RAF Patrington

I'm sure there was a thread on Patrington on the old site and am
suprised that it has not been brought up again. It was my first
'proper' unit in 1966 and I have many happy memories of my time
there.
Good times in the Spread Eagle,The Commercial, that fleapit of a
dance hall, the Horizon Club. Catching the last bus back from
Hull (if you were lucky) and getting it to stop so you could
have a pee en route. Grabbing a steak and chips from the mess
after catching the late shift bus back from Withernsea (remember
old Wilf the kitchen hand? Didn't he have two daughters???).
On a call out early one morning Dutch Beckman was assigned the
Northern Hemisphere screen in the MA Room (probably because he
was inebriated and the manning corporal thought he couldn't do
much harm behind there). Wrong. After a while Dutch stood up and
leant against the screen, chinagraph poised in his hand and
slowly sank to to the floor marking a red chinagraph line from
top to bottom. This unfortunately caught the eye of 'Tiger'
Shaw. The rest was history!
One night at the Horizon Club disco some local lads managed to
get in and start a scrap which boiled out into road outside. The
Officers Mess were having a dining in night and I recall Tiger
and several other officers staggering out in their mess kite
encouraging our lads to beat the s*** out of the locals. Which
we did!

I had a weeks detachment fro North Coates in 1968, when annual
servicing was taking place. There was about ten of us in all.
Quite a caper. First a bus journey in to Grimsby where we had to
wait for a ferry across the Humber. Not a very big ferry but it
got us across the river and into Hull. Someone in admin had not
booked any transport from the terminal to RAF Patrington so we
had to rely on one of our party to get us transport. Away he
went and we waited and waited. Eventually this old lorry turned
up, driven by our George ?, the colleague. He opened the back
door and we all went to scramble in, only to find it was full of
hay and straw, and other things I do not care to mention. Oh we
were so glad to arrive at the admin site and get off the bloody
lorry. George disappeared to park the lorry, saying he would not
be staying on camp but at home on his dads pig farm. The duty
JNCO showed us where we would be sleeping and where the
cookhouse was. All this before lunch. After lunch a small bus
took us to the site (I think). Never having been on a fully
working RADAR site before it was all new to all of us. And very
impressive. The next four days were spent with the ops training
section who explained everyting to us, in a very short time,
between coffee breaks. We enjoyed the NAAFI and the company,
female type, that it provided. There were no WRAF's at North
Coates. But Friday came around and we had to make our way back
to Hll fro the ferry across the Humber again. George insisted on
using the old lorry again but this time we had the company of a
few lady friends that we had made the acquaintance of. Must say,
one of the most enjoyable lorry trips I have ever undertaken.
Just wish I could remember her name. What was in it for her I
hear you ask.... The answer... Hay. Transport picked us up from
the terminal at Grimsby and so our detachment was over. Oh happy
days. TB

I can't believe that nobody got "wrecked" after visiting the
Burns Head - we had lots of gatherings there (not far to walk
back ).

Used to go to the Spread Eagle in Withernsea now and
again,sometimes Curly Mc Ardle took us there speedily in his
car.
The return to camp being faster!!.
Many a good night at the Railway in Pat too,especially demob
parties.

Remember coming back from Witheringsea ( I know thats not how
you spell it!) as a passenger in a car, I think it was a Mini.
We had all had a skinful, the car somehow lost control of itself
and crashed through a large hedge and into someones front
garden. We all did a runner, to this day I cannot recall who
else was in the car or who was driving it. 1965/66 ish.

Could that have been John Walters (spelling?)and an orange mini
van??
