[quote author=Stefano Piccardo link=topic=74.msg1886#msg1886
date=1551001686]The rule (4.7) strictly says that the modifier
applies "based on the weather flown through during the bombing
profile or affecting the line of sight to the target at the
moment the bombs drop".
Correct, so for the cloud to affect the bombing you either have
to:
(a) Fly through the cloud during the bombing profile, or
(b) Have it affect the line of sight when the bombs drop.
So, if you could avoid doing either of these things, you’re
okay.
[quote author=Stefano Piccardo link=topic=74.msg1886#msg1886
date=1551001686]In looking at the train in S0 with a broken
cloud marker over it in S2, I suppose that a fighter bomber
starting in R4, could make a steep dive bombing flying in R3,
R2, S1 and dropping bombs in S1 without being affected by the
broken
clouds in S2.
Correct. You slide down through a gap in the cloud.
[quote author=Stefano Piccardo link=topic=74.msg1886#msg1886
date=1551001686]The same could not be attempted on the troops in
O0 as the dense clouds in O2 block lOS at the beginning of the
dive.
Incorrect. The cloud does not affect the line of sight when
starting the profile. It only affects it when the profile ends
and you drop the bombs. As the bombing profile against the
troops ends in O1, the cloud will not affect the attack.
Getting at the Trucks is trickier. My recommendation would be to
begin a glide bombing attack in N2, that moves N2 -> O1 -> P0
and bombs the Trucks in their own square. This does risk
exposure to small arms, however.

Done a replay of the scenario.
Again Version 1.0, played solitarie
AAR: the SB bombers crews got smart this day and hedgehopped
between clouds leaving the train to others and going for the
trucks.
In this way they avoided the Cr32s. The eastern most one
squadron tallied them on turn 1 and went in the clouds in U3
with them and later in S2 but decided to postpone
the attack till the evading bombers come out in the clear
weather. The second Nationalist squadron turned east and went
for the SBs but never found them int the cloud and was forced to
circle in S4 where he placed its vector marker in the setup.
The SB exited from the clouuds on turn 3, dived and level bombed
the trucks, obtaining 4 hits on them. They wer immediately later
attacked by the CR32 that managed to shoot down three of them
in two turns of attacks before breaking.
The remaining Republicans split in two, with the I-15s fighter
bombers and the I-16 going East for the train while the R-Zs
glide bombed the troops and trucks. The I-16 manged to tally the
circling CR32
squadron and dove on it, surprising it and shooting down 2 Cr32s
in the resulting doghfight. Every one else bombed its intended
target (the I-15s with steep diving attacks) for a further total
1 hit on trucks,
4 hits on the train and 1 hit on the troops. I corrected a
mistake I made in preceeding trials at this scenario allowing
only the I-15 to strafe (only strafing and sweeping squadrons
are allowed to strafe, bombing
squadron cannot do it as a re-reading of the rules cleared for
me).
RESULTS:
Nationalist: 2 SB shot down x 4 VP, 1 I-15 shot down x 1 VP:
TOTAL 5 VP
Republicans: 2 CR32s shot down x 2 VP, 2 hits on troops x 1 VP,
4 hits on truck x 8 VP, 4 hits on Train x 10 VP: TOTAL 21 VP.
21 - 5 = 16 VP -> Republican victory!
Final consideration: the result was certainly dependend on the
smart move by the SBs to hide in the clouds. THis results in one
of the CR 32s totally missing them and in practice becoming
a sitting target for the Republican I-16 arriving from the west.
In the confusion that reigned between the Italians, I forgot to
split the squadron attacking the SBs and of course this resulted
in a quick exit from the scene by it and its experte pilot,
resulting in a mere 3 SBs shot down. Free to choose its target
at ease by the formal absence of covering squadrons the
Republican bombers finally manged to get decent results on
bombing and grabbet a total victory out of it.
I will stop paly this scenario, at least for the moment, leaving
for other to try it. If necessary I will then play it again with
pleasure.
Lets' go to see how the Condor Legion fought in the sunny skies
of Spain...

Thanks for that AAR. Very useful and interesting use of cloud to
shield the bombers.
Yes, move on to another scenario and we'll try and get fresh
eyes on this one.

Dear Lee,
I saw you posted a reply to my rule question.
You are right with your consideration about glide bombing the
trucks. What I thinck it is impossible to do is Steep angle
bombing on them as for the rules
"you must have a line of sight to the target at the moment the
profile commences" and with the necessity to dive three squares
starting from a column adjacent
to the target one this is made impossible by the dense cloud
layer in O2-Q2. I was looking for a possibility to rise the
bombing efficiency by making
the Fighter bombers use the steep angle bombing profile. I do
not know why, but in all my playing of this and other scenarios,
I was used to obtain very bad
results with bombing. This happens due to my innate capability
of rolling very low, of course ;D ;D ;D, but I am a bit
disappointed in not blastering ground targets and
i am always looking on how to improve the effect with everything
possible....

That's cool. I think in the new configuration this scenario
challenges players on how to optimise their attacks on targets.
Of course, we can't legislate for bad die rolls!

V0.2
I'm going away next week, so I thought I'd squeeze in another
playtest before that, and picked the smallest one I hadn't
played yet and was still in yellow.
The CR32s tallied the SB:s turn 1 and they trurned into a VP
farm. The I15:s tried to stay on target but it might be a good
idea to tally with the experte. The Nationalists just rolled
insane in combat, first with the fighters that rolled lots of
10+ results. The bombers also did fine, causing max damage on
the trucks and heavy damage on the troops, leaving only the
trains.
Then, by turn 4 when the last Nationalist fighter had left and
the strafing was about to begin, mostly against the trains. That
took down an aircraft with every single small arms shot. 2 I15,
1 SB, 1 R-Z were los to those trains, for a single strafing hit.
The net -2 for the Republicans didn't make a difference on the
end result however.
Score:
Republicans:
Bombing: 17 points, 3 fighters: 20
Nationalists: 1 I16, 2 I15, 5 R-Z, 5 SB: 18
Total 2 Nationalist victory
Felt like: A Nationalist killing spree.
Comments:
I don't think I can judge balance with those rolls. The SB feels
like it is set up to be a VP farm, but I understand they were a
valuable asset so I hesitate to reduce their value.
You might consider adding back 1 target, I felt like I was
running out. If you have given heavy damage to a target and need
3 more to get more points and all you got is strafing, you don't
bother with those.
Spelling: Special rule 2: Must BE assigned.

It’s rare that we run out of targets to attack. I shall add more
trucks to the Train group of targets.

v0.3
Player: Elias Nordling (Solo)
This time played very differently than the last time. The
Nationalist fighters didn't kill a lot of bombers and broke
fairly early, but they managed to disrupt or break almost all
the bombers thanks to poor cohesion rolls.
One of the I15:s jettisoned its bombs to engage the enemy
fighters, but the I16 failed to tally and sat out the air
combat, so it went strafing anyway.
The strafing rolls were probably average but the bombing rolls
poor, so in the end, the Republicans only managed to gain max
damage on one truck, the rest of the bombing targets were
untouched.
Score:
Reps:
Bombing 12, 2 CR.32: 14
Nats: 1 I15, 1SB, 3RZ: 6
Score: 8
Nationalist victory
Felt like a Nationalist victory. They didn't kill much but they
successfully disrupted the Republican bombing efforts.
Comment: I think this works fine and have no further changes to
suggest. I'm signing this one off.

Scenario: O18 Less Trucks, More Balls
Version: 0.3
Playtesters: Scott Key, solitaire
September 14, 2019
Report: - The left facing Cr.32 sqn was assigned the experte.
- the I-16 unit was assigned the other veteran counter.
- Game went well, no extreme rolls, mostly in the average range.
- Flak scored some hits but not outside of the norms.
- Strafing was pretty effective. One target (the second trucks
unit) was undamaged.
Turns1-3: - The game started with no tallies which quickly
changed in turn 2.
- in the second turn both the SBs and the leading R-Zs were
attacked by Chirri squadrons. The I-16 Sqn followed into the
fight having tallied the Cr.32 experte sqn.
- The SBs strafed the Train but scored 0%
- In turn three the first attacking units hit the small arms
barrages and made their first strafing attacks.
- The leading R-Z sqn scores a 50% hit on the troops. The SB
scores no hits on the leftmost trucks.
- The SBs lost 4 a/c by the end of turn 3 however they had
downed two Cr.32s themselves . Both they and the Cr.32s
attacking them break.
- The I-16s and the experte Cr.32 sqns enter a dogfight.
Turns 4-6: - The dogfight moves towards the Republican board
edge for two turns then, after losing and a/c, the I-16s break.
- the remaining Italian squadron pursues an RTB R-Z sqn. away
from the surface targets.
- The strafing units get shaken up by flak and take some losses.
- Strafing occurs and the bombers climb away from the small arms
fire.
- Getting one ineffective last attack in the remaining Italian
sqn breaks in Turn 6
Victory: Draw
Republicans: +2 vp fighters downed; Strafing : Troops (Heavy) +2
vp, Train (Heavy) +5 vp, Trucks (Fatal) +12 vp= +21vp
Italians: - 1 vp fighters downed, -10 vp bombers downed = -11 vp
Total: +10 vp
Recommendations: - Really enjoyed this exciting scenario. Not
sure I’ve ever had ALL my squadrons down at altitude 0 at the
same time before.
- definitely balanced.
- Neither side made use of the clouds, though they did prevent
a first turn tally by one of the Cr.32sqns. If Iplayed it again
I might examine a way to better utilize their cover.
- Signing off on this.
