As I recall, did you not lead the campaign with a raid of
heavies? I thought that an interesting choice. And one that
maybe favours the Americans, as it should be easier to preserve
bombers and escorts against the small numbers of Zeroes that
will reach the bombers' height. If that's a wrong assumption,
I'd like to know why.

their control. I know P-38 pilots when later writing advice for
rookies emphasized NEVER getting into dogfights with the
Japanese: Hit, run and climb back up to do it again. This is
certainly borne out in the game

If the P-38s can attack the zeroes in a dive, then dogfights
should be uncommon.

This was due to bad decisions on my part. I was reflexively
trying to initiate dogfights in order to keep A6M5 squadrons
away from the bombers, especially earlier in the campaign.
I did lead with a Heavy raid. The reason I am (partially)
blaming it is that I probably flew lower than I should have
which allowed too many fighter casualties and the raid itself
did no meaningful damage and thus was a waste of resources. Not
that I could have anticipated that ahead of time.

Thank you, Gordon for an enjoyable campaign. I really love this
added aspect in Wing Leader.
Lee, anything else I can do to help with this or anything else
in the pipeline?

That's not a bad idea. If you can help with any of the scenario
testing, that would be great.
We could do with another person taking a look at the Swedish
scenario.

Ok
Ill have to print out the ADCs and counters at work but should
be on it within a week or so
Have to say, I know nothing about the Swedish airforce and Im
still learning about later war luftwaffe so as to that Ill be
useless. But i will happily give it a go.

It is a small, fast playing scenario. Pay attention to the
Swedish bombsights, they can glide bomb or steep angle bomb at
fairly high altitudes with lots of positive mods. Very useful.

The campaign is deliberately set up to allow the US the option
of unescorted raids. In general it’s a Bad Idea (the Japanese
can afford to lose 10 Zeroes more readily than the US can lose 8
B-24s in Scott’s example) but it is an option in the US toolbox.
Similarly the Japanese can rely on flak and leave the fighters
on the ground if they are so inclined though again this is
likely not to be beneficial.
In repeated testing with Andrew we did see some raids where
there was a lot of fencing between the respective fighters
trying to draw the enemy into unfavourable combats but few
actual engagements or losses. I really like this (unintended)
effect as it fits with my reading of history where sometimes
large forces sortied but neither side pressed home resulting in
few casualties. It’s a phenomenon I’ve never seen gamed before
but it made sense to me in this context.
Cheers
Gordon

I don't think the campaign rules as currently constituted
specifically allow the US player the choice of not escorting.
Rather, an inability to generate sorties would lead to an
unescorted raid in the present system.
