Scenario: O17
Version: v0.1
Playtesters: Hans solo
Report: Two playings to report here. Actually three, but I
aborted the second game after the first round of combat.
Victory: bombing Nat kia Rep kia VP
Game 1: 1VP 0 0 +1 end
of Turn 1
Game 2: 0VP 1 4 -3
end of Turn 1
Game 3: 1VP 5 2 +4 draw
played to a finish
Recommendations: It occured to me during game 1 that if the
Republicans were winning after the round and just returned to
base after the first turn, then they can just exit the board and
win the game. The Blue Patrol broke after the first round, so
there were no options of binding the Rep in a dogfight so the
Fiat Group can kick in. So they turned for home leaving enough
room to decrease altitude one level per turn and exit the map on
Turn 4 before any Fiats can catch up. Game 2 was similar
though but they of course scored big against the bombers.
Game 3 was a different story as the Blue Patrol hung in there
against a squadron of I-15's. As the Fiat Group approached,
they were bounced by the I-16's with multiple dogfights, which I
think is the intention of the scenario to model the whirling
battle that ensued over Jarama. That game was a draw, but with
losses of 5 to 2 and 1VP scored on the bunker, it felt more like
a decent Nat effort.
This is a tough one to model. On Turn 1, the Republicans are
basically getting a full shot with only the Blue Patrol to
resist them. They are more likely to hold the Nat's to low VP
and then they can exit. I think something needs to change in
the setup to force the melee, if even that means shifting all
the start positions to the left about 5 columns. Then the
I-15's cannot slip away so easily. That might do it, in fact.
I also think the draw window is pretty wide. As the
Nationalists cannot score that much damage in bombing, they
should get some kind of bombing VP bonus which puts the game
into a likely draw window end of Turn 1. A single VP could
force the issue. Or drop the draw window to +1 to +4.
I recommend shifting the setup of all units 4 hexes to the left
so that the bunker is at K0. If the I-15's go to the deck after
the ambush then they can potentially be caught up with on turns
4 and before they can exit.

Actually, this needs thinking about. I'm wrong that the Fiats
can catch up on turns 4 and 5. It wouldn't be till turn 6 that
they could catch up to any fighter which has attacked the Ro.37
squadron at level 3. This puts a lot of importance on the Blue
Patrol to either mire a squadron in a dogfight, or hold a
squadron in position by catching one after they are chasing
bombers.
Perhaps the Fiat Group could sweep forward the usual 2 hexes on
Turn 1, but still leave the Tally restriction so they cannot
engage. The I-15's would be at a disadvantage then (following
their Turn 1 advantage), and the I-16's would desperately be
needed to level things up. Then you've got a guaranteed
melee!
What is meant by "commencing pursuit" in special rule 6?

I've got a question about the Fiat Group. Does the special rule
about orders overrule the normal ability to order all units to
target the tallied target? Just checking because they got a
tally on turn 2 and ordered another squadron to also tally that
target, but the remaining flight and squadron are left circling.
I've assumed they circle until they can tally. Also the
remaining squadron and flight has the wing leader so they are
all that is left in formation and do not have a tally.
Therefore they have to circle if I've got this right.

I have read the scenario and your AARs, Kevin, and the
scenario needs a rethinking. It is a very difficult situation
to simulate and in the original design there were many SSR. Due
to space issues the scenario was changed and I need to
understand well the implications.

Sure thing, I’ll hold fire on this scenario. Thanks

Looking at the scenario and the AAR, I have some thoughts:
(1) The ‘trickle in’ effect of special rule 5 can lead to
various complications. Maybe we should simplify and drop SSR 5.
(2) My initial thought here is to have the FIAT group circle,
and then revert to Continue behaviour once the Blue Patrol has
made contact/Republicans have cross the N column line.
I’m making a couple of tweaks for people to review and test.

Totally agree Lee
The Italians must be in CAP and circling until the Blue Patrol
start a combat
But I have more doubts. The Republicans arre in CAP. Their
behavior must be more aggressive. They are looking for a fight
actively. I think a intercept mission could be more adequate.
Blue Patrol is central. They are a Superhero Flight and I think
they need more special modifiers as in the original design . +2
conexión, +2 air combat, +2 losses, +2 gaining attack position,
+2 forcing dogfigth. But... if they are killed they give a lot
of VP to republicans. In the original design they gave 10 VP

Okay, so in addition to the changes in the current scenario
(which I should have marked v0.2, but for some reason forgot, so
that it's still marked v0.1.) we have the following possible
changes:
(1) Change the Republican CAPs to Intercept misssons. (Note that
a clever Republican player could set their vector to a square in
Column O and avoid triggering the Fiat Group.)
(2) Give the Blue Patrol an additional combat modifier of some
kind.

I’m working on this scenario during this week. I hope to send
you the result of rethinking about new or modified SSR
