       RAF POLING

       Thought I might tell you about the outstanding memory of RAF
       Poling ,near Arrundel in Sussex.
       I was detached there for a Type 7 (Gee) course. The camp was the
       Living site for those who worked at RAF Truliegh Hill.
       The story was that the owner of the land (Duke of  Bedford ? )
       allowed the RAF to build a station on his land with the proviso
       that not one tree was to be cut down for any reason.This was
       really hard as the land was almost a forest.
       When I first went into the NAAFI hut I sat waiting for it to
       open.When the counter shutters went up I was gobsmacked to see
       this huge tree growing behind the bar.The tree went straight up
       through the roof,and the staff just had to dodge around it to
       serve.(how they made the hut waterproof I never found
       out.Needless to say the bottom part of the tree was painted
       white._

       Dou... keep passing on your memories.... about the only thing
       that has NOT changed is, I suspect, the RAFs fascination with
       painting things white.   Lovely story
