I really should think before I post, especially on airdefop!! I
should have known better. How do I increase the size of this
photograph. There!

I was posted in to 114 MCRU Butterworth in May 1966 and worked
with the C Convoy until August '66 once Western Hill was up and
running ok to be fully manned by the boys from Butterworth. Must
say I preferred to be living at Butterworth as compared to
Minden Barracks which we shared with the Gurkas.
Being used to having cups to drink our teas and coffees from we
had a running battle with the Catering WO (Army) over our use of
two glasses one in side the other from which to enjoy drinking
our hot drinks from. We had not been issued with mugs which we
were expected to purchase privately.
Chankat I have fond memories of. The early morning scenery was
magic and the sound of the train hooting its way through the
jungle was quite a sound.
I followed people like John Anderson up to Kai Tak and 117 SU
(Tai Mo Shan) in October '66 where I remained until returning to
UK in November 1968.
There were so many ex-Neatishead personnel stationed at Changi,
Bukit Gombak, Malacca Straights, Butterworth, Western Hill and
Kai Tak I was for ever bumping into old friends. My fondest
memory of Butterworth was selection as 10th man to fly in a
Shackleton doing an ASR task for two missing RRAF and one RAF
chap who had pinched a boat that capsized. 7 1/2 hour flight
before flying down to Changi and eventual return to 114 MCRU by
Hastings.

Hugh, great reading your memories of the Far East and I feel
sure I must know you as my time at 114 MCRU/Chankat/C Convoy and
Western Hill/Minden Barracks coincide with the dates you were
there. You also mentioned my old pal Jon Anderson who you
followed up to Hong Kong, I am still in contact with him and was
best-man at his wedding.
