(straggler becomes loss on I16 wing leader D
Cohesion: I16 wing leader D breaks; CR32B disrupted
Bf109B G bounces I16 L
Bounce: No losses either side but the Messerschmitts break up
the I16 formation
Cohesion: I16L disrupts
I16J vs. He111S nets two losses on He111S
Cohesion: good for both
Turn Three
Grupo 21 wing leader tallies He111B U. Both will go after
bomber
CR32A drops tally on I16D wing leader

Recon mission complete
Turn Seven
Barrage flak vs Do17 no effect
Victory: Nationalists: 5 (recon complete)+ 7 fighters= 12
Republicans: 10 bombers + 6 fighters
12-16=-4 Republican victory
Recommendation: Do the 109Bs really have no radios? I thought
they were equipped with them. I played according to the
scenario restrictions, though. Flak had very little effect on
the outcome on either side. Had the bombers performed better,
it could have gone either way. In this case, though, had the
bombers dropped the bridges, it would have been barely a
Nationalist victory (by one point).
I don’t know if it would be ahistorical, but could the
restriction in special rule 3 be removed. This would allow the
bombers to change altitude and glide bomb. Of course, as I said,
this may be counter to German bombing doctrine at that time.
The 109B should definitely be moved down to altitude nine. This
allows it to protect the Do17. Another possibility is to double
the recce mission score to 10 VP instead of the restriction of
special rule 4 and leave the bombers where they are. I like
this scenario. It was a lot of fun and except for the above,
pretty well-balanced.

I checked the setup and my notes. I put a veteran in the Bf109.
That way, it is more likely than not to tally any fighter trying
to reach the Do17Z. If nothing else works, it can return to base
and dive. The result was that the Bf109 joined the fight every
time, but sometimes a bit late to the party.

It's one of the things I pointed out in my first playtest. Even
with a veteran assigned, one would have to roll a five or a six
to reach altitude 7 where the Do17 interceptions would take
place. For the sake of balance, I wonder if it is even
necessary.

Firstly, I don’t want to change the restrictions on special rule
3. This is german doctrine of the time.
Though I’m okay with dropping the altitude of the Bf 109s a
little, I’m very nervous of dropping them by a lot. The 109s
should be high. The idea is that there’s a risk they might not
get into the fight or arrive late, and as Elias notes, an RTB
followed by a dive might generate the required result.
If I drop the altitude by 1, then adding a Veteran will give the
109s a 50% chance of a tally, even before considering RTB
tactics.

Scenario: O21 Supermosca
Version: 0.6
Playtesters: Chris Bryans (Solo)
Report: This is my third playtest of this scenario. Note: In
all air combats involving the CR32, it has the edge
Summary: Republican fighters seemed to break fairly easily but
lost few – some of this occurred when they chose to chase the
bombers into the flak zone. Had I avoided this, the results may
well have hovered around a draw. Bombers scored zero again.
Moving the 109 down one level was certainly helpful. The
scenario as it stands is balanced and reflects the historical
situation. At least the results for this one seems to match the
scenario outcome. I think I am ready to sign off on this one.
Still wondering why the 109 does not have a radio. Were the
109Bs of the Legion Kondor not equipped with them or did they
simply not use them at the time?
I assume that in your last email, Lee that when you wrote of
"adding a veteran" you meant one of the veterans in the scenario
mix already (which is what I did in my last two playtests). I
assumed that since the latest version has - the same number of
veterans as 0.5.
Victory: Nationalists 5 (successful recon) + 2=7
Republicans: 4 (2 bombers)+ 6=10
7-10=-3 Republican victory

Emils
The Bf109E entered in service in Spain in December 1938
