shape shifting as a school of magic

Hey I had this idea for a school of magic based on shape
shifting. I think it would be cool to transform into different
kinds of animals to help with different situations and when you
shift into these animals you would gain their abilities for some
time. Some animals I was thinking of include bears, wolves,
lions, eagles, and etc. I would like some feed back on this idea
:D

I could see the use in something similar to this. But instead
of a new path, which I think would be a bit excessive, there
could be some spells added to Path of Nature.
For example:
Keen Sense 1 hour 3 Mana
By the forces of Nature, I give you Keen <Sense>.
This spell allows the target to gain the effects of a single
keen sense for 1 hour. The target will show animal traits that
correspond with the scent they have been granted. Cat eyes for
Keen Sight, wolf ears for Keen Hearing, bear snout for Keen
Taste, rat nose for Keen Scent, and catfish whiskers for Keen
Touch. The target can be granted multiple Keen Senses with
repeated castings of this spell.

Yeah, i cant see it becoming a path of magic, but I could see a
spell to give some animal traits for a period of time. I think
Zach is pretty spot on with the spell he wrote up.

The spell looks good except instead of catfish whiskers, it
should just be raccoon powers...

Meh, I think we have a whole lot of paths in the game as it is
already. While a Shapeshifting path would be pretty cool we
already have natural shifters as a race, monks who can
shapeshift, and as a druid only skill we could always just port
over Wild Shape. The path is cool but I don't see the need for
adding another path especially something that is already covered
by the game material in several ways.

I agree with Whitepaw. The fact that Paths become free for mages
after some initial investment adds to the fact that extra
versatility with no cost is a long term issue.
I think we are close to having the first person at this stage
and the game has not been going even a year.

The problem is not that it lets mages have another free path
after Magic Mastery. Its just that the path isn't really
necessary. The argument about free skills could be used for
Grand Masters also.

Yeah, Zach has a point. I mean Grandmaster and Magic mastery are
two goals that can be worked toward, but are mainly mid term
goals if someone wanted them. While it only costs Cp, you have
to find instructors for each path/weapon skill and then the
skills themselves. But as I said before, having this a a path of
magic is not really a good fit right now since there are other
ways to obtain something similar. We would also have to work 3
other paths up since we use families of magic.

Except that Grandmaster doesn't potentially let you fly, swim,
burrow, breath underwater, throw webs, or whatever else people
could come up with for abilities to gain from shapeshifting
spells.
