Okay, after a little thought I’m now considering these changes
to 15.3.7, modifications of what has been discussed above:
First, remove the rule in the strafing profile saying: If a
squadron is depleted by a strafing attack it returns to base.
Second, recrafting the final paragraph slightly to say: Unlike
other bombing attacks, after strafing the squadron can strafe
again, provided its ammo is not depleted. Until it attacks again
the squadron can move freely provided it stays within 4 columns
of any enemy surface unit. If it cannot strafe again it must
continue its mission behaviour [15.2.1.1, 15.2.3].
The changes to the proposed text upthread are underlined. Does
that cover us?

I’ve seen the light. Once again I was confusing strafing
missions with strafing attacks. 15.2.1.1 and 15.2.3 make sense
to me now. Thank you for your patient explanation.
I really like the proposed verbiage addition in the post above.
It’s clear and emphasizes the difference between strafing and
sweep mission behaviors.

I think it’s true that having a strafing mission and strafing
bombing profile is the original sin. You’re not the only person
tripped up by this. At this late stage I don’t think it’s
something we can fix. Too many missions with references to
strafing missions or strafe attacks. However, we can try and
mitigate the damage as best we can.

Once you get it, a rule book change isn’t required. If you want
to avoid blokes like me in the future, maybe a clarification
statement added to the errata file is all that’s needed.
edit: you are way ahead of me :)

Lee, Al,
How about adding a sidebar warning of the strafing mission and
bombing profile potential confusion? Gamers might be less prone
to get things mixed up if they were specifically warned about
it?

I agree that this a better option if space would permit it.

I'll take a look at that idea. In the meantime can folks look at
the current version of the strafing rules, after making the
changes prompted by Al's feedback, and give me your thoughts on
them?

This might be a good topic for an example of play and/or YouTube
video.

I'm not fond of "vertical strafing" where you could use a dive
bombing profile for strafing. First because it doesn't look
right, and second because I think it could affect already
published scenarios.

I can absolutely restore the old 'no more than one altitude
dived on the turn of attack' rule. And looking at the Clark
Field scenario I think we are seeing the reasons for doing that.
It's been an interesting exercise to take the rule away and then
see what effect it has.
