Re: O09 Slow Them at Any Cost!

I meant to shift all counters right from the trucks two columns
to the right (including flights and clouds). That means the
Czech approach to the target (tanks) would be the same but the
time of contact with the germans would be prolonged in case
Czechs would choose tanks as the target. I have played with that
idea a bit and it might work.

Sorry, I'm now confused as to what the surface target and cloud
set-up should be. Rather than say 'move counters right or left'
can you please spell it out for me? (i.e. Trucks in square
such-and-such; Tanks in square X, and so on)

Thanks. Note that Gordon and Andrew had the lone B-534 moved two
columns left, so that would be U1, not W1.

Yes. But with this shift I think it would not make such a
difference. I am in for both U1 and W1.

For reasons, I was unable to make a detailed log, but the gist
of it was that the Germans were unable to shoot down much,
partly because they broke early. On the other hand, they were
effective in preventing good bombing. Not so much because they
broke the bombers as made them bomb early with poorer modifiers
to avoid being attacked before bombing. The exception was the
front two B534s that climbed to be able to do a steep angle
bombing without cloud interference on the tanks. Also, the rear
B71 was broken in the last air combat. One bombing hit was
scored on each target.
Score:
Czech:
3 points bombing, 2 German fighters: 5
Germans:
3 Czech fighters
Total: 2. German victory
Felt like: German victory.
Comments: This scenario can probably be very swingy, when every
single bombing point or bomber loss makes a big difference.
I like the choice between hitting the tanks right away or the
trucks at greater risk of interception. The Tank target might be
a little too difficult to score on with the resources at hand,
however. Maybe weshould give it a +1 target modifier for being
in road column? That would make the choice between the targets a
bit more even.
I kind of miss the clouds of the earlier version for
versimilitude. They really gave the feeling of autumn rains in
central Europe. Also, the way the clouds are set up now, the
Germans can't tally on turn 1. Perhaps a broken cloud layer on
altitude 2 with a gap over the targets? Then again, the clouds
work as is with the current setup.

Turn 2 He51s tally, B-534s steep angle bomb tanks. The one
tallied breaks from flak, so the He51 instead heads for the
bombers. Small arms also shoot down a B534 from the other
flight. No effect from bombs.
T3: Bf109 tallies the unbroken B534. The He51 fails to tally the
B71.
B534 strafes ineffectively.
Bf109 causes one straggler on B534, then both break.
T4: remaining B534 jettisons and tallies Bf109. All remaining
German fighters fail tallies. B534 breaks for no result. Now 2
He51, 1 Bf109 left for no Czech fighters.
T5: All German fighters tally. Front B71 glide bombs trucks. 10
%, 1 hit. 1 B71 shot down, 1 He51 broken.
T6 2 German fighters vs 1 bomber left. 1 Bf109, 1 B71 shot down.
B71s break.
T7: 1 Bf109, 1 B71 shot down again. Bf109 breaks.
T8: Bombing fails, He51 shoots down last B71, for 1 loss.
Score:
Czech: Bombing 2 pts, 3 fighters: 5
German: 4 B71, 1 B534: 9
Total: -4. Massive German win, felt like it.
Comment: The trucks makes it easier for the Czech to score more
than token points for bombing, but given how few hits are to be
expected, it means there is almost no point in bombing the
tanks, which feels wrong. I think doubling the points for tank
hits is needed, but even that is not enough:
Truck:
1 hit: 2 points
2 hits: 4
3: 4
4: 8
5: 8
6: 12
Tanks, doubled:
1: 2
2: 2
3: 3
4: 3
5: 6
6: 6
There is also the small arms flak of the tanks that the trucks
lack.
Because of the small scale, the scenario is very swingy, so I'd
like a couple of more plays for data, but I suggest both
doubling the points for bombing the tank and adding a +1 bombing
modifier for road column.

Okay, we'll try those two recommendations out.

v0.6

Turn 2 No tally, B-534s steep angle bomb. One misses, the other
scores 100%. Which means one more hit on the tanks is now 3 vp.
1 B534 shot down by flak.
T3: Only 1 Bf109 tallies. Another B-534 downed by small arms. No
hits from strafing. Bf109 fails to kill and both break.
T4: All Germans but the Cap tally. Strafing fails. One B-534
aborts in bloodless combat with heinkels. Remaining Bf109 with
experte scores 6 hits against B71! Enough to eradicate it.
T5: All Germans fail to tally. Remaining B534 steep angle bombs
but miss.
T6: 1 Strafing hit on trucks. He51 chases away remaining B534
without losses and aborting itself. Bf109 fails to hit B71 in
head-on.
T7: B71s glide bomb tanks. Miss badly. Germans also miss
bombers.
T8: He51 manages to down a bomber before aborting.
Score:
Czech
Bombing 5, no German AC: 5
Germans: 5 bombers, 2 fighters: 12
Total -7 German massive win.
Comment: I think more or less all games of this scenario are
going to be outliers. In this game, the Germans scored 8 points
in a single combat roll, while the Czech failed several attempts
at scoring a single bombing hit that would have given them 3
more points. Still, even with those two in their favor the score
wouldn't be a Czech win.
I am really having trouble scoring significantly in bombing,
which is not strange given low bombing values and flights
bombing. The latest mods is an improvement, but it is still
easier for the Germans to shoot down bombers than the bombers to
hit.
Given my plays, a Czech result of 8 bombing points while losing
no more than 2 bombers and some fighters would feel like a win.
This would put their victory threshold at 3 or so. But I have
yet to achieve this.

Let me crunch numbers on this again. From what you say it's a
small scenario with very swingy outcomes.
