Scenario: O18 Less Trucks, More Balls
Version: v0.3
Playtesters: Chris Bryans (Solo)
Report: This is first playtest of this scenario. Please note
that I ran this purely as a strafing attack. If it is to
include bombing, I’ll rerun it. The previous playtester seemed
to also run it purely as a strafing attack.
Turn One
CR32 D tallies SB T Chose to have this one flying to the right
to catch the SB., anticipating that it would go for the high
value train target.
The other CR32 with the expert is flying very low to try to
avoid being spotted by the Sweep I16.
Air Combat:
Despite the position of the SB in the thick clouds, the CR32
will engage. This may be a mistake but….well, there’s the title
of the scenario, right?
CR32 vs. SB: Engaged in turning fight to increase the odds in
my favor, knowing that the dense clouds (-2)will offset the
defender’s +2 advantage somewhat.
It worked: SB loses one.
Cohesion: both disrupted
Turn Two
I16K fails tally of CR32 C
CR32 C tallies R-Z V
Small arms targets SB strafing train (-3 to strafing attack –
disruption, flak results)
Cohesion: good
SB strafing attack: n/e (it would have been 10% had it not been
disrupted)
CR32D vs. SB: loss, straggler on CR32D
Cohesion: CR32D’s luck runs out: broken But so does the SB
which also breaks
CR32C vs. R-Z V: n/e
Cohesion: good
Turn Three
I16K fails tally of CR32C (it was a very good idea to fly low –
the I16 needed a six to tally.
Small arms targets R-Z U: one loss and -2 on strafing run
Cohesion: good
Small arms targets I-15E: One loss -1 on strafing run
Whole lot of strafin’ goin’ on!
R-Z U vs Trucks: 50% (one hit)
I-15E: 10% (zero hits)
CR32C vs. R-Z V: n/e (again!) You can teach…monkeys to fly
better than that!
Cohesion: good
Turn Four
Small arms targets R-Z U on its second strafing run: n/e
Cohesion: good
Small arms targets I-15E on its second strafing run: straggler
and -1 on strafing run
Cohesion: good
Small arms targets R-Z V on first strafing run over train: n/a
Cohesion: Good
Strafing run R-Z vs trucks: 25% (zero hits)
Strafing run I-15 E vs. troops: 50% (one hit)
Strafing run R-Z V vs. trains: 100% (one hit)
Strafing run I-15 I vs. trains: 100% (one hit)
Some serious high rolls on the strafing attacks!
CR-32 C vs. R-Z V: n/e
Cohesion: R-Z V disrupted
Turn Five
Small arms vs R-Z V on second strafing run: n/e
Strafing run I-15I vs. trains: 100% (one hit)
Strafing run R-Z V vs trains: 10% (zero hits)
CR32C vs. R-Z V: Two losses on R-Z V and one on CR32 C
Cohesion: CR32C broken
End scenario: Ammo depleted on Republican aircraft
Victory:
Republicans: 2 (Two CR32) + 5 vp (3 hits on train) + 1 vp (one
hit on troops) + 2 vp (one hit on trucks)= 10 vp
Nationalists: one SB (2 vp) + four single-engine = 6 vp
10-6=4 Nationalist victory
Recommendation: It was unclear to me whether or not this was a
strafing mission ONLY and that the Republicans were not equipped
with bombs. Reading some of the past playtest reports I see
some that seemed to have bombed the targets – others, such as
Scott Key’s most recent seemed to use only strafing.
I will rerun the scenario if it is to be both bombing and
strafing. From looking at the victory conditions, this would
seem to be the case. I thought about bombing from special rule
1 (which is standard) but it merely refers to 15.0, which
includes strafing attacks.
Apart from this, is the position of the I-16. Positioning one of
the CR32s on altitude one all but prevented its interception
unless a veteran was allotted to the I16.
I would drop the I16 one level to H5.

Chris,
15.2.1.1 Strafing states that squadrons on a strafing mission
are assigned a bomb load as normal. They can either bomb or
strafe repeatedly until they have no ammo remaining or they want
to cease attacking.

Thanks, Vincent! I clearly bypassed that and went straight to
15.3.7. I figured something was wrong. I will replay this
one.

I'm not going to change the altitude of the high I-16s yet. As a
sweep squadron it can always descend to strafe when near the
targets, so can be brought into action that way.

Scenario: O18 Less Trucks, More Balls
Version: v0.3
Playtesters: Chris Bryans (Solo)
Report: This is second playtest of this scenario. No matter
how many times I play this beautiful system, I learn something
new!
Turn One
CR32D tallies SB T
Air Combat
CR32D attacks SB T which has ducked into the clouds: SB T loses
one and so does CR32D
Cohesion: both good
Turn Two
CR 32C tallies R-Z U
I16K fails tally of CR32 C
SB T bomb run over trains at altitude one to avoid small arms:
25% (3 hits)
Air Combat
CR32D vs SB T: one loss on SB T two losses on CR32 D
Cohesion: both disrupted
CR32C vs R-Z U: two losses on R-Z U and one on CR32 C
Cohesion: good
Turn Three
I16K tallies CR32 C
Small arms AA vs. R-Z U glide bombing trucks: one loss
Cohesion good
Bomb run R-Z U: 25% (2 hits)
Bomb run R-Z V: 50% (4 hits)
Air Combat
CR32D vs SB T: one loss on CR32D
Cohesion: both broken
CR32C vs. R-ZU: 2 losses on R-Z U and one on CR32C
Cohesion: R-Z U disrupted
Turn Four
Small arms AA vs. I15E: one loss
Cohesion good
Small arms AA vs. R-Z U on strafing run against train: one loss
Cohesion good (rolled 11)
Strafing run R-Z U on train: 100% (rolled boxcars) (1 hit)

Bomb run I15I: 25% on trucks (1 hit)
Air Combat
I16K and R-Z U vs. CR32 C: one straggler on I16K
Cohesion: I16K and R-Z U break; CR32C disrupted
Turn Five
CR32C drops tally on I16K and R-Z and tallies R-Z V
Small arms AA vs R-Z V: one loss
Cohesion: good
Small arms AA vs. I15I: one loss
Cohesion: I15I breaks (snake eyes)
Strafing run I15E: 25% (0)
Turn Six
Small arms AA vs. R-Z V: one loss
Cohesion good
Strafing run R-Z V on train: 50% (1 hit)
CR32 C vs. R-Z V: three R-Z V losses
Cohesion: CR32C broken; R-Z V disrupted
Turn Seven
Small arms AA vs. R-Z V: n/e
Cohesion: broken
End scenario
Victory:
Nationalists: 11 R-Z (11 vp) + Two SB (4 vp) + Two I15 (2 vp)=
17
Republicans: 5 hits on train = double damage (10)+ 6 hits on
trucks= triple damage (12 vp) + six CR32 =28 vp
28-17=11 Draw – felt like a draw since the Republicans
destroyed their targets completely as well as half a squadron of
CR32s with them. However, it was a costly victory since they
lost three times as many aircraft as the two squadrons sent
against them.
Also a fun scenario loaded with decision making and risks on the
part of both players.
Sign me off on this one!

Andrew (Nationalists) & I have now had 2 runs through this one &
we're happy to sign it off with no modifications to its current
state.
it is a fun scenario with perhaps more decisions than at first
appear to be the case & excellent for working through the ground
attack rules trying to maximise the effect of the Republican
bombing & strafing in the face of fairly soft targets & a lot of
small arms barrage flak.
First run saw dice that flattered the Republicans with excellent
cohesion and bombing rolls.
Nationalists lost 3 fighters against 3 fighters & 5 R-Zs for the
Republicans.
Bombing was excellent with 4 hits on both trucks & the train for
26 VP together with 3 hits on the troops (2 VP)
Final score was +23 for a very solid Republican victory; aided
by excellent dice.
Second run saw 3 fighter losses on both sides together with 5
R-Zs & 1 SB (AtA Nationalists 11 VP republicans 3 VP)
Bombing was reasonable although the Republicans were hampered by
poor cohesion rolls yielding negative bombing modifiers. The
trucks were hit for 12 VP total with 5 more VP on the train
Final result was +9 for a narrow Nationalist win, which felt
right.
The game fits the historical narrative well, the cloud is well
placed for the bombers to exploit but also potentially cramps
the scope for glide bombiong the left hand truck or-for the
R-Zs-the train.
After 2 runs I think I could still improve my approach to the
bombing. Equally there are some interesting choices for both
sides about how to use their fighters (Andrew voluntarily
dropped a tally on the SBs after disrupting them rather than
engage them again in the cloud for example) & I think there is
plenty of replay value here. The repeated attacks on ground
targets is unusual-the flak is thin enough & the targets soft
enough that repeated strafing is-unusually-worthwhile.
Good scenario we're both happy to sign off on as is.
Cheers
Gordon

Roger that. I think we can stick a fork in this scenario and
call it done.
