My biggest mistake.

Upon my return from my second tour of the Far East I was posted
to Compton Bassett to train Radar.Ops., and then to
A.D.O.C.Stanmore Park.
My job at ADOC was as an SNCO in charge of the Intelligence
Section i was in charge of four other SNCO,s who were on shift
work whilst I was on days. MY immediate boss was an arrogant
Sqn.Ldr.who once accused me of walking out of the office every
time he entered,I didn't think it was so obvious-but it must
have been.If I told you what i did in the Intelligence Section I
would have to kill you<(Not that I can remember much, except a
direct order that anything I saw, read,or heard in the office was
not to be disclosed to anyone not even the Group Captain C.O.
was to be informed.
About this time I read and A.M.O.or R.O.M. which stated that the
Air Ministry was looking to change the standard of education and
intelligence in the Raf ADMIN/GD trade group and were looking
for people who would remuster. I was fed up of working
underground and only seeing the sunlight at weekends, and
remembering two orders written on a blackboard by a Sgt
GD/Discip.at Compton Bassett,which read:=
If it raining on the morning of the C.O.'s inspection all
bedside mats must be cleaned the night before. and
On the morning of the C.O.'s inspection all windows must be open
on an angle of 25 percent.
Thinking about all this I decided to apply for remustering from
ADO1 to RAF Admin 1 and was accepted.
Consequently I spent the next 8 years bored out of my skull from
wet nursing and square bashing apprentices, kiliing
mosquitoes,and running guardrooms.
in 11970 I waived my option for a discharge with a view to a
pension, and then made the best move of my life:- I emigrated to
Australia.
One might say that i am now waiting for my final posting and
whether it is up or down i don't care because all postings are
an experience.
Doug.
