My Weirdest posting-R.A.F. Gibbet Hill/Hindhead.

Hi:- I have told you about my worst posting (Tai Mo Shan Hong
Kong) and my best (Trerew) now for the final one my weirdest.
I was posted to Raf Gibbet Hill/ Hindhead from Trerew. where
the living accommodation was a few Nissen Huts located in the
backyard of the pub on the corner iof the main street of
Hazlemere Surrey.To get to the Admin site (Hindhead) one had to
walk up the main street of Hazlemere past all the shops etc. One
place being the Queern of Hearts Cafe' which was used by the
lads like a NAAFI. The Tech site was further on in the devils
Punch Bowl.
The stations was absolutely soulless as most of the lads had
cars or lived nearby so when off watch they disappeared .
The morning of arrival I was in the Orderly room to collect my
arrival form when I was ordered by a W.O. to march in to the
C.O. two RAF Polcemen who were charging each other for something
petty. After this I was told off by the C.O for wearing my Cpl's
Chevrons on one arm only. Then I was told upon being given my
arrival card that I would habve to clear in two days as I was
posted overseas.meanwhile I was to go on Watch that night.
The watch that night was a really laugh. whilst on watch it was
forbidden to sleep and blankets etc were not to be taken on
duty, The lads going on watch use to tie blankets around their
waist under their greatcoats.and it was weird to see these lads
waddle up the hazlemere high street all with huge waist lines.
wHILST on duty (Night Watch) the door to the ops. block was
locked and no airman would go out at night time because of the
stories about the ghosts of the thieves who were hanged on the
Gibbet only a few yard from the block.

On 6 May 1945, a Curtiss-Wright C-46 Commando (44-77839) of the
United States Army Air Forces was flying over Gibbet Hill in bad
weather, when the aircraft struck one of the two Gee radar
towers (actually the one on Hindhead Common) and
crashed;[citation needed] all 30 passengers and crew died along
with one person on the ground.[9] The second tower, on Gibbet
Hill was demolished in the 1950s.[citation needed]
