       Grand Mastery vs Spell Mastery
By: Zaud Date: March 24, 2015, 7:33 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Can someone who understands both of these compare/contrast them
for me. If possible put in CP commitments that may not be
obvious from just reading the skill descriptions. When I read
the rules I had no idea that they were supposed to be
accomplishing the same thing for spell casters vs non spell
       casters.

Well, Grand Master for a warrior is 30 Cp. What Grand Master
gets you is access to use any weapon whether it a great sword,
at crossbow or a Ballista and everything in between. Grandmaster
also gives you the perk of using makeshift weapons, such as a
table leg, a rock or even another mans arm. You are so
proficient with weapons that they just come natural to you. In
order to get this you have to learn how to use them through the
use of the skill instruction. So someone can teach you to use
long hammer, pike, bow and things like that for what their Cp
cost would be, and once you have 30 cp dedicated to weapon
skills, you can find someone who will teach you the skill
grandmaster. Grand master gives you proficiency in all weapons
however not the skill plus in them. You can invest in a grand
master skill plus and receive the appropriate damage modifier.
Now magic mastery is a bit different. It works the same way as
grand master up to 30 cp, where you collect paths of magic until
you manage to get 30 Cp invested into specifically paths of
magic. Once you have gotten the 30 Cp requirement you can find a
teacher for Magic mastery. This allows you to learn multiple
High-magics as well as learn paths of magic for 0 Cp. The
limiters placed on the High-magic are that in order to get a
High-magic you must have 3/5 of the spells from each of the
corresponding paths and find someone willing to teach you. Now,
while you can learn Paths of Magic for 0 CP with magic mastery,
you still must find a teacher and you must find a teacher for
       spells from that path.
I hope this helps explain it.

So Spell Master earns the Spell Caster increased versatility for
the remainder of the character's life expectancy even though
CP's will come slower and slower.
A Grand Master can use any weapon at 'base' damage.
The Mage can hand pick effects to target specific weakness and
increased utility as cooler spells are added to the game and the
Warrior can hit someone with a pencil for damage? Now, I suppose
being able to Execute someone with a pencil is neat, but it is
not quite the same as being able to have multiple kinds of death
spells/utility spells. A warrior can only have one weapon in
hand at a time, (well, one for each hand).
It took me some time to get used to the idea, but the 'swapping
spells' that goes on does aid the social aspects of the game and
creates an economy based on spell slinging.
I'm just saying that Mages have a much better time of it, and
getting a free casting of 'every' Shield spell they have is
multiplying the effectiveness of their CP expenditures in ways
       Warriors can not.

Grand Master also allows the character to get all styles and
"forms" (don't really have a name) as zero cost. That means
style mastery, blind fighting, underwater combat, one-handed
block, one-handed damage, and two-handed damage are all free.
And the character can buy grandmaster skill pluses, which are
the most efficient way to get stamina (if you're just looking at
       skill plus costs).

I don't know of any characters in-game using one-handed block,
       one-handed damage, or two-handed damage, I haven't seen anyone
need underwater combat in years either.

I know of a few who do have them. But you are right, I have yet
to see anyone have, or need underwater combat. But one day it
       will come in handy.

The turtle drake in the arena, man. Underwater combat would
       have been great for that.

Geography is not much a part of the game currently, we do not
have a local map, nor can we 'adventure' in areas beyond
'farmland', 'forest' or 'city'. Random exploration means
'random' need for skills with the Arena being one exception to
the rule as people know what they are facing before entering.

There has recently been an increase of encounters on the river.
I think we could expect a use for underwater combat soon.
