Petr just informed me of a late change I forgot to implement. It
regards special rule 2, about the placement of the straggler
marker during set-up. In this changed rule the Czech player
places the straggler marker rather than the German. I shall
correct this in the next release, but in the meantime keep a
note of it.

Scenario:Prague In Flames
Version: 0.2
Playtesters: Scott Key, solitaire
Report:
The turn 2 reinforcement has no radio. The Czech flight starting
in A1 has the experte. The Bf-109 Sweep flight has the experte.
It is set-up as far forward and as high as allowed. The forward
escort is close escort. The trailing escort flies 1 square
higher than the middle bomber sqn.
Turn 1: no tallies
Turn 2: Interceptor tallies lead He-111 Sqn
Turn 3: Interceptor attacks lead bombers head-on. Escorts have a
tally. Despite rolling 12s for both sides no hits cause any
losses. Bombers roll a 4 and disrupt. The Doras successfully
start a dogfight.
Turn 4: The reinforcement flight tallies the trailing bombers.
They attack and the trailing escort late reacts. 1 Czech plane
is downed, as a result the B-534 flight breaks and is allowed
to escape. The dogfight started in Turn 3 plays out with no
effects. The Czech experte flight reaches it’s vector.
Turn 5: The Dora experte sweep tallies the circling B-534
experte flight which also tallies the Messerschmitts. Both
aircraft climb a
To gain advantage. The dogfight continues, again with no losses.
The Doras break and are allowed to escape.
Turn 6: The trailing B-534s do not tally and are issued a
return-to-base order so that it will parallel the bombers. The
Luftwaffe sweep dives out of the sun on the Czech experte flight
which has entered a Lufbery. The Czechs lose a straggler and a
downed plane but pass their cohesion DUE TO THE DETERMINATION
BONUS. The Dora flight breaks.
Turn 7: Bombers continue with one escort. The Czech experte
flight tallies the lead bombers but does not move this turn. The
trailing B-534 flight tallies the trailing bombers and climbs up
behind them.
Turn 8: The Czech experte flight dives on the bombers from out
of the Sun. The last Dora escort reacts climbing to stop the
Czech biplanes in the square above the bombers. 1 Dora is lost
and both flights break. The trailing bomber is attacked by it’s
pursuing B-534s who shoot down one He-111 who down 2 biplanes in
their turn. Both units break and the game ends.
Victory: Draw
Czech: -1 vp fighter killed, -2 bomber killed: -3 vp
Luftwaffe: +4 vp fighters killed, +6 vp disrupted bombers
exited, +6 vp good order Bombers exited: +16 vp
Total: +13 CVP, Draw
Recommendations: At first play through this seems to be a pretty
well balanced scenario. Because of the fact that the bombers
must traverse the entire board and there are two distinct zones
of combat there is a lot possible variance in what can happen.
The bombers made some low cohesion rolls and it should be said
that the game could have easily resulted in a +19 vp Luftwaffe
victory if they had rolled 6s or higher.
The clashes between fighter squadrons were unusually bloodless
due to many rolled 2s when determining losses. The initial
fighter clash in turn 3 with the double 12s should have resulted
in at least a loss on each side if not 2 per side due to the
fragility of the planes involved. I would guess that at least 2
more bombers would have been downed in a statistically average
game.
The determination bonus was important in the Czechs staying in
the fight.
For now my recommendation is to leave it as is for another play
or two.

Those B-534s are pretty impressive.

Scenario:Prague In Flames
Version: 0.2
Playtesters: Scott Key, solitaire
March 20, 2019
Report:
Czech experte assigned to the forward interceptor . Luftwaffe
experte assigned to the lead escort. Lead escort flying close
escort with lead bombers, trailing escort flying close with
trailing bombers. The turn 2 B-534 flight assigned No Radio. The
trailing bombers are given the straggler. The Luftwaffe sweep
flight sets up two squares ahead of the leading bombers.
Turn 1: no tallies
Turn 2: no tallies
Turn 3: the reinforcing Avias tally and bounce the trailing
bombers. Late reaction from the close escort. 1 german fighter
and 1 bomber are downed. All cohesion checks are passed. The
Luftwaffe starts a dogfight.
Turn 4: The 109 sweep tallies and attacks the forward Czech
interceptors who are in a Lufbery. The Germans take one loss and
break.
In the dogfight the Czechs inflict 1 loss and a straggler on the
Germans while taking no hits. The germans break but the Czech
flight stays due to Cohesion bonus.
Turn 5: the forward interceptor flight tallies the middle bomber
squadron and attacks out of the sun. The leading escorts roll a
late reaction. The German fighters and bombers each take one
loss. All units pass their cohesion. The Germans successfully
start a dogfight.
The reinforcement interceptors tally and attack the trailing
bombers. The bombers score one no effect hit on the fighters.
The He-111 squadron disrupts and the B-534s (with no radio)
break.
Turn 6: The dogfight resolves with one Bf-109 downed. The
Germans break and the Czechs pass because of their cohesion
bonus.
Turn 7: The Avia forward interceptors tally and pursue the
trailing He-111s
Turn 8: The forward interceptors catch the trailing bombers.
Though 2 hits are scored against the Heinkels they are NE. The
Czech flight breaks.
Turn 9: the last Czech interceptor flight tallies the middle
squadron of bombers. They attack out of the sun downing one
He-111. Both units maintain cohesion.
Turn 10: the B-354 flight continues it’s attack. Both units take
one loss. The bombers disrupt and the Czechs pass due to
cohesion bonus.
Turn 11: The Czechs attack again. No aircraft are lost but both
sides break.
Victory: Czech
Czech: -5 vp fighters killed, -8 bomber killed: -13 vp!
Luftwaffe: +1 vp fighters killed, +3 vp disrupted bomber exited,
+6 vp good order Bombers exited, +1 vp Broken bomber exited: +11
vp
Total: -2 VP
Recommendations:
—This was a terrible loss for the Luftwaffe. In large part this
was due to bad rolls on the fighter attacks and not great rolls
for cohesion.
— The Czech rigid doctrine does not come into play much as they
are usually the attackers however better rolls by the escorts
would make a huge difference.
—The Czech bonus for cohesion rolls played a really large role
in this game and fortunately it was easy to recreate how things
would have played out without that bonus since the resulting
attacks did not result in any additional German casualties it’s
all a matter of adjusting the final cohesion for the bombers: 2
good order squadrons exited for +12 and one disrupted exited for
+3 vp. That’s a +6 adjustment making a new end score of +4 vp,
still a Czech victory.
— Weather primarily influenced things by reducing the distance
of final tally distances however the band of wispy clouds at 5
is an important, possibly critical modifier in the later attacks
on the bombers.
— I suggest adding another German escort flight or eliminating
the cohesion bonus and/OR reducing the vp threshold by about 3
vp (?) . Another possibility is adding some more Wispy clouds at
altitude 5.

Okay, there's quite a bunch of different recommendations there.
I'd like to hear what Petr thinks of these.

Thanks for the first recommendations. I would rather wait for
other reports to come before doing any major adjustments. Also I
would like to stick with the number of fighter flights on both
sides unless we find some major imbalance in the scenario.
But there is one adjustment I would like to do right now:
New specials rule 5 could be "The determination of the Czech
squadrons gives them an additional +1 modifier to their first
Cohesion checks. Do not apply modifier to squadrons marked with
Low/No Ammo."
This is not just about balancing the scenario. I don't want to
give any unrealistic impression by this rule. Ammo issues and
fatigue would still be present.
I am also thinking about the VPs for bomber squadrons
disruptions. They are heading back to Germany so it is not so
relevant in this scenario. What about putting this scoring
method completely out of the scenario? I mean no VPs for
bombers. It would be new special rule though. Or addition to
special rule number 1. Lee, I would like to leave this question
to your call. Is there any other "bombers returning to base"
scenario in the series?
With further adjustments I would prefer to work with VPs
thresholds.
Lee, what do you think?

There are several. Skipping the exiting points usually works
fine, but you need a special rule to prevent them from using the
escape rules right away.

I like the feel of the scenario as is. “If I were king” I would
adjust the vp threshold before even thinking about any of my
other suggestions. I dont feel this is an unbalanced scenario.
The change to the bomber exit vp is a good direction too. Of
course this is just two plays so I will gove it another go next
week.

I thought they couldn’t roll to escape unless they were broken?
