Incantations

Incantations: I could not find in the rule book where you ‘must’
incant before throwing and from what I’ve seen it is common for
people to incant while they throw. Is this a problem? As long as
we are all using the same rules it doesn’t really matter how the
problem is addressed.
Incantations for ‘weapon’ based spells also is a bit tricky
though this is something very new to me so I have to lump it
into the ‘Incants for Critical’ strikes.
Incants for Critical Strike: These are also often called while a
strike is in mid swing. Does this mean Critical Strikes for
thrown weapons can also occur while the missile is in the air
instead of prior to release? Swing of sword is pretty much the
same as the flight of the arrow.

Spells are supposed to be incanted before thrown. As is
critical strike. In westmark (as i am not sure the rule carried
over) deflect can be called within three seconds of being hit

The rule for calling defenses is in the Defenses subsection of
the Combat section of the book on page 54. You do still have 3
seconds to call a defense whether it's a shield spell, a special
defense, or a resist. Rocket Jon is correct in that all
incantations including spells, special attacks, magical and
natural effects, faith effects, and alchemies are supposed to be
finished before the packet is thrown or the attack is launched.
In actual play this is sometimes hard to do so if you feel
someone is being too late with their incants you should remind
them to finish their incant before using whatever it is they are
trying to do. If it is a repeated problem then plot should be
notified so a discussion can be had with the problem player.
Deliberately calling incantations late or releasing packets or
attacks early is cheating and will be handled as such.

Yes, a packet or ranged attack must have their "incant" finished
before the spell/attack is delivered. Honestly, I'm not picky
about it too much because the player being attacked should be
trying to dodge it anyway. As long as the packet or weapon
haven't left your hand before you've finished, I don't really
care. For melee attacks its a bit harder to regulate. It would
make combat clunky and stupid looking if people had to stop
their swings to call attacks and then deliver it. This is a
LARP, not a turn based RPG.

Spell Casting with weapons:
Do weapons need to be 'marked' to be used for spells. I know
they have to have a hidden symbol appropriate to the magic
somewhere, but shouldn't it also ''glow" just like mages hand
glow?
How should this be marked, making all 'magic' weapons White is
how some games do it. It also tells monsters what weapons are
worth 'taking'.
Getting good habits with Incants is a big deal for any LARP.

Weapons with foci are not magical. They have the ability to
channel magic. So, you could maybe argue that the foci would
glow when a spell is cast through it, but otherwise it is still
just the character's hands that are glowing. Players need to
have foci drawn on their weapons if they have them. Its a
little different for NPCs.
