her
family was anything but okay.
Amelia fell off her chair, her throat dried, she crawled to get
some water.
And lifted herself up with every ounce of energy she had. She
made her way to the bed, lying next to it was a small
refrigerator, she pulled the bottle out of it and drank in a go.
Her body heating up, she never felt so weak before, her head was
all dizzy, she just wanted to lie down. But she was scared to
fall asleep, all those visions, it was not a part of the deal,
she didn’t want to relive them again.
The pain was a lifetime agreement, she never meant to sign. But
her eyes, just too heavy, she couldn’t fight them anymore. As
she rested her head, the flashbacks came rushing back.
“Where is mommy?” little Amelia asked, concerned.
“She is someplace good. She will come back, you know that”, the
voice said, sounding very calm
“But Dad! I miss her”, her voice sad. A little piece of heart
was broken beyond repair.
“It will be okay! She will be back soon”, he kissed her and
left.
“I miss you, mommy”, she dropped a tear and tucked herself into
a pile of clothes; her mother’s sarees.
“At least this feels like you are with me, although I know you
might not come home after what happened. But I didn’t tell you
that, I love you, a lot and I know, I promised I would stay
strong, but I can’t. I miss you very much, maa”, she smelled the
sarees.
But the scent was still fresh to Amelia, after all these years.
She wanted to know why her mom left all of this sudden. Well,
she knew why.
Every morning where there should have been the smell of
breakfast, the divine aroma filling the room, making your
stomach grumble and chatters of your family members echoing all
over; instead there were noises of the vessels clashing against
the floor, some missed her dad. And the constant yelling.
Little Amelia would just stand there, watching, tears rolling
down her cheeks. Wanting them to stop. She looked at her
brother, she couldn’t apprehend his thoughts.
But he was also just a kid. Her screams would often go
unnoticed, but when things went totally off the hook, she would
intervene and cry out “STOP!”
That would at least make her parents stop yelling and go their
way. Dad rushes out, mom sobbing. And all she, a 7 year old
could do, hug her mom and say,
“Don’t cry, Mommy! It will be okay.”
They both sat silently, sobbing. But little Amelia knew she
should be brave, she has to be, for her mom. She looked up to
her mom a lot.
And like her, she was a great believer of God. She believed the
eternal God, the Father, who would lend an ear to anybody who
prays to him. So, she prayed, and sometimes penned them down-
“Dear God,
This is Amelia. You know me, right? My family is not like
others. Something that daddy did, made mommy very upset. I do
not want to ask anything for me, but my mom is a very good
person.
She deserves a lot of happiness. And that is all I pray for.
Mommy told me that God loves his children so much, that even he
gets jealous when we love someone more than him.
And then they are taken away. I will always love you more than
everybody, but please make my mom happy.
With love”
And put them in the backyard, where people rarely visit,
thinking that the little angels will carry them to God, she kept
her hopes high.
Amelia, felt very sorry for her younger self. Eventually she
came to know that her Mom found them, and well, God never
replied.
“You know I love you”, Mom said, caressing the little Amelia’s
hair.
“Our life is a little different, but everyone has got their
pathway to walk through…
Some have worse problem than us, but if we stick together, we
can face anything. You and your brother are my treasure, you
guys are my joy”, she said
The vision went blurry again…
“Why did you go?” little Amelia cried, hugging the sarees much
tighter this time. She may as well never know.
Her senses went active again, she felt the pain in her head
asking her to get a hammer and smash it, if that could help to
get rid of the pain, only if she had the strength. She managed
to sit and drink some water and poured some on her face.
“I can’t sleep!” she murmured
If her life were a book, then these chapters were torn, locked
in a case, tied to a rock and thrown into the sea, where no one,
not even she can ever find it. But now it seems like there never
was a book.
A closed door, inside her head, with all these memories was
suddenly unlocked.
The pain, physical and mental were now taking a toll on her.
Memories demanding their place, brain registering them and
reading out loud. And she could not help but relive them all,
again.
“Please God, Why all of this is happening?
Why us? Why can’t we just have a family like the people next
door, or like Rhea’s? All I ever asked you was this; this is all
I wish for. Please… please… please”, Young Amelia sat on the
stairs sobbing.
She can’t be seen crying. She had to be strong in front of her
mom. Her prayers were never answered. Although her mom came
back, and there were fights now and then, but mostly it was the
silence that grew. A cold silence.
The vision changed.
Amelia saw her 14-15 year old self in the room, the music player
was on, playing some very old and memorable melodies. The sound
of which made Amelia’s heart warm.
Young Amelia, however didn’t look all that happy. To say
Amelia’s childhood was everything a kid could ask for, all the
happy memories, you name it. From the time she played on the
streets with her friends, riding her first cycle, to her first
knee scrap from the fall, her family gathering, her being
pampered with love and affection, first love, first kiss, first
heartbreak, having besties for life.
Everything worth remembering, everything normal, and that is how
she wanted to remember her childhood and that is how she did.
Hoping to be someone great one day, riding away from this mess,
make her mom proud. Make sure never repeat the mistakes of her
parents. But life wasn’t all that for her.
She hid those memories for a long time now, and all she wants to
do is… let go…
She sees young Amelia leans against a wall. Nobody at home, she
is all by herself, looking worried, and a little more broken.
She had a sharp blade in her hand. It all came back to Amelia.
She never really got what she asked for in her life, and this
time it was a crush.
A guy who might never be interested in her, and she knew that.
She knew she was better than that, but she never knew why she
wanted to hurt herself. As the sharp blade rubbed against her
wrist, the blood poured, it wasn’t a deep cut.
She didn’t want any damage, she just thought that the physical
damage may ease the bombardment inside. And for some reason it
did. Her mind focused on fixing the external damage while she
learnt how to smile again.
As her school ended, she managed to focus her mind in different
activities, such as reading, writing, and mostly hoping to take
off soon. And soon she started her new life, a good, content
life.
Things at home were pretty calm, the worst times were when
everything went normal again.
As if all the bitterness was caged and thrown into the deep
forest. Her parents behaved like nothing ever went wrong, it
felt like a family without a scar. Of course, a dirty and well
scripted prank by Life to teach them how helpless they were.
One fine day, the cage goes wide open and the bitterness
roaring, bouncing back to life and destroying everything that
ever mattered. And you just have to sit there and watch it all
burn down.
And these are the things you should try and avoid thinking and
Amelia did just that. Although it had changed her, every stage
of her stage made her realize that she was alone. And the burden
just won’t unload.
Her feelings never stable, and the ability to believe things can
go right, was erased from her head. She always felt bad that
things were right around the corner.
And everyone was just as puzzled. It was easier for her to let
go, because she was scared to hold on. What if, this is also a
prank? She was tired of fooling others, fooling herself.
Not even having a good hold on her present, and no shoulder to
cry on, she moved away from everybody, and it didn’t happen all
of a sudden.
Now she was outside the city, inside a room, lying on her own
pool of blood. The pain she thought might calm her interiors
were beginning to burn her very heart and soul. Her wrist felt
lifeless, or maybe her whole body did. She had no right to make
this call.
Faces of her family came flashing in front of her eyes. Her
heart ready to give up and end the pain for once and for all.
But the thoughts of people she was leaving behind was more
painful and she was scared that it will keep her restless even
after her last breath.
But why is it after all this year? After this long struggle, why
give up now?
