New scenario thread for playtest of Karelia Suite. Please do not
create a new thread for this scenario.

I need to make a small change to this scenario because of
countermix limits. I shall be removing one of the DB-3
squadrons. You'll see this change in the next release.

Special Rule 1. Finnish squadrons have tactical flexibility.
There are no Finnish D.XXI or M.S.406 flights in the countermix.
Is the plan to use French M.S.406 flights (from Blitz) and Dutch
       D.XXI flights?

I'm going to have to remove that special rule.

       v0.2 of the scenario shows "Cloud Dense in F1-I1, F2-I2, L2-N2;
Broken in L2-N2" That looks like a typo, with two cloud types
       specified for L2-N2.
(For my first test, I'll put Broken in L2-N2.)

       Scenario: O12 Karelia Suite
       Version: v0.3
       Player: Dave Demko
Narrative: The low Russian wing got into the fight late, as much
because of its starting position as because of its tally rolls.
The I-16 wing pulled off one brilliant attack which then whiffed
and left the attacker broken. Russian squadrons tended to break
early, in two cases the lack of radios making the critical
one-pip difference. The Finns rolled brilliantly in air-to-air
combat, slaughtering bombers and breaking two squadrons of SBs.
One squadron of DB-3s was disrupted. The broken bomber squadrons
jettisoned bombs and escaped. Some late fighter breaks happened
in dense cloud. Why fight there? Either try to harvest VPs from
broken enemies or let them escape. A squadron of I-153s saved
the DB-3 formation by forcing a dogfight with the Buffaloes on
       the slimmest of chances.
Victory: Finns 24 for bomber kills, 2 for fighter kills = 26
Russians: 5 for fighter kills, 15 for exited bombers = 20
       net -6, whopping Finnish victory
Recommendations: My super-lopsided Finnish victory had something
to do with the dice, mainly the massacre of bombers, but even so
this one seems hard for the Russians to win. The lack of radios
makes a significant difference to them. Of course, that
asymmetry gives the scenario some of its appeal. I also like the
widely mixed Finnish air zoo and the way all fighters are on
Sweep: no vectors, ever. Consider moving the I-153 wing left a
column or two and increasing its altitude. This will help those
squadrons be part of a fighter swarm, as suggested in the
"Aftermath" text, rather than latecomers. Very fun scenario:
simple, fast moving, and wide open in terms of tactical options.
The Finns can dance, and even the Russians pulled off some
       clever moves in my play-through.

One side question: Is the snow ever going to matter? Since the
bombers have to maintain altitude, the main action won't get
below the dense clouds. It's true, though, that broken fighters
might go hide there. And it's a nice historical touch. Maybe
eliminate the die roll and always have snow in effect.

       So, maybe try this:
       (1) The I-153 wing at V5, V5, W5?
       (2) Snow is fixed beneath the dense cloud (no die roll).

       Scenario: O12 Karelia Suite
       Version: v0.3
       Playtesters: Chris Bryans (Solo)
Report: This is my first playtest of this scenario.
Set up: Snow beneath dense cloud
       Turn One
I16 wing leader tallies G50. Orders all squadrons to engage a/c
in that formation – I and J will go after G.50 and K will go
       after Gladiator.
       Gladiator tallies I16 wing leader
Finn flights and squadrons on sweep move toward support of
Gladiator and G.50 as they climb toward I16 wing.
I16 I, J vs G50 nets one loss and one straggler on G.50
Cohesion disrupts both I16 and G.50.
       I16 K vs Gladiator ne
       Cohesion: I16 K disrupted
       G50 pins I16 I and J in dogfight
No dogfight between I16 and Gladiator
       Turn Two
       DXXI tallies SB T

I16K fails to tally DXXI which is diving out of the sun
       B239 tallies SB S
       Gladiator tallies I16K
Dogfight I16I and J vs G.50 nets two losses and straggler
(becomes loss). G.50 nets straggler on I16I. G.50 is removed
       for max losses
Both I16I and J are broken
I16K vs Gladiator nets one loss on I16K
       Cohesion: I16K broken
B239 vs. SB S nets one loss one straggler
       Cohesion: B239 disrupted
DXXI vs SB T nets one loss on SB T
       Cohesion: SB T disrupted
       Turn Three
Gladiator drops tally on broken I16K and tallies SB U
       MS 406 tallies SB S
I153 M (wing leader) tallies Gladiator and orders Wing to
       concentrate on it
       Gladiator vs. SB U ne
       Cohesion: Gladiator disrupted
       DXXI vs SB T: ne
       Cohesion: both good
MS406 and B239 vs. SB S: One loss, one straggler becomes loss,
       one straggler
       Cohesion: SB S disrupts
       Turn Four
I153s still can’t catch up! Next turn.
Gladiator vs. SB U two stragglers on SB and one Gladiator loss
       Cohesion: SB U disrupted
DXXI vs SB T: one loss on both
       Cohesion: both good
MS406 and B239 vs. SB S: Two losses, one straggler becomes loss,
       one straggler
       Cohesion: SB S broken
       Turn Five
MS406 and B239 drop tally on SB S and tally SB T
I153s M and N finally pounce on the disrupted Gladiator and net
       one Gladiator loss
       Cohesion: Gladiator breaks
MS406 and B239 vs SB T net a loss and straggler on SB T
Cohesion: B239 break and SB T disrupts
       Turn Six
       All three I153 tally MS406
I153 M and N vs MS406 net one loss on MS406 and two straggler on
       I153
       Cohesion: MS406 disrupts and I153 N breaks
       MS406 breaks off potential dogfight
       Turn Seven

MS406 dives through dense clouds. I153s do not follow.
       Victory:
       Finns: one I16 and nine SB= 19
Soviets: Two Gladiators, one B239, four G.50, one MS406= 8
points + Exit points (two DB3 squadrons exited (12) Two SB
       disrupted (6) and one broken (1)) = 19
       19+8=27
       27-19=8 Finnish victory
Recommendations: This will take more playtesting but I suspect
that the distance of the 25 IAP certainly allows the Finns to
decimate the SBs well before the I153s are within contact range.
I probably could have had the MS406 and B239 dive for home While
the I153s were busy with the Gladiator, thus keeping the score
from inching closer in the Soviets’’ favor. Too early to say
whether the I153s should be set up closer – like in U and V.
Both IAPs are set up directly under the bombers – perhaps a
sweep should place them well-ahead of the bombers. David Demko
has said something similar in his playtest. They look too much
like escorts. The victory conditions may be too high in the
Finns’ favor. One way to adjust this is to award just one point
per bomber but that still would have been a Finnish victory.
27-10=17. Had only one SB disrupted, plus reducing bombers to
one point apiece, it would have been 33-10=23, a draw.
However, I need to play test some more.

I've made some substantial changes to the Soviet DB-3 and I-153
set-ups. Let's see what effect that has on play.
