Critical Strikes

Critical Strikes: Why is the ‘punch’ the most efficient way to
rattle them off? In battle it is harder to setup a small weapon
to hit something in a vulnerable spot then a longer weapon so
the ‘reduced cost’ for small weapons is questionable. Add to
this that small weapons can be auto fired in addition to the
Critical Strike being called as you swing and I believe this
adds up to glitch in the system.

It's hitting a chink in someone's armor or finding a small weak
spot. The ability to machine-gun doesn't make up for the low
damage on small weapons, and larger weapons already have
advantages associated with them. Also small weapons have
negatives on the chart as well that help balance them.

As well, it actually does make sense for it to be easier for
small weapons to get easier critical strikes. They're light,
easily maneuverable, and slip easily into the "gaps between
armor" to hit a vital spot. Historically, even, there's been
specific daggers made in order to get to those spots. The
smaller the weapon, the harder to block.

Basically what Rachel said. Small weapons require the user to
be closer to their target which makes it much easier to
successfully hit the "weak" spot in someone's defense. A
critical strike is not a super powerful attack. It is a well
placed one.

I was fencer, so I can understand the idea that 'well placed'
blows have a place, but there is a reason 'why' big swords exist
when it comes to dealing with armor. In most cases a 'poke' to
someone wearing armor, even though the 'joints' will not kill
someone outright, because the armor is designed to make that
difficult. Yes, you will cause them to bleed, but a 'slow death'
does not prevent the person you wounded from doing grievous harm
to you.
From a 'sneak attack' standpoint you are both correct. Small
weapons/unseen weapons allow you to close with your target so
that you can attack them before they can react: I would contend
that it is the 'sneaky' part of the attack that is giving the
person the extra damage.
As far as 'true combat' goes, people tended to always pick
bigger weapons when it came to combat, they use 'knives' only as
a last resort as they would rarely get in close enough to hurt
someone who is armed with a longer sword.
From a fantasy standpoint, yes knives are all over the place,
but historically... 'bigger weapon=better weapon' when it comes
to actual combat. It is part of Arms race that has been going on
since people picked up their first Rock to club someone over the
head with.
As far as 'making up for the damage' on small weapons... That is
like saying we need to make low level spells more powerful to
make up for the usefulness of high level spells.

From the standpoint of 'Game Play':
On a few occasions since I have started playing this game I have
seen people who use brawling 'crowd' other people, it is part of
the style. Close in is where they have a big advantage, this is
also the position where injury can most often happen.
Injury can be from them forcing someone back into bad terrain,
though this is a factor with any style so not as important, just
worth mentioning.
A few of the worse injuries I have seen in LARP have been people
with Shields swinging around to protect themselves from a back
attack. The nature of 'being fast' means the shield will have a
fair bit of kinetic force behind it. Your shields do not have
solid cores, so this is may be less of an issue, but when people
are looking at 'Safety' in a combat situation, this is a big
deal.

Last way of thinking:
Go to a Dojo in the area and discuss the matter with 'punches'
vs weapons in a fight. If they tell you that punches are better
then using a knife or bigger weapon in a fight. Ask them how
many years they needed to train in order for that to be the
case. Then decide on how many CP investment it should be to make
a brawler better then a sword user.

In what way is a brawler better than a sword user?

The only thing I can really see this needing would be a new
section for stamina costs for brawling, and maybe a small nerf
to the costs. And i don't think that brawling is better than
swords, in any way really other than some stamina costs. Swords
have the higher base damage, and longer reach. If you put the
best brawler in game vs someone who is mediocre with a sword and
shield im sure it would still be a close fight. Each weapon
style has its on strengths, obviously you would not take a bow
to a knight fight, and brawlers would stay away from mages.
