Except that the cost to foci it would increase the book to at
least 4 gold just to have the jeweler break even on the foci. It
could be an added feature though.

Im the highest level mage in game and I dropped 13 gold on
scrolls last game. The fact that I can substitute scrolls for
mana is amazing. Scroll making is not obsolete in the least in
my opinion. If you have a pool of 50 mana, its pretty important
to ration it out, but scrolls give you a bit more freedom. I
like them enough I have a second set on order.

Scrolls are amazing and I honestly don't know why no one has
been working towards getting it as much as possible. But that's
       just my thought.

One way to slow spell progression would be to limit the number
of skills/spells to 1 per month. I'm not sure it is a good way
to go, but it is one possibility.

I as a mage am ok to give it a shot. And here's how we could
       implement it.
Spell book: every mage gets one starting out at first lvl with
all there spells. All the mages that are currently in game get
one with all there spells in it. Any future spells learned must
have the price payed and a day per level to copy the spell. Once
the spell is in the book you can learn it at a day per level. If
the spell book is lost or stolen you still retain your spells
but need the book to transfer spells. Druids get around this
with their Hippy friends, and they arent likely to share their
       spells with non druids anyway.
This is still faster than research and it slows down the
trading of spells. If its not a popular method we can always
change it. I Think its worth a shot to try.

As someone who doesn't make much money in game I don't like
this. I woud have to either dig into my xp (which I don't like
doing for role play reasons) or constantly have someone pay for
my things for me. With spell trading you can offer other spells
or services, but not with this. It also makes read & write a
necessary skill for mages. Sure, many get it but it hasn't been
       required.
