Scenario: Sourabaya Johnny— second play
Version: 0.3
Playtesters: Scott Key, solitaire
April 19, 2019
Report:
The Allies assigned their veterans to the P-40E squadron. The
Japanese assigned both veterans to bomber squadrons and the
experte to the lower leading sweep squadron. There were no
height errors.
Turn 1: The lead CW-21 flight tallies and head-on intercepts the
lead G3M2 squadron. One CW-21 is lost, both make their cohesion
rolls.
Turn 2: -The lower A6M2 squadrons tally the CW-21s that are
attacking the leading Nells but cannot join the fight this turn.
-The Hawk squadron tallies the lead Nell sqn and climbs to join
the fight. No hits were scored by either side. The Hawk squadron
is disrupted.
Turn 3: - The two engaged Allied units drop their tallies and
tally the trailing Nell squadron. Another CAAP CW-21 flight
tallies the lead Nell sqn.
- Direct-fire Flak fires on the two leading Nell units, one
squadron is forced to make a cohesion check, which is passed
- Bombing from two Nell sqns against the airfield scores 4
points of damage.
- The lead A6M2 sqn (experte) attacks the allied units which are
attacking the trailing Nells. 1 Hawk straggles. The CW-21 flight
breaks and escapes. Yhe Zero squadron initiates a dogfight.
- GCI moves the vectors for the P-40 flt and the remaining CW-21
flight.
Turn 4: - Direct flak causes a Nell sqn and the leading top
sweep to check cohesion, both lass.
- Bombing places another 2 hits on the airfield resulting in
major damage.
- Dogfight results in 2 downed Zeros and one downed and one
straggling Hawk (for a net loss of two). Both squadrons break
and escape.
Turn 5:- A Cw-21 flight is climbing to vector on the Betties but
is tallied by and tallies the top leading sweep. The CW-21
flight enters a Lufbery and is attacked. 1 Zero straggles and
both combatants maintain cohesion.
- A climbing CW-21 flight tallies the middle G3M2 squadron and
dives on it. It is tallied by the lower rearmost Zero sweep and
a fight erupts with no downed aircraft. All a/c pass cohesion.
The Japanese start a dogfight.
- the Nells have turned back towards their friendly board edge.
The lead squadron voluntarily broke and escapes at the end of
the turn.
Turn 6: - The remaining Nell squadrons voluntarily break.
- Direct flak vs the Betty squadrons results in one passed
cohesion check.
- The dogfight results in no losses but the CW-21 flight breaks
and the Zeros disrupt.
- The remaining Cw-21 flight stays in a Lufbery and downs one
Zero, causing the A6M2 squadron to disrupt. The CW-21 flight
breaks.
- The P-40s failed to tally and are flying past and below the
Betties.
- Another Nell squadron escapes.
Turn 7: - The trailing top sweep tallies the P-40s and the
recently disrupted top sweep squadron also tallies it. The P-40s
continue to fail their Tally rolls. Both Zeros attack the
Warhawk flight. 2 P-40s are downed but the flight maintains
cohesion. One A6 M2 sqn breaks and the other is disrupted. The
Japanese start a dogfight.
- Direct flak downs one Betty but both G4M1 squadrons maintain
good order. They bomb the port for 4 damage causing Minor
Damage.
- The final Nell sqn escapes
Turn 8: - The Betties turn towards their friendly board edge.
The lead sqn voluntarily breaks.
- The dogfight results in one Zero downed. Both combatant units
break and the game ends
Victory: IJN
Allies: x4 Zeros killed for -4 vp; x1 bombers killed for -2 vp:
-6 vp
IJNAF: x5 allied fighters killed for +5vp; Minor Damage to Port
for +6 vp; Major Damage to Airfield for+10 vp: +21 vp
Total: +15 vp
Recommendations:
- This version of the scenario was tighter and more tense.
- Combat and Hit rolls were universally low and I think both
sides could easily have lost another 2 fighters each. This would
not have changed the out come, however.
- The Japanese fighter sweeps did a much better job of keeping
the allied interceptors occupied which in turn raised the
bombing totals
- The bomber squadrons could easily have disrupted at least once
with all the cohesion rolls that were forced by flak and that
would have lowered the IJN vps by a minimum of -5 vp which is
still a victory, but only just. I will have to think of the best
way to minimize Japanese bombing vps.
- I like the current target placement and the new cloud set-up.

Okay, we'll get a couple more tests in with the new set-up
before we adjust further.

I'm on it and hoping to get to the point of sign off this time.
Just reading Samurai by Saburo Sakai and his descriptions of air
battles are very intense! This engagement gets a large
treatment in his book.

cenario: O14 Sourabaya Johnny
Version: v0.3 new
Playtesters: Solo
Report: I really enjoy this scenario and think this is now much
more balanced with the numbers. The key change has been to the
medium bomber scoring. The bombers scored 8 hits on Airfield
and 1 hit on the port. A Zero which remained out of the combat
swooped down for a strafe of the airfield. Roll was a 9 with a
+3 to get two hits of damage! That was worth 5 VP being the
difference between Minor and Heavy Damage. Otherwise the game
would have been a draw at 9VP.
Victory:
Japanese bombing 1 VP against Port + 10VP against Airfield +
enemies shot down 12 VPs = 23VPs
Allied enemies shot down 1 VP fighter + 8 VP bombers = 9VPs
Total: 14 VP's = Japanese win and felt like it.
Luck: this wasn't very uneven. Twice the IJN scored big, but
also had a few very poor cohesion results so feel this was even.
Recommendations:
I will sign this off! I'm comfortable knowing the Japanese can
now win the scenario, and think the Allies can still win if they
chew up more bombers in Air combat. There were 3 bombers lost
to Flak which is a bit high I think, so it could have been close
if the strafing had not been so successful.
Questions:
When Medium bombers get static hits, do any negative Flak
modifiers have an effect on the hits?
Is this engagement dated 19 February as detailed in Sakai's
"Samurai?" Or was his diary incorrect? He states he arrives at
Balikpapan on Feb 4th, and is credited with a kill on the 5th,
but there is a huge battle on the 19th.

Scenario: O14 Sourabaya Johnny
Version: v0.3 new
Playtesters: Solo
Report: I just played this for fun after signing off and wow
what a result! IJN tallies were poor but I was more selective
as Allies of targets. I didn't hit the Nells so hard and two of
the flights of CW-21B's dashed through the broken cloud P7-S7 to
try to get a pot shot at the Bettys. They didn't sneak through
but one flight managed some serious disruption of a Betty and a
Zero squadron. Then the P-40 arrived and gave his pursuers the
slip being at a higher altitude. He broke up one Zero squadron
before getting his shark teeth into a returning Betty squadron
which was accompanied by the IJN ace. That didn't stop him from
bagging a Zero and a Betty for his final turn. And to think
I'd toyed with the idea of making him the Veteran! I still
think the Hawk squadron needs the Veteran to get the tallies
moving along on Turn 1.
Victory:
Japanese bombing 1 VP against Port + 5VP against Airfield +
enemies shot down only 5 VPs = 11VPs
Allied enemies shot down 5 VP fighter + 12 VP bombers = 17VPs
Total: -6 VP's = Allies win and that was incredible!
Luck: IJN had bad luck in tallies but did well with bombing.
The decision to not concentrate on the Airfield was an issue and
they also did not do well in air combat. The flight of the P-40
was stuff of legend though! survived several cohesion results
and was bagging two IJN planes were turn during his run! Flak
Recommendations: Already signed off, but my only
recommendation is do not print this game unless it contains this
scenario!!!

No, they shoulden't.

No, this is the engagement of 3rd February as detailed in Shores
and Cull's Bloody Shambles Volume 2. It's one of the few big
engagements featuring CW-21s.

Cool playtests, Kevin!
I’ve looked at the VP outputs for your four plays, which
includes one play with the previous configuration and three with
the old:
Japanese bombing vs. Port 6 + 6 + 1 + 1 = 3.5 mean VPs
Japanese bombing vs. Airfield 5 + 10 + 10 + 5 = 7.5 mean VPs
Japanese vs. fighters: 8 + 5 + 12 + 5 = 7.5 mean VPs
Allied vs. bombers: 6 + 2 + 8 + 12 = 7 mean VPs
Allied vs. fighters: 5 + 4 + 1 + 5 = 3.75 mean VPs
This gives us a mean total of 18.5 - 10.75 = 7.75
This suggests our draw window is still a little high and needs
to be adjusted down by 1. But otherwise no further changes.

Hi Lee, I would welcome a lower draw window by one point only.
Seems pretty balanced at the moment. A thought I’d had is
whether IJN should always be trying to get major damage on the
airfield but they risk not hitting the port if it all goes
wrong. They also might need to successfully strafe to get the 10
vp which could be dicey.
Thanks for reference to the book. Sakai’s account doesn’t place
him in Balikpapan until Feb 4, but doesn’t affect the game. He
wasn’t the only hotshot pilot n the 23rd AirFlot!

Scenario: Sourabaya Johnny— third play
Version: 0.4
Playtesters: Scott Key, solitaire
May 3, 2019
Report:
The Allies assigned their veterans to the higher CW-21 squadron.
The Japanese assigned both veterans to bomber squadrons and the
experte to the lower leading sweep squadron. There were no
height errors.
Turn 1:- The Hawks and the leading CW-21 sqn/flt tallied a Nell
sqn each. They climbed to altitude 6.
Turn 2: -The leading and middle Nell squadrons are attacked (no
bounce & not head-on); 1 Hawk and 1 Nell are downed.
Turn 3: - All combatants from previous round occupy same square.
- Direct Fire flak attacks all aircraft in that square (2 Nell
squadrons, 1 Hawk sqn, 1 CW-21 flt). One Nell sqn is disrupted.
- Bombing inflicts 3 damage.
- Another CW-21 flight joins the Hawks, 1 Nell is lost as a
result of their combat.
Turn 4: - Flak downs one Nell from the last bombing squadron.
- 2 more points of bombing damage to the airfield for a final
Minor Damage result
- The lower Zeroes enter combat. The experte sqn tallies and
bounces the Hawks who are evading downing two of them. The
trailing low sweep tallies and attacks the CW-21 flight that is
attacking the middle Nell sqn. 1 Nell is downed and both
Japanese units break.
- The leading Nell squadron inflicts two losses on the attacking
CW-21 flight which breaks as a result.
- The Hawk squadron starts a dogfight.
Turn 5:- The final, veteran, CW-21 flight is tallied by both
upper Japanese sweeps who then attack it downing one CW-21,
breaking the allied flight.
- The dogfight results in a disrupted Zero sqn and broken Hawks.
2 A6M2s are downed.
- The last CW-21 flight attacking the Nells breaks. Nells
escape.
Turn 6: - Direct flak disrupts the leading Betty squadron.
- the upper Zero sweeps have no tallies and circle.
Turn 7: - the P-40 flight tallies and attacks the leading
Betties.
- Flak is ineffective
Turn 8: - the P-40s dive into cloud with Return to Base orders.
The Zero squadrons circle.
- Flak downs another Betty
- 4 points of damage are scored against the Port for Minor
damage.
Victory: Allies
Allies: x2 Zeros killed for -2 vp; x4 bombers killed for -8 vp:
-10 vp
IJNAF: x5 allied fighters killed for +5vp; Minor Damage to Port
for +6 vp; Minor Damage to Airfield for+5 vp: +16 vp
Total: +6 vp
Recommendations: - I think I like this where it is.
- Lots of bombers lost to flak which is the main reason why this
scenario wasn’t a Japanese victory.
