Escort reaction

When I played recently I stumbled on the fact that there was no
modifier for escort reaction from behind. I could have sworn
there was one but decided I had just mixed up the Escort
Reaction and tally modifiers.
Now that I bring out the physical copy I discover that I was
right, and two modifiers have gone from Escort reaction.
Fewer modifiers is always good, but I have no memory of any
discussion about removing that modifier. So when did that
happen?

I can’t recall precisely when it happened, but there were two
factors that impinged upon it:
(1) There was a rule query on the modifier that would have
required a new rule section to cover various edge cases. It was
easier, in the end, to ditch the modifier rather than lard it
with new rules.
(2) The rule query led me to a reassessment of the escort role.
When I went back to the wartime descriptions of escort, I
realised that most escort had a lateral component to it that we
don’t represent in the game. Escorts didn’t follow the raid
above and in trail, but mostly covered the flanks, and that
these flank positions gave them a good view of approaches to the
bombers from behind. Overall it seemed better and more realistic
to just ditch the modifier.
