I know what you mean, but the Pass Out Parade was the light at
the end of a long tunnel (for most of us!), and a real target to
aim for. Add to that the pride in ourselves after completing
basic training and showing ourselves off to family who had come
up for the day, and I can quite imagine why people would be
upset to miss it.
Now AOC's on the other hand was a complete pain in the arse!

After Passing Out Parade before going to Compton Bassett, sliding
up and down on the billet lino in our parade boots, and smashing
our pint pots.
What a sad lot we must have been.

Unfortunately RAF Bridgnorth is no longer there. Not sure what
it is now but I suspect it is a large housing estate. I will try
to find out and go see when I visit my son next time. he lives
about 15 minutes away in Telford. TB

I went with my caravan to a site called Stanmore Park just on
the outskirts of Bridgnorth a few years ago. At reception I
asked where the old camp was, it was on opposite side of where
we were staying. They produced a file with pages of comments and
photographs provided by ex Bridgnorth guys.
The camp is mainly overgrown with trees and weeds but dog
walkers are in abundance.
A garden of rememberance has been created with a boiler room
chimney, flags and a plaque remembering all those who served
there.
At the railway station a plaque on the wall remembers all those
who arrived by train to do their training.
Two 1940's weekends are held every year, the last weekend in
June and the first weekend in July. Steam trains travel between
Bridgnorth and Kidderminster, super weekends, worth a visit.
