Well here goes!! please remember that this was more than sixty
five years ago and as we all know time can do funny things to
the memory.
I was detached in 1948 to R.A.F. Ringstead near Worthing for the
annual Air Defence exercise .
Ringstead was a CH Station and the 360 Foot transmitter towers
/240 Foot Receiver towers could be very easily seen form the
main street of Worthing.
A quick reminder about the receiver towers.They consisted of
Brass dipoles strung up on the towers.The receiving dipoles were
a length of copper tubing cut to point 47 of the wavelength and
the reflectors were point 49 of the wave length. The reflectors
cwere placed point 5 of the wavelength behind the dipoles so
that the wave travelled exactly one wave length and was in phase
with the other waves on the dipole. All this I learnt courtesy
of my initial Radar Op. Couirse in Yatesbury 1947.
In The receiver block at bRingstead one sat at a console with a
very small CRT as compared withe PPI tubes. and fixed to the
console desk was a ball about two thirds the size of a crystal
ball.This ball -upon one seeing a signal on the tube was turned
manually clockwis or anticlockwise by the operator until the
maximum signal was received.Then one either pressed a button or
switched a switch to activate the reflectors this mde the
siglal bright if in front of the station or duller if behind.
Somehow this info was passed to the computer.
The computer was situated in a room adjacent to the console room
and consisted of a vast (and I do man vast) array of equipment
a number of banks deep which reached from wall to wall and
floor to ceiling .
All this large amount of equipment did,after much whirring was
to calculate the bearing and range of the signal.
From this action could be taken to intercept or not.
Britain won the war !!

Anymore Doug?, I like reading about your time in the RAF,
especially to see how things had changed by the time I signed
on.
