The Radio caroline boat was moored for years at the head of the
Gare Loch during the late 80's early 90's.

There was also a pirate radio station of the coast of the Isle
of Man in the early 60s where Simon Dee and Tony Blackburn used
to come ashore at Ramsey,Dee used to wear a long black cloak
with a blood red lining, and they used to drink in one of the
harbour bars,Dee also thought he was the gods gift to women.
He tried chatting my sister in law up,until she told him in no
uncertain terms to go away. The guy just couldn't,together the
message until he found himself sitting in a puddle of the pint
he had been drinking.

Interesting comments about cal runs and chaff.
If I remember correctly the cal un sheets were sent off site to
a 'correlation centre' somewhere (poss HQ 11 Gp or later to
HQSTC).
Chaff In exercises where they dropped chaff it was a pain in
the backside, the only thing was that they used to start
dropping inside the ,ax range of the radar, so if we have some
eagle eyes they would pick up the 'enemy' outside of the chaff
and DR it through the mess.... only problem was we relied upon
the 'enemy'
maintaining same course and height (and in the old days they
usually assisted). With the advent of the more modern radars
(84, FPS3 etc) where chaff could be almost eliminated (was the
anti interference device called MTI (moving target indicator??))
the 'enemy started using voice jamming and noise as there major
'toy'. I can recall (when at Staxton) sort of getting pee'd
off and telling he jamming aircraft to f... off and annoy
someone else... got a sort of friendly repremand from Taff
Jenkins (SL Ops at Staxton) regarding correct RT procedures.
Other odd jobs was the surveillance of Concorde in the early
days of its flight trials (dont think Bawdsey was involved)
1967-69?? and the Agressor exercises (also dont think this was
at Bawdsey but Patrington and maybe Boulmer/Neatishead (1965
time frame) - Lofty Weatherell was King pin for this at Pat.

Once again Brian you resurrect all the memories, I can remember
that incident with the Interference at Staxton.
I cannot however remember too much of the 'Chaff' as by far the
most effective Jamming was 'Noise' which would play havoc with
main Search radars. Backup often relient on the type 7. (God
help us!)

Some interesting pictures of the 'hole' taken by someone who
managed to by-pass the security measures:

Buchan hole will no doubt be like that, but at the time Ian
Pluck was up it was not possible to go down the hole. Supposedly
unsafe, would loved to have seen the old place and Highland
Radar that was.

Ricky, thanks for that link.
Surprising that so much of the old place remains.
