E06 Aces High

This is a fairly unsubtle and straightforward scenario, but the
Tu2's are cool. Speed 5 and low drag!
Everyone just went to work, the Germans reach the bombers and
the Soviet fighters reach the Germans. The gut feeling this time
round is that the Germans were somewhat lucky. The game ended
after 5 turns. My result was fairly similar to Dave's:
Soviet: Exit 1 fresh, 1 disr, 1 broken: 10, 5 Ger ftrs lost. 15
German: 7 Tu2 shot down. 14
Score 1, German victory.
I'm not sure why Dave is worrying about the gun pods. Bf109
flights with gun pods are speed 4 unless veteran, one less than
the unescorted bombers! The fighters with gun pods didn't have a
noticeably better kill ratio than those without. It is all the
experten in this scenario that takes such a heavy toll on the
Soviet bombers. The veterans also give them more staying power.
Suggestion: Give the Germans one less vet and one less experte
and see what it does.

Reducing the amount of German veterans makes this a surprisingly
even fight. Without taking quality into account, a Tu-2 squadron
is equal to a Bf109 flight, but with superior firepower. The
aces make the difference, but the Germans need to use
positioning to gain maximum advantage.
Victory conditions are another matter. This scenario will
probably swing a lot due to cohesion rolls. if the Germans have
a couple of fighters that just keep passing their rolls, the
Soviets are in trouble.
In this game they didn't, and the Yak 9D didn't even get into
the game (due to crappy cohesion rolls) before all Germans had
broken. The escorts were fairly successful at blocking german
attacks, but the bombers had poor cohesion rolls.
Final score:
Soviet:
Exiting 2 disr, 1 fresh bomber: 12
5 Bf109
17 total
German:
3 P39, 4 Tu2: 11
Total: 6
German victory.
I feel the VP:s need to go down. Loss-wise, this was probably as
good as it gets for the Soviets, but they could have been
luckier with cohesion. I would call 4-6 a draw, and 7+ a Soviet
victory. Other than that, I think the scenario is fine as is. I
don't really see the need for the special rule preventing gun
pods, as a Bf109 with gun pods will be attacking the Tu2:s at a
negative ratio, and the veteran P39:s with edge will eat them
for breakfast. But maybe there is a super-plan using them that
I'm missing.

Germans placed vectors in the wispy clouds and waited for
Soviets to approach. Germans were easily able to attack the
bombers with all flights head-on and unmolested by Soviet
fighters. The Soviet sweep tallied after first combats but since
he was lagging behind, he could not engage 109s until two turns
later. Here was the final score:
German Score: 12VPs (6 shot down Tu-2s) 1VP (shot down fighter)
= 13VPs
Soviet Score: 4VPs (4 downed 109s) 8VPs (1 good and 2 broken
bombers) = 12VPs
Net -1 Soviet VP which is a German Victory
CONCLUSION:
Soviet bombers had 3 really bad cohesion rolls for their
bombers. Basically 2 of them disrupted on first contact with
enemy. Germans engaged bombers 5 times and 4 of those combats
resulted in levels of disruption to the bombers . . . yeah not
average cohesion rolls for Soviets. On the other hand, 2 German
flights broke on first contact with enemy too . .. . so they
weren’t rolling too good on cohesion either.
Bad cohesion rolls for Soviets bombers and some good combat
rolls for both Germans and Soviets = German victory! We’ll see
how my 2nd attempt goes.

Aces High (first playing)
Summary: 10 turns to complete, though it was decided a few turns
earlier
net 16 VP for a Russian win
Narrative: The Germans gave a gun pod to one Veteran/Experte
flight in hopes of being a good bomber-killer. They ran forward
to engage the raiders as early as possible, using head-on
attacks to avoid escort reaction. The P-39s stuck to escort,
with late reaction on turn 3 leading to a dogfight. The Green
crew was in the Yaks (mistake). The flights broke early, one
after its first pass. By turn 5 all Germans and the Yaks were
broken.
Results: Russian VP: 18 for bombers, 3 for kills = 21
German VPs: 1 for fighter kills, 4 for bomber kills = 5
Recommendation: That felt like a Russian win. The Germans
underperformed on shooting and did not even disrupt any bombers.
I need to complete playthroughs with the German flights holding
together a bit longer before I comment on overall balance.

Aces High (second playing)
Narrative:
The Germans gave three flights Experten, Veterans, and gun pods;
the fourth was plain. The Russian Vet/Experte was in the P-39,
with the Green crew in the tail-end Charlie bombers. The Germans
stalked from cloud high and low after bunching up on turn 1.
They used head-on attacks to get some free, but ineffective
shots. A large fight ensued, with the Germans making risky moves
like turning fights against bombers. The P-39s opted not to try
tactical flexibility. Firepower and superior tactics won it for
the Germans.
Results:
Germans had 16 VPs of bomber kills, 3 VPs of fighter kills = 19
Russians had 8 VPs for bombers exiting adn 5 VPs for kills
net -6, a whopping German victory
Observation: Just about every hit by a German SuperFlight (Vet +
Ace + Pod) was a kill because of that 3 firepower. That was the
whole idea, to avoid ineffectual hits on those high-protection
Tu-2s.
Recommendation: I think this scenario is better balanced than
this result suggests. I'll give it one more go with better
Russian play to verify.

Aces High (third playing)
Narrative:
The Germans all took gun pods and used the lurk-in-the-clouds
approach. The Soviets preferred tallying as soon as possible
with the escorts (Vet/Experte) and split into flights. The Yaks
were clever, too, and had the advantage in their first fight,
defending in a bomber's square. The Germans had average cohesion
luck but shot very well, killing seven bombers but disrupting
only one bomber squadron and breaking none. Gun pods + Experten
are deadly.
Results:
Germans 17 VPs for kills = 17
Russians 5 VPs for kills, 15 VPs for exited bombers = 20
Net: 3 for a German win
Recommendation: Limit the Germans to a max of two gun pod
equipped flights. Yeah, that would take more numerical analysis
to verify, but that's how it feels.

The current VP outputs for plays are:
Elias 1st = 1
Elias 2nd = 6
Pete 1st = -1
Dave 1st = 16
Dave 2nd = -6
Dave 3rd = 3
Average = 3.1

Just looking at the score averages, I'm a little concerned that
the draw window is a fraction high and that the scenario
currently favours the Germans. I will try dropping the draw
window by 1 VP, which would, on the balance of current results,
reduce the German win column by 1 and increase the Soviets wins
by 1.
