Upping the cost of Magic Mastery
By: whitepaws Date: April 19, 2015, 11:09 pm

Since there seems to be a proliferation of paths of magic in the
game and some new paths that weren't in the original source
material the game was built off of. Because of this the price
for Magic Mastery should go up with the amount of paths or as
more paths are added. I'm not sure how many more paths are in
the game or are going to be added to the game so I'm not sure
about how much it should go up by but I wanted to put this out
here so some discussion could be started on it.

A valid point though tricky to have to 'up' the cost on a skill
every year due to people creating new spells.
If all of the Master skills have 'freebies' added at a similar
rate it should not be a big deal, though their seems to be a
finite number of combat skills and it is harder to research new
ones from what I can see. If this is the case, reducing the
costs on the other 'Master' level skills is a viable option or
taking the increase in number of paths/spells into account when
balancing the others.

One good? thing about this game is that new paths of magic
aren't easily put into game since there needs to be a family
created instead of just the one path. So, an increasing cost
every year isn't such an issue. I do think that magic mastery
could use a bump, my suggestion would be to move it to 35. Not a
huge deal but hopefully enough to make players think about if
they want the mana or the mastery.

While I do feel that Magic Mastery is more powerful than the
other skills, one must remember that not all paths can be
attained without possibly spending years of research and time.
Path of Beer for example will most likely never make it into the
hands of a PC.

I would be fine with Magic mastery going up to 34. Want to keep
it a nice even number so Cp is not wasted to obtain it. As
togapika stated, not all paths are easily obtainable. The paths
Luna, Helios, Arcane and Mind are pretty much exclusive to
Certain parts of the world or contained to Orders.

I always hate referencing the games we're based off of for logic
in this game but there are an additional four paths over our
source material so cost should be increased to reflect that.
There were paths in that game that were difficult to get a hold
of but that didn't justify dropping the cost of Magic Mastery.
Honestly, I think an increase of 10-12 CP would be pretty fair
especially with the possibility for more paths being introduced
(and I'd have to strongly advocate that we should limit it to at
most one extra family of magic created by players with
preference towards switching less interesting paths out of
existing families if desired).

For the "player paths" that you are talking about. I think that
should be a next errata thing, so that players have a chance to
create a path and put it to a vote.

It seems an alternative to this would be for Magic Mastery to
just not help in covering the cost of particularly exotic or
unusual paths. Maybe include an advanced magic mastery for those
who want to have a one cost covers everything for the expanded
set of paths. Setting the bar higher for entry just makes the
process more difficult for newer characters, after all.

Something like not having it affect italicized paths?

One way to do it that would work, sure. The point value could be
reevaluated based on how many paths there are after cutting
those out, and then a second version could exist that has magic
mastery with the prereq, but also requires you to know such and
such number of italicized paths to get. Exotic Magic Mastery
maybe.
