Re: Airsoft... Sport or Hobbie?

Hobby as it runs on an honour system mainly and there is no
official body of "rules" per se. For it to become a recognised
sport things would have to be standardised such as equipment,
ammo limits, hit recognition, referee's etc etc - I think that
would take a lot of the fun out of it personally.
Also the title - why does it say hobbie?

Personally, I would say hobby as I love guns and bullets haha.
You can't really shoot guns and say its a sport, unless your
open minded or just don't know the difference. ::)

OK...
When performing the act of participating at Airsoft you;
a. Have to follow code of conduct (like a sport / not a hobby)
b. When playing, you have to follow rules (like a sport)
c. It's played in an arena with boundaries (like a sport)
d. Physical exertion is mandatory to traverse and participate
(like a sport)
e. Objections (goals) are set as objectives to create an air of
competition (like a sport)
f. The objectives results in either a winner, loser, draw. (like
a sport)
Hobbies;
a. Code of conducts generally don't apply.
b. No rules generally apply to a hobby, as in timelines,
boundries, limitations.
c. Most objectives are personal goals.
There are many examples of activities that cross boundries from
being a hobby into a sport. Just because a governing board
doesn't recognise an activity as a "sport" doesn't mean it
isn't.
If life saving can be in the olympic games, and defined as a
sport, so can airsoft! It's just as important to save lives as
to defend, and fight. Slightly off topic here but the principal
remains the same.

This is going to sound nerdy.. But warhammer games are hobbys
and they have rules and regualtions when it comes to playing
them? It may not be the same as airsoft but surely airsoft could
be a bit of both?

Also, a sport usually takes up all of your time training, and
practising alot of your life. Airsoft doesnt consist of this
really.

Because of the restrictions with some sports, you can't always
practice as much as you would like. If your keen then you'll
always find a way. Hence like professionals do in their choosen
sport, travel to venues around the country / world to compete.
The principal game dynamics around playing warhammer is the same
as chess? Chess is a sport, why can't warhammer also be??
- Opposing teams of figurines with defined moves, and value.
- Object, to win, within a defined arena, rules etc.
The main difference between alot of interests, is those involved
turning it into a recognised sport, with a governing body,
international status, agreed rules and regulations. Airsoft is
an infant, and may never become a recognised sport, but that
doesn't mean it doesn't use all the values utilised to define
what a sport is..

Quote: "Airsoft is a sport in which participants shoot round
non-metallic pellets launched via replica firearms."
Must be true it's in Wikipedia!

I believe everyone has a right to call it based upon their
perspective, a sport to one person, a hobby to another, etc.etc.
My perspective was considering the elements that make up the
activity of doing Airsoft. From reading the definitions that
classify airsoft it sits closer to sport than hobby. If it was
the otehr way around I'd say hobby. You can also argue that
until it becomes recognised (define recognised) it remains a
past time versus sport. etc.etc.etc.

I agree with you all, But in my opinion i see it as an
Activity/Hobby. I see running, Kayaking etc a sport. Either way
as long as we love it does it matter.
