Come Watch Me Make Space Marine Armour!
DIR By: Invictus
Date: September 14, 2012, 11:38 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Hey guys. I'm putting this here because, you know, you guys are
all purveyors of fine games and suchlike gaming interests. I'm
ALSO putting this here because the 405th Costuming Community got
taken down for being 'an attack site', which is ridiculous, but
there you go.
First, some backstory: about a year and a half to two years ago,
I had an amazing idea: I SHOULD TOTALLY GO TO SUPANOVA (which is
pretty much an Australian ComiCon(?)) AS A GODDAMN SPACE MARINE.
A friend showed me a technique called Pepakura, out of which
some REALLY amazing costumes have been made, and I started on my
journey. Unfortunately for my journey, I'm lazy as hell, so I'd
do one week's work on the armour and then not look at it for
three to four months. I've missed two Supanovas' worth of
chance, and the next one is in Brisbane (about an hour's train
ride from where I live), in early-to-mid November. Since I'm a
procrastinator, I've put finishing the armour off until two
months to go, so as such, I'm now working feverishly to get it
done, also trying to finish my TAFE assignments and keep a
semblance of a social life going.
I'm going to make this, basically, a picture diary of how I've
been going. Of course, I'd love your input, readers. Even if you
know nothing about any of what I'm doing, sometimes getting an
outside view might fix a problem or two I've been having. If you
guys DO know anything about what I'm doing, then I'd love your
input all the more.
This will be rather pic-heavy, so if you're on
wireless/satellite, or god-help-you Dial-Up, these pages might
take a while to load.
Thanks for reading this, guys. I hope my wonderful little
project inspires you guys to do cool stuff as well.
Because really, let's face it, there's nothing cooler than a
five-man tactical squad walking around ComiCon.
tl;dr, I'm making Space Marine armour and I want you people to
watch and chip in and keep me motivated!
Note: I have no idea how many images I'm allowed to add per
post, so I guess I'll post about 10-15 per post and see what
happens.

Ok, so, Photobucket is being a dick and my internet is chucking
five kinds of fuck-up, so I'm not entirely sure how well this
will work. So far, I've got 133 photos on my Photobucket album,
so that should be enough until the wonderful people get around
to fixing it. Ugh. Anyway, in varying chronological order..

HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/RightPauldron2.jpg[/img]
The first thing I ever made - the shoulder pauldrons. I don't
know why they're so ridiculously oversized. Probably because the
Space Marine command structure is based upon how big your
pauldrons are.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/BolterDisassembled.jpg[/img]
The Bolter, the second thing I ever made, disassembled at
labelled. I'm thinking about scrapping this, it came out really
badly.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/FinishedBolter4.jpg[/img]
...Not that you can really tell from this picture, where it
looks pretty alright.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000129.jpg[/img]
A shin, that I ended up scrapping.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000133.jpg[/img]
I have no idea when this was taken, but it must've been pretty
early on. Two shoulders resin'd, a bolter, and a bad shin guard.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000135.jpg[/img]
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000136.jpg[/img]
Shoulder pauldron resin'd and stuff. These actually came out
really well...
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000140.jpg[/img]
The first, oversized arm I made...
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000142.jpg[/img]
And the second, more normal-sized arm I made. I still ended up
scrapping this due to it deforming after I resin'd it.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000163.jpg[/img]
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000165.jpg[/img]
A combat knife I made that I plan to attach to a pauldron, a la
Emile from Halo: Reach. Still in production - I have more
important things to finish.
Cont. next post...

The hilariously oversized Bolt Pistol I made. If I do end up
keeping this, it will only be as a display piece - it's way too
big to take to Supanova.

were the difficult parts, the other two being the chest and the
backpack.

RANDOM THIGH GUARD, that actually fits really well.

HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000353.jpg[/img]
Two pauldrons, both finally completed to my happiness. Next up
was the painting...
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000359.jpg[/img]
First goes the primer...
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000364.jpg[/img]
Next goes an aluminium silver over the top of that. There's a
method to my madness, you'll see..
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000365.jpg[/img]
Then we put Vaseline at various points on the shoulder - usually
where I was too lazy to fill in chips or holes, then spray green
over the top.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000367.jpg[/img]
Then cover the trim in newspaper and spray the main part
black...
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000368.jpg[/img]
Then finally remove the paper and wipe away the Vaseline to
complete your chipped-and-scratched battle-worn wargear!
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000370.jpg[/img]
Et viola, I'm a Space Marine!
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000374.jpg[/img]
Two thighs, both getting fibreglassed.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000376.jpg[/img]
The helmet getting fibreglassed. This...was not fun.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000379.jpg[/img]
Holding a lens in place to see what it would look like. I've
changed the plan since then.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000380.jpg[/img]
Chest piece getting fibreglassed.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000382.jpg[/img]
Helmet finally fully fibreglassed.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000383.jpg[/img]
At this point, I finally bought a respirator, since resin fumes
are actually HIGHLY toxic and I had been breathing them in this
whole time.
HTML http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/h394/Sanc7us/WP_000384.jpg[/img]
My friend, Kate, who I roped in to do the detail work on my
armour since she's the best artist I know.

Front and back of the thigh.
That's all for now, guys. Since that last photo, I've finished
the helmet, including painting, as well as the thigh guard. I
also put flyscreen-type mesh on the mouth and eyes so I can see
out, but people can't see it. Once I get padding, it will be
done 100%. It will be a stretch to get this done in two months
(well, one and a half now. Eep), but I think it might just be
possible if I knuckle down and put in a few solid days of work.
I'll keep you guys updated.
Much love, Adam
