Scenario: O01 Shall we cancel the party?
Version: v0.1
Playtesters: Solo
Report:
A huge fight that resulted in a German blowout mainly because
the bombing scored triple damage to the port and bagged 36VP.
The British had terrible luck in air to air combats. The FLAK
had no effect on things.
There were two or three dogfights caused by the Germans and many
casualties were scored later as the survivors were pursued. The
Hurricanes got caught in a nasty pursuit by the German ace and
ended up losing 8 planes plus a straggler.
The British ace fared ok, and managed some pursuit shots of the
lucky Stukas, but really failed to bring down more than 1 or 2.
Victory:
German bombing:
He-111s 2 + 2 + 2
Ju 87s 9 + 5
Ju 88 2
German bombing: 36 VP
German kills: 18 fighters = 18 VP
British kills: 3 fighters, 2 bombers, 2 Stukas = 9VP
VP's are 54 less 9 = 43 total German blow-out.
Luck: British had dismal dice. Too many non-losses for all the
hits they scored. On the German side, I wouldn't say that they
had phenominal luck with the bombing, but did pretty good. The
drms for dive bombing and the weakness of the port helped a lot.
And the Ju88 only scored 2 damage but those points put damage
over 21 which is triple VP.
Recommendations: Had the British dice brought down some more
bombers and had they been able to break up the Stukas more
effectively, this could have been closer.

For our first game, Ellen and I let the He 111s glide bomb and
the Ju 88s steep-angle bomb. The Heinkels were able to bomb the
stuffing out out the port, 100%, 0%, 10% for Fatal damage. That
led to a wild scenario with the right-side Germans running away
to coast on their big VP lead and the Brits chasing bombers in
pursuit of enough VP to force a Draw. The detailed write-ups are
in process.
Point is, we interpreted special rule 2 to mean no gradual
descent before the start of the bombing profile, not a
restriction against glide or steep-angle attacks. Maybe we
played against the intention of the rule. The Germans' potential
to inflict bomb damage is already rather high. Ellen is running
the stats for how these attacks would look with average rolls,
and we'll have three playtest done soon.

Since running out the clock to protect a lead is OK in
(American) football but would get people shot in the Luftwaffe,
we played out the second part of the blow-out scenario twice,
once with a retreat and once with an attack by the Ju 88s and
Stukas. Both were German wins.
We're not saying the balance is necessarily out of whack, but
the deep well of VPs the Germans can draw from and the position
of the lead He 111 squadron are advantages.

Thanks for that guys! (Kevin, you’re a test machine!) Looking
forward to the AAR, Dave. I’m going to hold off on looking at
changes until I see it.
If the chances of getting 2x or 3x damage on the Port is
significant, then we may have to recalibrate the VPs so that the
Germans have to achieve at least 24 VPs from bombing, and
possibly more.
A lot then depends on the aircraft exchange rates the scenario
generates. From Kevin’s first test the British exchange was -9
VP. However, we are mixing SE and TE bomber types in this
scenario, and so we may have to make the Stukas worth 2 VP each.
If we apply that to Kevin’s play-through that would,
interestingly, have evened out the VP scored.

We had maximum damage on the port in our game too and judged it
fairly likely. Maybe I should type up a report of our first game
rather than wait for Pete...

I'm not going to do anything more on this scenario until next
weekend, so feel free to take your time.
I don't have a problem with bombing maxing out against the port.
However, if the defenders can't really stop it, then that's a
problem. I'd have to think about either making bombing harder,
or thinning out the bombers.
I'd like to review all the feedback before making a call, but
I'm happy to hear any suggestions you guys have on making the
bombing tougher, if you feel it's currently too easy.

I don't think this is a problem in this scenario, because
killing Stukas before they bomb is probably the only way to
prevent heavy or crippling damage to the port. This provides the
British player with a pretty solid in-game decision.
My concern before I played the game was whether or not the
British had forces for a one-two punch, and it turned out that
they had. The British have the choice between hitting the first
wave, the second wave or both, and I think it will be possible
to make sure there is no right answer to that.

Scenario: O01 Shall we cancel the party?
Version: v0.1
Playtesters: Solo
Report:
Interesting second run, the VP's are weighted too far in favor
of the Germans.
Play pretty much followed the same lines although I only
committed one Spitfire to the Heinkels. It's hard to break up
the Stukas before their assault but a lucky disruption on the
leading Stuka helped.
Victory:
German bombing:
He-111s 0 + 5 + 2
Ju 87s 5 + 1
Ju 88 11 performing a Steep Dive attack. This gives the
bomber an overall modified dice roll of +2. I rolled an 8
giving a modified 10 that was 50% of the bomber's 21 damage.
Had I rolled the same as a level bomber at altitude 9, it would
be -2 combined modifier for result of 6. That would be 10% of
21 or 2 pts of damage.
German bombing: 36 VP
German kills: 8 fighters = 8 VP
British kills: 2 fighters, 2 bombers, 5 Stukas = 11.5VP
VP's are 44 less 11.5 = 32.5 another German blowout.
Luck: Fairly even. Ju88 had a nice roll to end the game again.
Recommendations: Restrict the Ju88 to level bombing. In both
games, the success of this final Steep Dive bombing was worth
another 12 VP. If another change is needed, perhaps increase
the VP of Stukas as they are easy prey to surviving squadrons
after they finish their diving attacks. If the Ju88 was a level
attack and the Stukas worth 2VP then this would have been a 15.5
draw.
Or just fix the Victory Conditions. They seem very low.

Thanks for that AAR. I think the victory conditions are almost
certainly going to get overhauled in the next iteration.
Those are good suggestions regarding changes and I'll mull them
during the week while I wait for Elias's AAR to come in.

Thanks Lee. I'm curious what the historical results were on the
port attack and if any bombers were lost to FLAK. In my games
the FLAK didn't get much than one toll for a loss. If there were
more than one historical loss then a second lit FLAK could be a
small booster to Allied chances.
